Historical Background:
Three previous attempts to dislodge the German defenders from the abbey had failed. This attempt was made with a multinational force consisting of British, New Zealanders, Polish, American, and free French forces. A 2000 gun artillery barrage preceded the attack by the American 88th division and 5th army, the Polish 2nd division, the British 13th Corps and various Gurkha, New Zealand, and Canadian groups. The British engineers struggled to build a pontoon bridge across the Rapido River, and after taking 83 casualties out of 200. By the 11th, the Allies had 108 battalions facing 57 German battalions, and many of them were only at half strength. The British took the town of Cassino, and the Monte itself fell to the Polish after suffering 3500 casualties. The German defenders left on the 17th.
