On September 14th 1942 the Germans first attempt to take Stalingrad was under way. After the Germans seized Mamayev Kurgan heights they turned their attention toward the no. 1 Railroad station. Nearby the station there was the NKVD HQ and the Grain Silo. Behind the station there were land spots where where reinforcements would be landed from the other side of the Volga. The men tasked with defending this were men from the 62nd army. After the opening day of the battle with his army split in two General Vasily Chuikov sent a plea of help to the 13th Guards Division commanded by Major-General Rodmitstev. The 13th division had to fight its way all the way from the landing spot to the rail road station. The fighting around the station was extremely bloody, it changed hand 15 times before the German 71st division finally secured it on September 19th 1942. The Soviet 13th Guards Division started out with 10,000 men but after the battle was over they only could manage to bring up 2,700 men in fighting form.
