Historical Background:
A Marine patrol unit came across a Japanese squad laying communications wire on Aug 20 1942. The 60 man Marine unit killed all but five of the 38 Japanese unit. The Five survivors went back to their headquarters and reported what happened. Meanwhile Major General Alexander Vanderfrift set up an ambush on the west side of a sandbar on the Ilu River, called Alligator Creek. The Marines set up heavy maching guns, mortars, and 75mm artillery guns, all aimed at the sandbar. Just after midnight on August 21st, Col Kiyonau Ichiki sent his main body of 900 troops to cross the creek. The Japanese did not expect the American defenders so far from Henderson Field. The first wave of one hundred Japanese soldiers charged across the sandbar toward the Marine positions. Machine gun fire and mortar rounds killed most of the attackers, although a few survived to engage hand to hand with the closest Marine positions. At 02:30 a second wave of 150 to 200 Japanese troops again attacked across the sandbar, and again were wiped out. Ichiki's troops regrouped and began to fire mortars into the American lines. The Marines answered back with mortars and 75mm artillery barrages into the East bank of the creek. The third wave of Japanese troops waded across the creek in an attempt to outflank the Marine positions on the West bank. Again the Marines answered with mortars and 75mm artillery fire causing the Japanese to abandon their attack. For the next couple of hours, the two sides exchanged rifle, machine gun, and artillery fire at close range across the creek. The Marines finally outflanked the Japanese from Henderson field and aircraft flew strafing runs in the afternoon until the Japanese were defeated.
