Historical Background:
After the joining of Gabon to the free France, colonel Leclerc was appointed military commander of Chad and received his orders from De Gaulle: take Kufra. To the South is the Libya, this oasis was under Italian control. The Italians have a force of 300 officers and native troops in garrison in the fort of El Tag and a mobile company, the "Compania sahariana di Cufra". The Italians, better equipped, have reconnaissance and light bomber aircraft. Leclerc have 350 men (including 100 Europeans and 120 méharistes). These troops had the advantage of understanding desert, but had equipment that was unsatisfactory...
The column Leclerc sprang on 24 January 1941 and entered in Libya. Things turned poorly: a British detachment of the LRDG (Long Range Desert Group), which preceded the French, was decimated during an ambush by the Saharianna. This annulled the effect of surprise and persuaded the British that he had to stop there, but Leclerc decided to continue alone. With 20 trucks, he reached Kufra February 7 at night. He organized a night on the airfield attack and his troops destroyed hangars and aircraft.
On 18 and 19 February, Leclerc bypassed the fort from the East with two light platoons for the Sahariana. Top falling North of the Fort, he forced her to flee, and this despite the intervention of Italian aircraft. He besieged the fort the 19. Free French had only a mortar 81 mm and a canon 75 mm towed and limited to 20 rounds per day. More the moving continuously to make fire in the right place and to avoid being spotted.
On 1 March 1941, Leclerc presented in person to the gate of the fort and obtained the surrender of the Italian garrison.
March 2, while the French flag rises for the first time on Kufra, Leclerc made an oath to his men to "continue the fight until the French flag again in Strasbourg". This regiment was the beginning of what became, in March 1943, the 2nd famous DB.
