Thumb up means you outperform the average score.
For example, in a 7 medal map, the average medal for an allies side is 4.8, means that most of time people can get between 4 and 5 medals even if losing the game, so if you can get 5 or 6 medals in that game, you still get thumb up.

But does a loss with an "outperform" rating mean anything in terms of your rating or promotion status?

Someone always gets thumbs up over your dead body !
|
I always hate getting those Orange thumbs down as well! Although it doesn't affect promotions or achievements, I believe it does factor in for the skill points you earn...so it affects your ranking.

There should be a "two thumbs up" : you win, and your opponent does less than the average !
Because when I read my results now, I don't know if, when I am the winner, I won and made my opponent underperform...

I'm not sure it would be very 'sporting' to rub this in...I don't expect that the losing player wants to be reminded of a devastating loss!

Sometimes the dice and cards (shear LUCK) has more to do with it than your own personal SKILL. So let credit fall where it should.

Exactly. It is very difficult (or impossible sometimes) to measure up to the avg medals gained in a given scenario when the dice and / or cards run heavily against you. Skill difference between opponents only goes so far in such situations. But I am glad that the system informs me when I underperform

Outperform does have an effect on rating points:

The original thread is here

What matters is:
The rating of both players going in
The balance of the scenario
Outperform or not
Note that in some scenarios, usually unbalanced low medal ones, the average is above a losing medal count, so it is impossible to outperform as the favoured side if you lost
For example, Omaha is a 6 medal scenario where the Axis average 5.6 medals.
In other words you cannot outperform as a loser
If you care about ranking players tend to play evenly matched scenarios with large medal counts against good opponents.
They are long enough that skill counts, and they have high medal counts so it is relatively easy to outperform

However, really, if you are any good, you should be able to play lower ranked players and still win both ways and go up in rating.
For example:
Since I was recording rating I have played Juno against Cadets and Lieutenants, I have a 16/5 win/loss ratio.
I have gained 66 skill points for doing so.
