Historical Background:
While the 6th German Army was embroiled in hard fighting for the city of Stalingrad, the Soviet High Command Stavka was building up strong armies to the west and south of the city. During to summer offensive the Axis had failed to clear all Soviet Forces on the west side of the great rivers Don and Volga and the Red Army now used the Bridgeheads to build up their forces. The Soviets employed Maskirovka to disguise their intentions and while the German Commander Paulus had most of his German forces of the 6th Army tied up in capturing Stalingrad his flanks were protected by the poorly equipped allied Romanian, Hungarian and Italian Armies.

When the attack came the Red Army attacked with overwhelming force aiming for a quick encirclement of the city. The poorly equipped Romanian Armies fought bravely but could not face the onslaught of the Red Army and the flanks of the Axis forces were routed. Hitler intervened and forbade any retreat from Stalingrad and was assured by the confident Commander of the Luftwaffe Herman Göring that the German forces trapped inside Stalingrad could be supplied form the air.

This resulted in the first major defeat of Wehrmacht in World War 2 and marked the beginning of the end of the Nazi Empire. When the battle was over the entire German 6th Army had been destroyed along with the majority of the allied axis forces.

The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.
