Historical Background:
La Ferté was the last strongpoint at the west end of the Maginot line, 30 kms east of Sedan. Composed of two main bunkers connected by underground, the strongpoint had a garrison of 106 soldiers under the command of Lt Bourguignon. On the 15th of May, la Ferté opened fire on the first German units approaching. 71.Infanterie Division of Gal Weisenberger was to capture first Villy village and hill 206, defended by 23rd French Colonial Infantry Regiment, before to attack the strongpoint. The battle raged during two days and Germans suffered heavy casualties because la Ferté gave a good support of fire to the French soldiers. But in spite of a French armored counter-attack with B1-bis heavy tanks, Villy was captured by the Germans in the morning of 18th of May. After air bombing and heavy artillery fire on the bunkers, German engineers reached the top of the bunkers and destroyed the gun turrets with explosives. At that time, the French strongpoint was annihilated. For the garrison, the surrender or the evacuation were not possible because of no orders received. In fact, nobody left la Ferté. On the 2nd of June, a German patrol, visiting the strongpoint, discovered the bodies of the whole garrison, dead by suffocation, down in the underground. They didn't surrender !
