Historical Background:
In October 1944, 3rd DIA launched an offensive on the watershed of the Vosges mountains in order to breakthrough the "Winterlinie" (German winter defensive line). 6th RTM, attached to the DIA in this occasion, was in charge to take the spur called "Haut du Faing". On the 16th of October, Moroccan soldiers advanced on steep hills and fought against German positions on La Charme hamlet. At the end of the day, the Haut du Faing was entirely captured. The first German counter-attacks made by two disciplinary Battalions arrived since the 17th of October and lasted several days. During six days, Moroccan soldiers resisted of the German assaults as well as the continuous enemy artillery fire. In spite of heavy losses of the regiment, the Haut du Faing was never recaptured by the enemy. The resistance of Moroccan soldiers in Haut du Faing was qualified by historians as "Cassino of the Vosges".
