Historical Background:
Corregidor was called the Gibraltar of the East. The 13,000 U.S. and Filipino troops under General Wainwright were under siege by the 75,000 Japanese taking the island under General Homma. This was the last island to be taken in Manila Bay. Fort Mills, as it was called, was defended by mounted naval gun batteries around the perimeter of the island. The island was bombarded by the Japanese for about four months before the landing, which damaged or destroyed many of the guns, and killed many defenders. The island was taken back when General Douglas McArthur returned in 1945.
