Disapointed with new merlin's company Tue, 26 August 2008 23:33
I remember when i saw the headlines "new merlin's expansion has hit stores! get it now!" Crying or Very Sad I decided to look more into it on other sites and became increasingly frustrated with 2 aspects. First, that is totally cheap of days of wonder to use same photos on coat of arms, i would have preferred if they wouldn't have even made them if they don't want to take the time to make new pictures. 2nd, i learned that the box makes the price go way up and so we have to pay 25$ for a quarter of the supplies the original game. I liked the new cards and all but not the cheap money grubbing technique and the lack of imagination and effort in new characters. Anyone else agree?

I think the same picture was there so people could more easily identify with the original sculpts - especaily if they painted over the colored rock they all stand on.

It also reinforces that you can play with any knights you want but you can't have two of the same color in play.

then they shouldn't have made them at all. If they can't make little icons or figures for new cards then why jip people out of some originality.

I think that they created the rule since they had chosen to "recycle" the old minis and artwork (rather than opting for "recycling" since each couple of knights was shown as "incompatible" during playtest. There's no real reason those knights cannot play together... apart the lack of proper minis in the expansion Wink ).

I assumed this as well. But my point was to reuse they choose to reuse the art so the minis would still match.

I understood this fully, but personally I feel cheated out of some good possibilities that they could have achieved with more knights, I just feel like the knights were a shortcut to more money for them. And that doesn't explain the reason for making the box larger so people have to pay more. Frown

I haven't unwrapped my expansion box yet, so maybe I can't really comment, but I was pretty disappointed when I learned there weren't any new knights per se, just new names and abilities. I think it's most frustrating that you can't have specific knights in the same game simply because they share a color (althought with the painted set I may be able to get around this). However, the expansion is not that expensive anyway, and I'm not sure how much of a difference a smaller box or different sculpts would have made price-wise.

With making the box larger it requires the price to go up because they still do have to pay for some of the shipping.

I think it's the other way around. Judging by the fact when Bedivere was introduced people believed it meant the game could be played with 8 players, despite what the developers said. Introducing 8 new coats of arms and minis would have given many persons the false impression the game could be played with more than 8 players.

that is a good point, but still, many people complained about getting the box, and finding 2/3 of the space not used. Why do they not put the stuff in a smaller box if it is simply that easy?

The only other reason I can think of to make the box that size is to be consistent with the original box. Same size, just not as tall. The same thing happened with The Pillars Of The Earth Exapansion. The box is the same size as the base game box, just not as tall, but only 2/3, if that, of the space inside is needed for the components.

hmm.... strange but ok I guess.... although it does make the price go up I have read from many board game sites.... I don't really know what to make of that. But thanks anyway.

the box being the same size is NICE, in that, for a single expansion, I can just put the expansion lid under the main box, put the expansion box bottom on top of the main box bottom, and put the main box lid over the both of them. I did this with TTR:E/TTR:S.

As for the contents... I'd have liked another 8 figures... but then people would try to play 16player.

And I would not have liked the extra $15-$20 that I'd have been having to pay for it. I've not gotten it into play yet, but I do have it. Travel deck feels WAY too light.

I rarely read this forum, so I didn't see this right when it was posted, but I had to say something now.

I remember reading something somewhere that said (and I'm paraphrasing):

"Its a no win situation for the company. If they make small boxes, the customers complain they don't fit nicely with the others in the series. If they make uniform size boxes, the customers complain they're being sold air"

Funny quote I remember, perfect for this situation...

I fully understand, I foolishly did not look at all sides of the equation, although I believe that (whether true or not) it feeds into the mind set that once companies get a taste of money, they'll do anything to get more. While I hope this to not be true of Days of Wonder, I believe they should relise that those who would whine about their inability to make everything seem perfect and similar, while it's perfectly understandable, should not be truly bothered by this if they like the game enough. They should be happy the price is understandable and end their argument there.
