So, identification of cheaters will be easy.
|
If is the key word. But realistically here is DOW is not going to hand us over server logs. Plus with all the active games going and all the connections to the server would be quite cumbersome to even get the info we would be interested in getting there.
The thing with IP address tracking is helpful in a since, but lets just say a cheater is playing on computer A attached to his LAN, and has Computer B fired up on an air card that has a different ISP, or has a friend or family member doing the observing. You will not get accurate results unless that player is using the same computer with different browsers open, or another machine on the same LAN.
One thing I would like to see but this is a big "IF" as well is if DOW did make it that if I was on an IP Address of XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX and in a game, I could not observe that game from any machine that lies within that same IP address. But going forward that would effect people who live in the same house hold who may have a significant other playing and be able to go in and observe the game or what not.
It is a shame that we have to be having this conversation in general. Trust is a big issue for me but I do not like the idea of closed/hidden card games in tourneys I think it personally takes the fun out of watching the game.... I look at observing other people and how they play their combos dealt can be used as a learning tool as well. Especially for those who are new and wanting to learn. But that is just my two cents. I have 0 tolerance for cheating but here we are speculating on a case of suspicious play.

This is really a point, I think. I've learnt a lot of things from watching games( not only NC). I was a meidorce player for some time(also not playing too many games in that time)but at some moment I decided to find out, who is at the top of the rating list( I think it was Womble #1 and Anu_ #2 at that time), and then I stumbled over an pbservable game by Anu_(looking at my games history that probably was in 2007, when I stopped playing multi). Even an idiot would have been noticicing, that taking 44 cards blindly and only then laying tracks must be some kind of strategy. I thought over it, and understood it could be good and started to try it out. Shortly after that I was at ~1550. and obviously I needed to understand more tricks and so on to improve further, which I mainly did by observing, and of course battling stronger opps than before.8
There were also some long periods I didnt play(also because it was not free anymore, if you got(like me) a code from the board game that lasted for half a year(?)),but you dont seem to lose TTR-skill so fast upon not playing, I really picked it up again last year.

fortunately it's not that easy ...
If beginner dandee (2 years ago) got a call from his friend, indeed nobody would have noticed.
If rising star dandee (now) wins many games by always taking the right decision we'll get suspicious.
If top player dandee (in 2 years) wins many games by always taking the right decision we'll analyse the games and check, whether his decisions seem in line with the decision other top players would take.
Several gross deviations can be enough to decide - sorry, we don't trust you, we'd rather not have you play NC.
Tournaments are by invitation, no legal proof needed actually to reject a player.
Of course this is (and has to be) handled with utmost care to avoid false accusations - but it can be done and is done if needed.

I just played with retepgolf.
He joined my game and even said hi(when I join his games he usually doesnt). I had tons of locos and felt like I was clearly going to win. Maybe he was pissed off by the fact, that I already laid 9 of them(that's all I had), I dont know.
In any case he left and I waited for him, until my waiting timed out, and then I saw him in the lobby, observing a game...

As a reminder, I would continue to keep Awl A Board on our ignore lists. This thread includes some posts from May 2014 where Awl A Board cheated pretty obviously by logging in under another name and seeing his opponents tickets.
I don't know whether he is still cheating. He has won 60 out of 75 games today so far and his score is up to 1643.

BTB Benny,
I had just beaten you pretty handily the previous 2 games, and so in the 3rd game when you left the game very late in the game after I made a key block up north to seal the victory for me, I waited for several minutes and you didn't come back, so I figured you had left on purpose because of your frustrations.
It didn't affect the outcome of the game that late in the game because you were already beat, so I finished the final couple turns to end the game.
So I'm sorry I played against the bot the final couple moves, but it appeared that you had left out of frustration because you were beat for the 3rd time in a row. And then you didn't come back after several minutes and there were only a couple moves left.

Problem player: FIEREGENTENAAR
Problem type: Delaying the game
Game: TTR USA, 2 players
I played a game against fieregentenaar and blocked him from Vancouver. As I remember I was the creator of the game and there was no "no blocking" topic. Anyway, as a result of blocking, fieregentenaar started whining and got botted maybe 10 times or more trying to avoid game ending. So the game lasted maybe 45 minutes.
I highly recommend not to play with fieregentenaar because he has his own rules.
PS. I played the game with steam nick "Wuonex1". Just told if someone wants to check my game history.

Mentioning the name of a player who is not involved in the community does not help in anything. Send him a pm including the etiquette, that's more productive.
When you have issues with your connection, when you have issues scheduling matches, issues with the etiquette, and issues with multiple players: look at yourself for a second, you may find an answer to all your problems.
Here's a reminder of the etiquette.
If DoW could make this post sticky on top of the forum, that would greatly help and would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
General etiquette for 1500+ games online.
Communication
1. A competitive player has to contribute to the players' atmosphere by respecting the etiquette. Competitive players are encouraged to explain and promote the etiquette to non-competitive players.
2. Promote trust and high level of camaraderie by being courteous and by using appropriate vocabulary.
3. Solve your personal issues with another player by pm.
In case of a bot
4. When a competitive player is replaced by a bot in a casual game, every player should leave the game by default. You can still get your ranking points later in another game.
5. If the player is unknown or new, inform the player about the etiquette in the lobby or via pm before ignoring him. If a player repeatedly plays against a bot on purpose, use your ignore list and report the situation to the board who will handle the issue.
Games
6. Set up reasonable requirements for casual games. 1600+ will guarantee a quality game, no need to go beyond that. A 1500+ requirement will give potential future competitive players a chance to face the highest level of play. Be inclusive whenever it's possible.
7. Before kicking a non-competitive player out of your game, take some time to explain score requirements. Not every player is aware of the competitive language.
8. By joining a 1500+ game, you will likely face a block at some point. Block is a valid strategy to win a game and is part of the game. This may also occur in multis when two players find an interest in doing so.
Tabletalk
9. To encourage a team-block in a multi-game is not allowed.
To complain about your present or past game is unnecessary and alters the fun purpose of casual games.
Tournament etiquette
General remarks
The Tournament Director settles disputes and covers any grey area in the rules. All his decisions are final and shall not be contested in the forum.
Captains are responsible for their team's reputation: they are therefore accountable for their teammates' behavior.
Etiquette and rules violation
The TD can use a range of sanctions: warning, loss a game, loss of a match, exclusion. Steps may be skipped.
In case of repeated violations, the board can deny a player the right to enter future tournaments
Tabletalk
Avoid comments regarding a past game during a match. Your opponent is probably as aware as you are of the game you just played.
Let your opponent know you need some time to think by typing "." in the chat box.
Suggestion : Typing "." can also notifies your opponent that tabletalk is over. (Your opponent can estimate that general comments may have turned into whining)
Communication
Signing up for a tournament is the commitment to complete your match within the set time scale.
Contact/maintain communication with your opponent as soon as possible via private message/email.

The problem is that that is simply not the general etiquette for 1500+ games online.
If it is intended to guide how players should behave, then it would need to be adopted in a more official sense and posted where most online players would read them. Alternatively, if it is intended to codify how players actually do behave, then rules 3-7 are incorrect, because most players do not follow those guidelines.
I recall that you started a thread previously with that as its initial post and drew a few comments, but that doesn't come close to making it binding in any sense.
Of course it is easier to establish etiquette for tournaments because that is a more cohensive, smaller group more likely to read these forums. My comments pertain just to the purported etiquette for 1500+ games online.

I have tried following guideline 7, but I always stop, when more and more low rated players enter my games (because they always leave and come back, and I never know if they read my chat).
I am actually not using pw (so not like 1500+ pw 15, but I rather just write 1500+ ). Do you think it is better to use a pw, so that not so many players, who didnt understand the conept, join in the first place? I did not use it, because, when I was starting to get a better player (maybe around 1550), it took me quite some time before understanding(at least that is how I remember), that all those "private" games are actually not private at all, but just asking for score requirements, that I would sometimes have met.
So I thought, if I play 1500+ rather then 1600+, it would make sense, not to have a pw, so that maybe other players that have the same misunderstanding could maybe still understand they are welcome to play me.
What do you think about that, Sysy? Should I put a pw, or just be more patient?

TUS White Train,
FYI...I have never quit a game on purpose, even with crap tickets. So enough with your lies.
Many times I have gotten disconnected, and many times opponents will play against my bot.
You have played 2 entire games against my bot after I was disconnected very early. 1 of those games was a multi that I didn't even know I was in because my iPad didn't allow me in the game. Yet you played the whole game against the bot, which even picked tickets...
Yes, folks, an entire multi game against the bot.
