Historical Background: On February 27th, 1942 The battle of the Java sea was fought. This battle was a key victory in Japans conquest of Java. It enabled the Japanese to land troops unhindered on Java. Early in the morning of February 28th, The Japanese landed off of Batavia, a large coastal town on in the northwest coast of Java. The attack was a three pronged assault with the center prong taking Batavia and the two others protecting the flanks. The battle was over in just a few hours with the unprepared Dutch forces being routed by a much superior Japanese Army. After this battle the Japanese troops Marched inland and met up with the troops who had landed on the east side of the island The Dutch administration surrendered unconditionally on March 8th, 1942
