Historical Background:
In the morning of the 20th of June 1940, German assault troops of 1.Kavallerie Division landed on the south bank of the Loire river between Saumur and Dampierre. At Petit Puy, the few cavalry cadets were overcome by numbers and nobody could stop the crossing of the river by enemy troops. Some cadets, under the command of captain de Saint Blanquat, were surrounded in Aunis farm and fought fiercely. A french counter-attack was launched to relieve them : a platoon of H-39 light tanks and a battalion of cadets from the Saint Maixent infantry school, headed by captain Bleuze, advanced from Chaintré to Aunis farm and hill 90. Cavalry cadets in Aunis farm were relieved but the attack to hill 90 was stopped by the heavy German artillery barrage which inflicted heavy casualties to the french troops. This was the last episode in the heroic resistance of the cadets of Saumur.
