Historical Background:
Germany initiated the Invasion of Yugoslavia on April 6th, 1941, as per Fuhrer Directive no. 25. A total of 49 divisions (30 German, 14 Italian and 5 Hungarian) entered the country from Italy, Germany (Austria), Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. In addition for the land operations, Operation Punishment was also launched, an air raid on Belgrade. The air raid successfully cut off communication lines, Yugoslav divisions got no orders. Croats refused to fight the Axis, instead, they joined them against the Serbs. Serbs were outflanked from Roumania and Bulgaria. However, neither Romanians nor Bulgarians participated the invasion. The situation was desperate; it was clear, that they couldn't make a stand against the Axis.

Hungary was also in a pretty complicated situation. It didn't wanted to join the Axis (although, they were the only 'sponsors' of reclaiming Hungarian-populated territories), but at the same time it wanted to take back these territories. The invasion already had been started for a week, and Hungary feared, that it couldn't retake such a territory in Yugoslavia. So the 3rd Hungarian Army began the "Delvidek Hadmuvelet" with the objective of Ujvidek (Novi Sad) and the Danube river line. The operation was a success, the Serbs didn't put up strong resistance (also, the territory had a relative ethnic Hungarian majority). Hungary had to pay a price for Bacska: 719 military personnel were badly wounded or KIA. Prime Minister Pal Teleki committed suicide, because he knew, that with this act against Yugoslavia, they had definitely joined the Axis. The United Kingdom cut off diplomatic relations with Hungary, and declared war against it only 6 months after, in respect for Teleki's sacrifice.

Hungary entered a war, which it didn't wanted to join. Although the majority of ethnic Hungarians now lived in Hungary, the new borders were not recognized by the Western Powers.
