Memoir at 2017 World Boardgaming Championships Mon, 13 March 2017 01:29
.
The Memoir tournament at this summer's World Boardgaming Championships will be held Thursday-Friday, July 27-28.

WBC will again be held at Seven Springs Resort, near Pittsburgh, PA, USA. (Details at http://www.Boardgamers.org .)

The tournament will follow our usual schedule: Single elimination, with a Mulligan round the night before. Mulligan is 9pm Thursday evening, which follows an 8pm teaching demo. Main tournament all day Friday, beginning at 9am.

Tournament scenarios: We'll use scenarios from the new Khalkhin Gol expansion. Six battles between the Soviets and the Japanese.

• Mulligan & Round 1: The Khalkhin Gol Spark**
• Round 2: The Halha River Shelling
• Round 3: Attack on the Soviet Outpost**
• Round 4: Down in the Dumps**
• Round 5: Kawatama Bridge**
• Round 6: Bain Tsagan Heights (Breakthrough)

** Starred scenarios will be played to 6 medals, even though they’re normally only played to 5. Also, for “Down in the Dumps,” instead of the Sudden Death rule, we will play that hex as a Turn-Start Permanent Medal objective.

The tournament will begin with a Mulligan round Thursday evening and then run all day Friday.

This is the largest face-to-face Memoir tournament in North America, and the winner earns the right to compete in the online Champions Trophy tournament.

Plus 5 Overlords:

• Thursday 2 PM: Tigers in the Snow, a basic Overlord featuring German Tiger tanks.
• Friday 11 PM: Tetsu No Ame, a Pacific scenario for experienced players, definitely worth staying up late for. Composed by LooneyLlama.
• Saturday 10 AM: Cape Torokina Landings, a unique Pacific amphibious assault in the Solomon Islands, from the Khalkhin Gol expansion.
• Saturday 2 PM: Into the Valley of Death, a desert battle between the Americans and Germans, composed by LooneyLlama.
• Saturday 8 PM: The Khalkhin Gol Encirclement, from the new expansion.

** If an interesting, new scenario is published, the GM reserves the right to make one substitution. Any change will be announced in advance at http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/event/details/?id=1693

Up-to-date information will be posted on this thread and also at http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/event/details/?id=1693

WBC features tournaments for more than 100 different games, such as Battle Cry, C&C Ancients, and C&C Napoleonics. The full convention will be July 22-30.

Also ... DoW games Ticket to Ride (over 250 players last year!), as well as Small World and Pirate's Cove.

Is the WBC always at the end of July?
Because maybe the end of July in 2019 could be a possibility for me.

When they moved to their present location last year, they moved into late July. My impression is that they plan to stay in that slot in upcoming years, but I don't know whether they've confirmed those dates yet.

The official WBC Event Previews have been posted. Memoir is at http://boardgamers.org/wbc17/previews/m44.html

I've inserted the scenario names into the first message on this thread, for both the Tournament and the Overlords.

The WBC home page is http://www.boardgamers.org .

I hope to see you there (but, sorry, I can't pay your travel expenses).

Thanks Sam for organizing the WBC weekend. You guys don't realize how hard he works to make it run smoothly. I highly recommend trying to make it if able. A lot of good people and good competition.

By the way, I will have something special when we play my two Overlord scenarios that will make the games even more fun.

This was WBC's second year at its new location south of Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Attendance in the tournament bounced back up to 49 players.

We played scenarios from the new Khalkhin Gol expansion.

> Round 1 ... The Khalkhin Gol Spark
> Round 2 ... The Halha River Shelling
> Round 3 ... Attack on the Soviet Outpost
> Round 4 ... Down in the Dumps
> Round 5 ... Kawatama Bridge
> Round 6 ... Bain Tsagan Heights (Our first Breakthrough scenario in the tournament.)

(For purposes of the tournament, we played to 6 medals on the scenarios that normally would be to 5, and we changed the Sudden Death objective in round 4 to a permanent turn start objective.)

People who read this Forum or play Memoir Online will recognize the names of many of the players:

1st place: Congratulations to mrmanley31
2nd place: Falkirk
3rd place: Somebody you don't know named Wayne L.
4th place: Tank Commander

Both semi-final matches were decided by a single medal. The finals match was tied on medals, and decided by a 3-figure margin.

My Assistant GMs, who helped run the tournament, demo, and Overlords, were LooneyLlama and Tank Commander. It was good to see DavidXLV (last year's champion), Delawyvern, docsteve, Falkirk, gonzoj, hortense60, japarker, Jedihunter, jfardette, Roundman again. In addition, we had players from the UK and the United Arab Emirates.

mrmanley31 will be invited to participate in the Champion Trophy tournament at the end of this year.

We also played 5 Overlords during the course of the weekend: Cape Torokina Landings and Khalkhin Gol Encirclement (both from the new expansion), Tigers in the Snow, and two by LooneyLlama )Tetsu No Ame and Into the Valley of Death).

Thank you again to my AGMs, LooneyLlama and Tank Commander, who helped answer questions, provided necessary supplies, ran some of the Overlords, taught people what they needed to know, and made things easy for me. (Also, thanks to docsteve for the use of his Battlemap in the finals.)

I look forward to seeing you all next year.
