Hello everybody,

as time goes by, the number of gof-players is getting less all the time, some old players will never return, some change their alias. Certainly, this is often due to the bad atmosphere between players, or whatever particular reason there may be. Everyone plays in his own small world, with his own list of buddies or with his own red list.

I am offering to you a team-tournament with special rules in order to get a maximum of old and new players together and also to have fun and to improve the atmosphere in gof. I ;m sure, that you would appreciate this good atmosphere. However, I know, that it wont be easy and I also know, that there will always be players, who wont change themselves. I am still having a slight hope, it might work. If not, I am asking you to avoid any rudeness and pardon them for their behaviour, forget your quarrels with the other players and clear the way for the good atmosphere and peace.
Some of you ignore these players, because of them playing 2nd place or for their misconduct (and errors). If each one of us really tries, it could be achieved. On the other hand, when we all say, I dont care, it will never improve, as a matter of fact, we will risk never ever achieving it.
I hope, we will have the firm determination to get this good atmosphere and peace. I will take the 1st step in posting this message in the forum. May peace and a good atmosphere reign on gof!!

The tournament
First of all, I will suggest the special rules, that will give spice to single games and also to the tournament, reducing the risk of unfair dealing or getting a bad atmosphere. It is based on 16 players (should there be more, we could play with 32 players). We will have 4 teams of each 4 players.
Ranking: the player, finishing 1st , earns 3 points for his team, the 2nd 1 point, the 3rd earns nothing, so 0 points, in return the player, finishing 4th , will see his team loosing 3 points (-3).
Rule nr. 1: The members of the same team will not be able to play in the same game, for the simple and good reason, it should be avoided, that anyone tries to help his own team member in any possible way, so every team member will be having 3 opponents, who will each be in different teams.
Rule nr. 2: If a player gets caught, playing for 2nd place, he will be automatically sanctioned by being placed on finishing 4th and so, will see his team loosing 3 points. Then the one, who would have been 2nd, will be taking the place of the player, playing for 2nd place, and will be recompensated with 1 point. If a player gets caught, playing for 3rd place, he will be taking the 4th place and the player, finishing 4th , will be taking the 3rd place.

I count on you, that this rule doesnt need to be applied, it could be ruining the tournament. So please do not play for 2nd or for 3rd place (everyone is there to have a good time, so be decent and the atmosphere cant be anything but better).

Everyone of us will be playing 8 games (in 2 days, fridays 4, saturdays 4), all in all 32 games will be played to declare the winning team, that will have obtained most points. The winning team will be known as the team, unbeaten in gof.
Apart from that, I will record the finishing places of every single player, so finally the best player in the tournament can be dtermined.

So please select your team members and registrate the name of your team in the same way, you already did in earlier tournaments.
As soon as we will have close to 16 players, date and time of the tournament will be decided according to your availibility.
If you have any further suggestions, do not hesitate.

With kind regards,
~maf

PS: I would love to see teams like (thadd, solinsf, diemaus, jarmila), (lolo, urukai, boo, koko), (karina, babous, migg, phx dragon), (mac kan, lolotte, juuco,)...etc
For those, who love the competition, GO !!

Sounds like a good plan!!!
Not sure I could join since my employment sometimes requires my attention on Fridays and Saturdays.
As for the atmosphere...the little child in each one of us will sometimes spring forth and display bad manners, but it is part of life.
In addition, some people are snobs and will always be so, there choice not to play with certain individuals is theirs alone. We live in a free society Smile.
Good idea!

Maf: I will not be playing in the tournament because I don't have time. But, even if I did, there is no way in the world that I would agree to play under these ground rules.

I agree with the general concept that people shouldn't play for 2nd. But I strongly object to the idea that someone else, who has absolutely no ability to read my mind, gets to decide whether or not I was playing for 2nd -- and that I will be punished if they decide that I was. If I am 20 points behind the leader and I put someone else at 95 points, and end up losing, will the committee decree that I have played for 2nd? What about if I'm 20 points behind the leader and I put someone at 99? I have games all the time where something like this happens and I get accused of playing for 2nd even though I was pursuing what I believed to be the best possible strategy for finishing 1st. Gang of Four is a game of judgment calls & I am not going to play under terms where I can be punished because someone else, who disagreed with my strategy, gets to pronounce judgment about what my intentions were.

Also, it makes no sense that you plan to punish people who play for 2nd, while adopting a scoring system which rewards people for 2nd place. If you don't want players to play for 2nd, the best way to prevent them from doing so is to have a winner-take-all scoring system. That would completely eliminate the incentive to play for 2nd.

This is exactly the sort of attitude that made me stop playing Gang of Four online. In my last game, I was accused of playing for second when I didn't understand the 'rules' of play.

I really enjoy playing Gang of Four and think that I was actually pretty good at it at one point in time. (I'm probably pretty rusty right now.) However, I'm not very good at counting cards, so I wasn't sure of which cards were left and how I should play at the end of the game. Instead of teaching me, I was accused of playing for second and made to feel pretty rotten. As if I had thrown the game or something...

I'd much rather play other games online where the community is more friendly and it's about having fun.

Rant over...

Registrations are closes !

I wanted see what players think about this rule and many of them disagree. It s easy to see if a player has played for the second place, i know what is strategy and play for 2nd place solinsf. I respect players choise, so i removed the rule number 2.

Maf: If someone ends the game & he is in 2nd place, then it's pretty clear that he played for 2nd (either that, or he miscounted). If someone puts an opponent at 99 when he's in 2nd place, but 60 pts behind the leader, then I think most people would agree that it's either a play for 2nd or some incredibly stupid tactics. But there are also lots of grey areas.

Many people are quick to accuse an opponent of playing for 2nd if the opponent is in 2nd place & puts someone into the 90s. But the players who make these accusations often seem to forget that helping your opponent dump cards is only one part of "playing for 1st." The other part is actually trying to win the game -- which usually requires you to get control & win a round. If you don't get control & win a round, you might as well be playing for 2nd or 3rd because that's probably where you're going to wind up.

Very often, a situation will come up where I'm 15 or 20 pts out of 1st and I've got a chance to win the hand and get control. But, if I do so, it would mean putting an opponent near 100. Do I take the hand & get control, or do I sacrifice the chance to win the hand so that the other guy can dump cards? Since it's very difficult to win the game when someone else has control, I would probably choose to win the round, put the other guy at 97 or 98, & hope that I get a big hand within the next round or two. If I do that, maybe I have around a 30 or 40 percent chance of getting the big hand & winning the game. Those aren't great odds but, in my opinion, they're better than my odds of winning if I let the guy dump his cards, but give up the hand to someone else. Unfortunately, if I win the round & put someone in the high 90s, someone invariably accuses me of playing for 2nd. Ironically enough, they keep on saying it even when the strategy works & I end up 1st.

So that was the point of my first post. If you have a rule which says that no one is allowed to play for 2nd, it follows that someone has to be the judge of whether another player has played for 2nd. How do you judge something like that, when different players would make different tactical choices about what is the best strategy for winning a game?
