The Germans had set up a solid blocking point just outside of the town of Valguarnera to prevent the Canadians inland advance along highway 117.
The Canadian commander, Guy Simonds put into action his plan. He meant to hold down the main defending force while sending out a flanking attack cross country to take the town by surprise. Brig. Penhale's brigade carried out the main attack.
Brig. Graham's brigade carried out the flanking action and found their way with little navigational aids through gullies and ridges to find themselves on the town. Here they hastily set up a road block to prevent the movement of German troops to reinforce the line.
The German commander was soon aware of the enemy now behind his line and was forced to deal with that situation. Troops that were meant to support the main defense were now setting up a defense of their own. Soon, it was realized that the situation was lost. The Germans pulled back in the middle of the night and the patrols of the 48th Highlanders found the town abandon.
