Infantry: rifleman with bayonet- the good old Lee Enfield .303 naturally enough.
|
Sure, do not forget the tin hat.
JMcL63 wrote on Tue, 08 May 2007 21:01 | Tanks: Churchill or Cromwell- sure they're late war and not early war, but I just think that either of these were more important than any of the early war models (or even all of them put together?).
|
Not the Cromwell, I think they where few, and only one brigade was equiped with them.
Churchill, Matilda or Cruzader for tank.
25pd for artillery
Hurricane or Tempest for the air pac rules (ground support)

Perrin makes a good Grant (or Lee as it were depending...an M3 in any case)
I would think that would be the best choice for what they have available.

fwiw, we only used Perrin minis as models for the base game tanks and artillery, not for any of the other armies (Russian, Japanese, ...)
So I'm afraid looking at their models won't give much hint of what the British tanks will be

If you listen to Eric's recent interview on BGG you will hear that the British expansion is scheduled for release sometime in the first half of next year. The focus is the desert war. There will be British troops, but he doesn't say which tank. There will also be a British special ability that Richard Borg calls the 'Stiff Upper Lip'...

An official British special ability? Well that's good news! And 'Stiff Upper Lip' is an apt title. I wonder what it'll be? It sounds a bit like something to do with morale, which suggests a flag rule naturally enough. I'm looking forward to finding out the details.

then it is only fair that the Germans receive a "Führer und Vaterland" ability as well!

Italians would be easy to implement - just use current Axis figures and give them the "Goblin Panic" ability from Battlelore...

The British and their commonwealth compatriots were the only nation who thought throughout the entire of WWII on the allied side.
The french and polish were knocked out very quickly.
The Russians joined in late (though made the largest contribution of any allied nation in the war)
The US turned up very late
As we already have US, Russian and Japanese figures the Brits have to be the next obvious country.
Choice of tank.... From D-Day onwards the US were the dominant partner in the west. Britains greatest contributions were in the desert war and the 1940 french campaign. A matilda 2 or some form of cruiser tank would be the obvious choice for either of these. If you really wanted to do Brits in 1944 just use the american shermans!
It would be really nice to see a 25pdr for the artillery. Actually the existing artillery pieces are a bit misleading, they look like 37mm anti tank guns and are supposed to represent field artillery??
If a Brit expansion is bought out i shall of course buy it immediately regardless of which tank is used.

Good discussion... Just wanted to chime in with my two cents. I just checked out this forum and was glad to see this topic is already being addressed. (And has been for a while.) To me this is absolutely Job #1 for DOW. It's just not right using G.I.s for Brit-based scenarios. I would even be happy with an expansion that only had figures!
DOW please get on this ASAP!

I'd pick up a British expansion pack for the following:
- France 1940
- Norway 1940
- Seelowe 1940 (planned German invasion of England)
- The Desert 1940-42
- Commando Raids 1941-44
- South East Asia/Burma (1941-44)
- and of course Papua New Guinea 1942-43.
I'd love to see 25 Pounders and Crusader Tanks

Kind of makes it interesting. Course that is assuming that the Italians have a weaker fighting ability or something since that is how they are usually portraited in games.

Already have my Italians (purchased from a dollar store). Although they are not really Italian Inf, they do pass quite well. I use the Japanese armor for the Italian tanks, which works if one is not too picky.

Whilst i still tend to think that the US turned up rather "late". I personally think that the speed with which the US in particular recovered from their losses in the pacific was extraordinary.
Within 6 months of pearl harbour the battle of coral sea and midway had been fought and guadalcanal was just getting going. A remarkable achievment. (Just in case you suspected i was trying to be "anti US") The facts are the US did not join in until somewhat later than everyone else and did not want to join in then. If pearl harbour had not happened i doubt the US would have entered the war, in which case i am doubtful we could have won, so thanks to Japan for causing your side to lose the war!
OK I admit that is a slight simplification
Andy
PS I would be happy with Crusader, Churchill or Matilda as the Brit tank. Got to be a 25pdr though hasn't it

No worries about the "anti- US" part. I did not think that. But as an American I think that a lot of us in the US tend to be too sensitive about some of the criticisms directed at us. We do have a number of national issues.
As to the US entering the war, do not forget that the US had gone in the Isolationism direction (leave Europe [and it's wars] to the Europeans). This was a direct result of the slaughter of WW I. Even though the US only suffered a small portion of that horror, it was etched in their minds. Their were those (both in the US Gov and private sector) who wished to pitch in, but probably only a direct attack (at that time) would prompt the US to enter.
Who knows what would have happened later?

Interestingly the good old british empire used to have the same view. We ruled the seas and much of the foreign lands and left the europeans to fight amongst themselves.
I personally suspect we made a major mistake joining in WW1. If we had stayed out it would probably have been a minor French defeat, no big deal no worse than the 1870's war which we stayed out of. WW1 bankrupt the UK, although we did not do all the fighting we did finance the entire war.
I have met many Americans some with quite interestingly distorted views on a number of historical things, and some very knowledgable ones very indignant at how much US history is distorted (I think the later are in the minority). Everyone is entitled to their own views and prejudices, whatever makes people happy.
I always find it funny how many people think the US civil war was fought over slavery, hardly anyone remembers that Lincoln did not free the Yankee slaves (in 1863?), he only freed confederate slaves. (very generous of him i thought!)

Somebody call Harry Turtledove... we have another "What if" book for him to write...
Arms race pushes tech base. If the Brits had stayed out of WW1 and thus the US had stayed out... Wow... wonder what Tech level we would be at now??? would we have the internet???
The Russian revolution would have still happened. So what if in 1942 the Russians had started flexxing their military might???
We might not of had Hitler, but Stalin was still well on his way???
Be kinda strange for Germany coming to Polands aid...
but then Poland would not have been that big... wow thats a big what if...
