If it's November and it's raining it must be Belgium, Passchendale weather, and the Military Museum in Brussels is merely in Brussels, not in the part of Brussels it's listed on the map, so I miss that.
Anyway, enough of that
Last year's theme was the 18 days campaign in 1940
Where the recurring theme was being unable to kill off retreated wounded Germans because you had no artillery
This years theme:
War Movies
1st task on sign in is to guess which ones they will be; which is slightly simplified because you can assume that there will be a Pacific and a Russian one; and some options will not make good scenarios
I hope to be able to to do better than last year and get into the top half of the field this year
Day I
van Voort v Hydrommel
Saving Private Ryan
Or as it became for me, not killing Tom Hanks
One heroic leader with elite infantry and a tank that's way out on the flank and will take a long time to get in the action
v
One long range artillery, 3 machine guns at the top of bluffs, one artillery in a bunkjer on the 3rd line from the base, some infantry and a bunch of wire
This is the beach assault from the movie, yes that one, not the one in reality.
It's slightly better for the allies than it sounds as both artillery bunkers and one of the mg nests are also objectives.
All figures are medals / figures suriving
(One of the many pains through being the only person on the M44 World Circuit is that everyone counts figures differently - WBC and online counts kills, Belgium counts survivors, I think the French do the same)
van Voort AX 6 / 5
Hydrommel AL 4 / 8
Tom Hanks survived having his unit shot out from him 3 times and used a barrage to take my cliff top bunker but I got the victory
Rematch:
van Voort AL 2/12
Hyrdommel AX 6/11
Attacks on the flank at the start so the tank gets to do something
Tom Hanks gets killed with his first unit, and I get driven off the one objective I manage to take
Final Result:
Hyrdommel 3 pts 10/8 19/17
Next installment tomorrow

Thank you for these reports.

Did you play this scenario on day 2?
Maybe I should call in a referee, and have the results of these games barred from the score table. That would cost Mehdi his first place

Day I Match III
The Thin Red Line
Well it was either going to be this or Sands of Iwo Jima because those are the only two Pacific options
After Omaha and Arnhem we move onto Mount Austen
Japanese units start with 2 machine guns in bunkers on a reverse slope and some camoflaged infantry. And a gun.
US are only infantry with one heroic leader
van Voort AX 2 / 10
Grim AL 5 / 27
This did not go well
I fell back in the middle ready for to attack when he crossed the open ground in front of the MGs with an centre assault I was holding
While he was setting up I was able to kill the leader with a fusilade
Unfortunatly he had an Infantry Assault and was able to take out my machine gun bunkers before I could fire back
van Voort AL 5 / 15
Grim AX 5/ 8
War of flags
I was able to infiltrate next to the artillery but lost a unit taking it out
Battle went back and forth with a lot of flags rolled but I was able to get the win with a barrage
++++++++++++++++++++
This has not been a good day
2 points from a possible 12
The Brigadier bar begins at 70th, where Albraney, Big Taz and myself all sit next to each other

An SS Commander tried to take my bridge once.
I ate his liver, with some hard tack and nice compo tea
Nom, nom, nom, nom
+++++++++++++
Intermission
The official events of the day having concluded we move onto the optional events of the evening.
Of course I come to Belgium and they feed me pasta, for which Belgium is world famous of course.
I was expecting waffle and chips with chocolate and beer, perhaps they were trying to make the one Italian guy feel at home.
After dinner they did the maths and decided that the big match would be the British (and their gallant Belgian allies) against the nevarious Franco-Dutch axis of apathy.
In time honoured tradtion I took the place on the left and looked over my shoulder towards Dunkirk
This was a super sized game approximately 15 metres long with 24 players on each side
Players were allowed to place terrain as they wish and set up forces in a 3/3/4 formation.
However the return match would be played in the reverse formation
I noted that at least one of the Dutch contigent reverted to type by building canals in front of his positions.
Units could freely move between boards
Each player had 2 minutes only to resolve their turn, if not done by then, tough.
Match was to 110 medals, after which we swopped sides and moved one space up
Sadly the British and their Belgian auxilliaries were defeated in both matches 220 : 165
I believe this sets the record for the largest M44 match yet recorded
Day II later

Ding Ding Round II
A pretty disatarous first day with only two points from a possible 12.
Placing is now utterly beyond me, , and in order to better my perfomance last year and break even or get into the top half of the table I will need to get 10 points from 12 today.
But I am good Company down the bottom, being up against Big Taz in the first match of the day:
Enemy at the Gates
Ok movie
Terrible affront to History
Well, yes I picked this one at the start too - it was either that or Cross of Iron, and while that is a much, much better film, it's also older
In this scenario we start reaching the limit of how complicated we can make these scenarios.
Soviets have depleted units in ruins in the city (which as per official rules but not online do not count for medals), reinforcments are crossing the Volga on landing craft, including Jude Law
Germans have a heavy artiller, some infantry and two machine guns. At this point I note that there have been 8 machine guns over 4 scenarios so far - well at least we are reflecting cinematic reality.
If Jude Law gets to the factory he gets replaced with a sniper but stays a hero - both sniper and hero count for medals
When he does though Ed Harris appears on the other side of the map, who is also an heroic sniper but not worth any medals
Is that clear yet?
van Voort AX 5 / 20
Big Taz AL 1 / 17
I play Finest Hour on the right and then Close Assault to clean up
Good setup for the second game
Second game gets off to a slow start with an Infantry Assault then 3 recons from me.
Lots of questions for the Refs regarding Infiltration and the Rules for Zaitsev appearing (is it "enters" or "finishes")
Question becomes moot as Jude Law retreats onto the factory
Zaitsev infiltrates to kill the heavy artiller with one shot and then retreats out of range of the infantry to plink away and kill Ed Harris
van Voort AL 5/16
Big Taz AX 3/ 5

So, it's not midday yet and I've already done twice as well as yesterday
So, to push on:
Kelly's Heroes
Have a little faith baby, it's a beautiful scenario
van Voort v Vercingetorix
So, there is a Tiger, in a city with some gold
There is also Donald Sutherland, in a Sherman with a piece of pipe, that uses the rules for Tigers
And some gold
Did I mention the Gold yet?
Any unit that leaves the city hex with one of gold pieces gets a medal, but only for as long as they have it.
Clear?
van Voort AX 6/19
Vercingetorix AL 3/10
Allies tanks on the left are killed, and two more infantry left hiding with one figure
Finally win by infiltrating to pick up some gold and pin a fullstrength infantry against the river and kill it
van Voort AL 1/13
Vercingetorix AX 6/24
TFH + AA = GG THNX
