All Around Tournament : stop ou encore ? Mon, 13 October 2014 03:27
All Around Tournament has never really gotten bigger or drawn more interest since its creation.
There's no decision taken about its future yet, it'll be fully discussed in due time. I just want to get your feedback.
By reducing the multi tournaments duration, we still have a window available in the summer while creating the Multi Asia tournament.
It'd be best to keep that window open for alternative maps

1. AAT ?
a. Keep it
b.. Offer something different

2 Something Different (you can rank ideas from best to worse):

c. AAT and 1910 Knock-out Tournaments (SPWC style). Not sure we would get more players, just recycling aat.

d. Asia League or Swiss League or AAT League or 1910 (2 games BC, 2 games 1910, 2 games Mega) League.
Any of these league is probably time consuming and same as above. We are just recycling an old format. If any, Asia has my preference though.

e.Survivor all map tournament/League.
Survivor ? You play a 5er, last is out. THen a 4er, last is out, 3er last is out.
Format : 5er Asia. Best map for a 5er.
4er : Euro works really well with 4
3er : USA
2er : best of 3. One of each map. (original version has only one game, it is too random. Best of 3 is just less random).

Pros : all formats, and 3 maps are played. Introduces another way of playing (not be last). All is wrapped up in 1 hour/1 hour 30.

We could make a tournament out of it. You set up 10/15 dates during the summer. Players can sign up to 3/4 dates. Winners go to next round. Could be top 2 if 10 dates only. Then semis and final.
Or we could even organize a League in the 2nd half of the year. If we do a League we could also integrate a 1910 format : Mega 5er /1910 4er /BC 3er.

f. I have an other idea, it is : ____________

The way I present it is obviously biased. I think that any 2-player-only format won't help the cause of alternative maps.

Survivor has been played a bit and is a great format.
A multi league with such a format would not compete much with any other tournament. And a multi format wrapped up in 90 minutes max is pretty attractive.

Thanks for your contribution

I never took part in one of the tournaments, but I am looking forward to join in AAT or some other tournament and want to give my opinion.

Asia League and/or Swiss league
I think both are great maps (especially Asia) and deserve a lot more attention. If there is the possibility to create such a tournament, maybe some more players would start playing the maps.
It would be really nice to have leagues for those maps and I would definitely favour the leagues before any of the different AAT suggestions.

I enjoyed AAT. If more people were to join I would defiantly say keep it otherwise.

I like the Idea of a Survivor all map tournament/league.

And just as Benny stated above Asia and Swiss maps are good maps and deserve a lot more attention. My favorite map is Swiss so a swiss league would be enticing for me.

I'd like to have d) if there's time. Prefer Asia if time for only one.

We could have small e)'s every now and then - it's certainly fun and you can do something that doesn't take too much time.

Number of players in League groups should probably depend on the number of equal (more or less) level players expected to sign up for this map.
For US the number seemed appropriate (no huge spread of scores between winners and losers) so I would keep it.
Asia/Swiss I'd suggest clearly smaller groups.
EU may be possible to reduce a little, not so sure here.

I think the problem with AAT is that it is too many "new" maps for people. Whether it is from not owning the maps, or not wanting to lose horribly on an unfamiliar map, I don't know.

The other problem is to venture into 1 new map is hard. You could join SMC or AMC and play 1 match and be out until next year. There needs to be a way to play more matches.

So I personally would just like to see AMC and SMC move to a swiss format with 4 or 5 rounds (rather than adding an Asia or Swiss league).

Some people like Asia multi, but from my limited experience, it just seems very random and luck based. I would rather play Mega multi!

I like the idea of survivor format as a fun thing, but not as a competition especially if the 2P board is always USA.

As for AAT, there does seem to be too many USA maps (now with Asia, Mega usually gets left off so a little better), but maybe do a modified AAT with just Europe, Asia, Swiss (2 each, each player starts once).

From what I've read in this thread, 1910 maps draw very little interest.
Same with any-KO format which Drake, I agree with, does little to promote a particular map and its gameplay.

This could be the starting point of the reflexion. Any league -AAT, Asia or Swiss- (let's say groups 8-10) can only be played during NC. I don't have any issue personally with it provided the number of matches is not overwhelming.

Here you have 3 options for the format:

1) Pure KO (not good enough to promote map)
2) League (too long to draw many players)
3) RR followed by KO (this one can be the better in-between)

I am uncertain... but I would go for a format with 4 maps Asia, Swiss, Euro, USA so to become not an AAT but really a ART (All Regions Tournament)

If that's the case, forget it (my view on that).
We really shouldn't have anything in parallel to NC.
The consequences for NC could be (just a little of everything is enough to make it a really bad idea):
- People less inclined to play NC (other interesting things available at same time, so why put effort into building a team or play with people from the same country you maybe don't like that much)
- less spectators in NC (People play their Asia/Swiss League match at same time or watch one of those)
- more scheduling issues (one offer less to my NC opp because I already have a League appointement on Saturday).

For the Asia/Swiss/xxx league it's the same problem the other way round.

I'd like AAT (a)

either as it has been as a tournament
or as a league

I like AAT. I like the other ideas.

I haven't time to look at the calendar of tourneys, but I can tell you that summer time reduces my interest greatly. But, I could potentially be involved in shorter events (such as a survivor tourney or two...)

I also wonder if an alternative map league or AAT tourney or .... could occur during the same end of year period as the MPWC. Some of us may not be as interested in multi tourney and would like an alternative? Yes, US 2 player league probably collides.

How's that for being unhelpful?

About the calendar, here's a sketch for 2015.

Again, I'll open a thread very soon to create workgroups (competition formats/ticki/Stats/Tournament Directing/Rules). Workgroups will create a bridge between the forum and the board : the calendar will be reviewed by the competition workgroup.

November NC MPWC (~20th)
---------------------------------------------------
December NC MPWC League (20th)
---------------------------------------------------
January Masters MPWC Finals	League
---------------------------------------------------
February Fusion League
---------------------------------------------------
March AMC/EMC Fusion League
---------------------------------------------------
April AMC/EMC Multi Euro League
---------------------------------------------------
May SPWC/SMC MEMC (finals)	EuroLeague
---------------------------------------------------
June SPWC Multi Asia	EuroLeague
---------------------------------------------------
July MAMC (finals) EuroLeague
---------------------------------------------------
August EuroLeague
---------------------------------------------------
September	NC
---------------------------------------------------
October NC
---------------------------------------------------
November	NC MPWC
---------------------------------------------------
December	NC MPWC

Multi tournaments are planned to be way less time-consuming.
AMC/EMC will start only when Fusion is over.
(4 to 6 dates/player only necessary to wrap everything up down from 8/10 dates).
There's clearly room in July/August/early september for something.
There's also room for some stuff in November/December.

About survivor, i see that more like a QT. Like a monthly or bi-monthly event and maybe set up some kind of point scoring all through the year. That should not compete with anything.

I think we can not have more than one iron in the fire and choices have to be made.
Swiss format concept is interesting, but that requires more work for the TD, a format with set dates and breaks in between rounds.

Perhaps we are looking at all of this one-dimensionally.

There is nothing wrong with considering some tourneys/events to be every other year events, or even in a rotation of 3 years. And, if for some reason, the interest for another map or specialized set of rules increases and for another decreases, things can be changed.

It would also be interesting, to me at least, to have a few QT type events, including survivor, placed on the calendar. If people know they are scheduled (and when) it makes it easier to plan to play. This would not preclude someone coming up with a QT on short notice, just because they want to.

I am hopeful this is more useful than my last.

Yes, I had in mind to set QT dates right away as well as all the Survivor nights (American nights and European nights) at the beginning of the year.
The original idea was to set up a QT before any major event : SPWC, League, NC, Fusion (+ Heroes/Captains QT for NC). I did not manage to follow through this year mainly because I'm not available at european nights during the week.
We can imagine a Swiss QT, a Euro QT or an Asia QT before SMC/EMC/AMC.

About rotation candidates :
It would be a pretty sensitive matter, but definitely an angle to explore.

5 europe
4 usa
3 asia
2 best of 3

3) New York
5 usa
4 asia
3 europe

2 best of 3

4)Zurich

5 asia
4 europe
3 swiss
2 usa

annual ranking and master best 5 players

Paris

5 usa
