Early in March 1944 the Japanese 15th Army launched Operation U-GO, to capture an important British base located in the highland town of Imphal. As part of the assault, Lt. General Yanagida's 33rd Infantry Division attacked north along the Tiddim road. By mid April the offensive and ground to a halt, and over the next few weeks a war of attrition would ensue against the 17th Indian division over control of several villages along the road. One of these villages was Ningthoukhong. During the fighting the village changed hands twice with the Japanese able to cross the swollen stream and split Ningthoukhong into two, and secure a foothold. However, Gurkha reinforcements carrying PIAT's were able to counter attack and smash Japanese Armour, then drive the Japanese out of Ningthoukhong for good.
