Contexte historique :
The leading troops of the British 2nd Div. relieved 161 Brigade at Jotsoma on April 15, and 161 Brigade in turn broke through to Kohima on April 18. By now, Kohima resembled a battlefield from the first World War, with trees smashed and the ground covered in craters - see Scenario from the Front [Burma] Kohima - the Siege. Miyazaki continued to try to capture Garrison Hill, and there was heavy fighting for this position for several more nights, with heavy casualties on both sides. Meanwhile, the other two brigades of 2nd Division tried to outflank both ends of the Japanese position. The Japanese had reorganised their forces for defence. Progress was slow: the Japanese were very deeply dug in, their positions well-concealed and mutually supporting. However, the various positions were slowly taken. The last was the DC's bungalow. On May 13, the British finally bulldozed a track to the position up which a tank could be dragged. A Lee tank crashed down onto the tennis court and destroyed the Japanese trenches and bunkers, thus finally clearing Kohima Ridge. The terrain had been reduced to a fly and rat-infested wilderness, with half-buried human remains everywhere. The conditions under which the Japanese troops had lived and fought were described by several British sources as "unspeakable". Yet the Japanese continued to defend tenaciously.

In the end, the decisive factor was the Japanese lack of supplies. Since the offensive started, they had had to make do with meagre captured stocks and what they could forage in increasingly hostile local villages. This was partly due to the British Chindits (23rd Long Range Penetration Brigade), which had been operating behind the Japanese 31st Division. They had cut the Japanese supply lines and prevented them foraging in the Naga Hills to the east of Kohima. By the middle of May, Sato's troops were starving. Finally on May 31, he abandoned Naga and other positions in spite of orders from Mutaguchi to hang on. Many of the 31st Division were too enfeebled to drag themselves further south than Ukhrul, where hospitals had been set up, but with no medicines, medical staff or food.

The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.

Briefing :
Axis Player: Take 4 Command cards

Allied Player: Take 6 Command cards.
You move first.

Conditions de victoire :
6 medals.

An Allied unit that captures the indicated Kohima town hex, or a Japanese unit that captures the indicated hill hex or Jotsoma, counts as one Victory Medal for their side. Place Objective Medals on these hexes. As long as the unit remains on the hex, it continues to count toward victory. If the unit moves off or is eliminated, it no longer counts.

Règles spéciales :
The Allied Special Force infantry units are elite Chindit and Ghurka units. Place a Chindit or Ghurka badge in the same hex as these units to distinguish them from the other units. The Chindit and Ghurka units may move 1 or 2 hexes and still battle.

The supply situation for the Japanese is very poor. Subtract 1 order from each command card played by the Japanese player - i.e. if an Attack card is played, normally allowing 3 units to be ordered, only 2 unit may be ordered. For cards that allow units to be ordered across different battlefield sections (e.g. Recon in Force), the Japanese player may decide which section the subtracted order comes from. For cards that order all units in a section, the Japanese player may order 3 units. If the Japanese capture Jotsoma this restriction is lifted, and the Japanese immediately receive an extra command card for the rest of the game, even if they subsequently lose Jotsoma, bringing their hand of command cards to 5. This rule is in addition to normal Supply Depot special rules.

The Japanese Special Forces units are sniper units (see P.5, EF).

Imperial Japanese Army Command rules are in effect (see P.7, PT).

Jungles are explained on P.5, PT.

Supply depots are explained on P.11, TP.

Note that 1 British unit and 4 Japanese units begin the game with sandbags.

You need the Pacific Theatre, Terrain Pack, and Eastern Front (sniper rules) expansions to play this scenario.
