Steam ratings question Thu, 06 April 2017 05:22
Ok, So I am trying to play more games on Steam, but perhaps someone can explain something I do not understand.

When I look in Steam Players lobby, I found 35 players, and only 3 with score above 1500, and 4 with scores above 1400, (two were 1401 and 1409). The next player was 1320. Since I believe players start at 1400, how is it possible to have so many players below 1320? (of the 35 about 7 were below 20 games played, so the percentage would be 75% 21 of 28.)

Are Steam p-layers not playing each other, or are losses counting for more in over there? OR did people not start at 1400 on Steam?

Start at 1500, not 1400.

I noticed the same thing, and asked dow a lot of monthes ago about that, I was thinking something was going wrong with scores in steam.
Answer was "all is ok".
I still think all isn't ok.

Players are starting from 1500 already for a few years and the change happened with the revision of web version. Steam not the guilty here

Start 1500 is the same in web version and in steam.

So you should see the same type of scores in java lobby and in steam lobby. And probably around a 1500 average of scores.

But, as onyx noticed here, in steam lobby average of scores is more around 1300-1350. If everybody start at 1500 and the calculation of points good, were are all the points gone ? ? ?

when you are still provisional, you may lose many points with just one game. If you play with a higher-ranked player (>1600) and win then you get many points at once. From 1500 immediately close to your opponent, i.e. around 1600. But if you lose by a lower ranked player (e.g 1300) then you go deep down. The idea is, when provisional, that your ranking should be placed close to your opponent. Steam doesn't show the points earned or lost when one of the players is provisional.

So not a steam issue; it worked the same way in web version too. It is true, however, that there aren't many high ranked players in steam.

Several high ranked players just stopped playing and their points went away with them

It's not about steam or java. Score gaining or loosing is calculated correct on steam.
At the moment I write this post 634 players have score 1500 or higher. There are 13180 players with score lower then 1500.

Think on that and everything will be clear.

Makes sense: provisional players will typically loose from players with e.g. 1350 or 1400 points, so they'll drop quite quickly (and at that time the loss is not limited to 8 points max). The winners do not get the equivalent in points gained as the scoring is asymmetric in the case of provisional players. Hence (at least one reason for) the disappearance of points.

I would have had charts, graphs, equations and a much longer answer, but Kristof and Photios are right. The provisional formula is meant to place you quickly at your correct level, and does so in the first twenty games. I seem to recall that if you win your first game you start 100 ELO above your opponent, and if you lose you start 100 below. After that there are jumps, but none so important as that first placement. After twenty games it is zero sum, but most players quickly descend below 1200 in the java game. Also, I seem to recall that the established player does not get full points, but gets a prorated share, based on the number of games the provisional has played.

hi friends

I am playing on steam for quite a while now. I dropped fast under 1600. Sure I am not one of the top players here, but one reason is certainly, because there are not many players over 1500. But, there are some nice, good players, who are interested in competitive playing. We only can reach them, if we play with them. Somehow i think, we could community keep alive and the tournaments, if we focus on new friendships and not on our score.
It just will take some time.

Greetings, wynona
