Game influences... Wed, 18 May 2005 07:23
Does anyone know which game or games Memoir '44 was influenced by other than Battle Cry?
I just acquired a game called Sirocco by TSR that came out in 1985. I cannot believe the similarity between the two games.
Sirocco is based on battles in the North African desert between Patton and Rommel.
It uses a card based action system.
Five different units: Jeeps, Anti-Tank guns, Tanks, Infantry, Generals.
It has a basic game and Advanced Rules w/ 5 scenarios.
Also is run on a Victory Point system.
It's either a huge influence or a huge coincidence.
Thanks,
Seth

In the games industry, such coincidences are more frequent than you may think, as explained in Tom Jolly's excellent article here http://www.thegamesjournal.com/articles/StolenGame.shtm

Actually I just got it to work.
Thanks,
Seth

For those of you who want another style of Memoir '44 definitely get a copy of Sirocco.

I would do my research before I purchase/acquire the game. The production values are not even close to that of Battle Cry and M'44. Although it is a neat game, I traded mine away when I realized it would not see any table time (due to M'44 and Battle Cry being similar but much better).

I'm not saying it's a better game. M'44 is definitely nicer. Sirocco can be found for fairly cheap on eBay. I'm updating my copy with pieces from spare A&A parts and currently looking for some Jeep minis and a mini half tracks.
As far as setup time goes, this game actually sets up a lot faster than M'44.
I do like the different terrain hexes and double-sided board for M'44 however.
Again, just a nice alternative for those who already have M'44 and want another game with the same feel to it.

WH

Go to Table Tactics for both Jeeps and 1/2 Tracks. I replaced their crappy units with A&A units and it made the game more appealing.

Game On!

I went poking around after reading this thread and found a few copies of Sirocco for sale on BoardGameGeek.com, for those who may be interested. The postings are kind of old, so I can't say they are still valid, but it is a start. There are 4 screenshots of the game box and the playing board, but they don't show the playing pieces well at all.

Anyway, just thought I'd share! I am considering getting a copy just because I like this kind of game so much. I already own BattleCry! and M44, so might as well get Sirocco. My interests lie more in WW2 anyway...

I could take some pictures of the old pieces to show, I did post a card manifest on boardgamegeek. The main difference between the cards for Sirocco and M'44 is Sirocco does not have different flanks and Sirocco cards dictate which type of unit moves, jeep, infantry, tank.

There are a couple of websites out there to get replacement pieces for various boardgames, some of them very much like A&A pieces. For those interested:

http://www.xenogames.com/

http://www.tabletactics.com/

http://66.125.84.108/elbowmas.htm

Of course, there are many manufacturers of military miniatures, these are but a very few that I know of.

I would like to see the pics of the Sirocco pieces, just to get the flavor. If you don't mind, that is. Smile

Ok, I found a copy of Sirocco on E-bay and picked it up at a very reasonable price, $9.97 shipped to my door. I also got a response from one of the sellers on BoardGameGeek.com, and they are still willing to sell the copy they have. It is the first listing and the cheapest of the three, but if you are in the U.S. it will cost quite a bit to have it shipped, as I believe the guy is in Singapore.

I look forward to this variation on the "Command and Colors" game engine, as well as the chance to play some cool desert scenarios. Thanks for pointing this one out, WitheredHand!
