Historical Background:
Between August 17th and 19th Allied forces from Poland, Canada, Great Britain and the U.S. began a pincer move to destroy the German 7th Army. Conditions within the pocket were impossible to imagine. The roads were blocked by shot-up and burned out vehicles, ambulances with their wounded carbonized, panzers ablaze, and horses on their backs with their legs up in their death throes. Chaos extended far and wide. Artillery and armor piercing rounds came from either side. The Germans roamed around as if in a slaughterhouse. Finally a counterattack by the 2nd SS Panzer Corps opened up an escape route where many German troops slipped through. On August 21st, the 10th Polish armored division cut off around Mont Ormel, was resupplied by Canadian troops, and the gap was sealed.
