SCENARIO BOOKLET - No Surrender: 12 New Breakthrough Maps and Overthrough Battles Thu, 24 December 2015 21:54
HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

It's Christmas Eve. On this night in 1944, men of the US 101st Airborne Division huddled in their foxholes against the bitter cold. Bastogne was surrounded, and two days earlier the division's commander had rejected Axis surrender demands. That night, an aerial bombardment hit the town in advance of an attack planned for the next day. The 101st never surrendered, and Patton's spearhead reached them on the day after Christmas.

What a Christmas gift that must have been.

As promised, we've put together a small book of new scenarios. It contains a Battle of the Bulge Overthrough game along with two Guadalcanal OT battles and three bonus scenarios...and it's a Christmas present to our fellow players.

The project is a group effort, so please help me thank Sam1812, Tank Commander, Buidheo, and Gonzalan for their part in all of this. We've had a lot of fun playing these maps on Vassal during the past year, and I've enjoyed every minute.

OK, enough said. We are ready to present "No Surrender" and VERY MUCH hope you enjoy your journey to snowy Bastogne and the jungles of Guadalcanal.

You can download "No Surrender" at either of these links:

Merry Christmas to one and all!

Thanks all for the positive feedback that we've received already. We're overwhelmed!

I have an offer for those who may be interested. Playing the OT games involves a lot of boards and pieces.

Send me a PM if you have access to a large format printer and you would like to get print files for the actual maps. We're working on making those available when there's time after the first of the year.

Cheers!

Hi Kellyn,

I keep getting box.com not responding after the first page is shown. Not sure what my problem could be. Looking forward to checking out the scenarios.

Just wanted to congratulate Kellyn and those who play tested these scenarios. After writing scenarios yourself, you can tell when a scenario will play out well. Believe me, these will play out exceptionally well. The graphics and text are also first rate. I highly recommend downloading them and playing with your friends. I have a couple of clubs I belong to who will be seeing these in the near future. These scenarios would also be great to play on Vassal, especially the triple maps.

Again, great work!

By the way, it would be nice if we could purchase the Battle of the Bulge and Guadalcanal triple maps as paper maps. Each individual one could be put together and covered with plexiglass. It would definitely help with those who don't have enough terrain. It would also look nice if you could use 3 winter Breakthrough maps. Most of us don't have 3 of them. Just a thought.

I got an extra breakthrough board, but we have to play the OT games on Vassal or find enough guys with the boards at the local group. Hmm, maybe time for another expansion from DOW...

I already had two sets of BKTH boards but just ordered another. I have plans to setup the entire thing at a local game shop. I shall start with the Bulge one.

Thank you very much for this fantastic booklet !

Just some small questions.

1) As summary card "Action 28 - Ground Reinforcements" is not yet available in the Cards Compendium on the DoW-website I suppose you refer to reinforcement rules as mentioned in the D-Day Landings expansion page 3-5 ?

2) In the Peiper at Lanzerath scenario, what mines are we supposed to use ? Terrain Pack ? 2x Winter Wars ? ...

3) In the Cabanatuan scenario I see one allied unit with a battle star token (I suppose representing Lt. Col. Mucci). In the special rules there is no mention of this battle star but as this scenario belongs to the "Leadership Stories" I suppose this battle star represents a heroic leader (Actions 8 - Heroic Leaders) ?

Once more : many thanks for a fantastic effort !

Thank you! We will post an errata sheet soon. Meanwhile...

1) D-Day Landings

2) Winter Wars suggested but either should be fine

3) Heroic Leaders rule is in effect

Re:SCENARIO BOOKLET - No Surrender: 12 New Breakthrough Maps and Overthrough Battles Mon, 04 January 2016 23:34
Just finished, yesterday, 2 player game of "Bulge" with Tank Commander , face to face. We used 2 of the 3 maps, St Vith+ Bastogne. Was really well done, but with the 2 maps we played for over 5 hrs!, we came to conclusion for 2 player game 1 map is enough. I played as Germans, St Vith was tough to Breakout as the terrain forces your troops into a bottleneck , which makes it difficult to make a breakout.

Bastogne Map, Rt flank for Germans is where it was easiest to break through and reach middle of board on that flank. Lt flank is very tough as again you are bottle-necked into a town , then a bridge crossing,

Also winter visibility rules slow the hits down!

My one question, Breakthrough vs Overthrough, What is the difference? On the "Bulge" we rolled for reinforcements-which is same as D-Day Landings reinforcements, Does that make it an Overthrough?

I;ve played Breakthrough scenarios before, but never rolled for reinforcements. So is that the difference between the two,Breakthrough vs Overthrough?

BTW, round of applause for the designers and testers of this set, looks to be amazing, just need more players for more than one scenario match.

Thanks, Happy New year to all

Re:SCENARIO BOOKLET - No Surrender: 12 New Breakthrough Maps and Overthrough Battles Tue, 05 January 2016 03:55
"Breakthrough" format is the single extra-deep board.

2-3 years ago, a double-Breakthrough map was given to participants in the French Open. They called it an "Overthrough," and that name has stuck (Before then, some people had talked about, or even designed, double-Breakthrough scenarios, and generally called them "Breaklords.")

Reinforcements are not part of what defines an Overthrough.

In some cases, Overthroughs wind up being pairs of people in parallel play, but teammates really can help each other out and make it a more cooperative game.

Sam

PS - Regarding your tip of the hat to Yossarian and the playtesters ... I really give Yossarian a lot of credit for the way he approached the testing. He sincerely wanted to know what makes a scenario playable and interesting. Maps were reframed, rotated, zoomed in or out. Terrain and units were relocated. He was willing to consider the pros and cons of anything with an open mind, and I think the quality of the final result reflects that.

Docsteve and Tank Commander,

I was just curious. How did the German breakout go in the bottleneck sections of the maps? Looking at the scenario layouts, it would appear to be very difficult to get many units into the center of the map in these two sections. With only one hex available to cross the river was all the fighting near the German baseline?

Hi Eric.

The Germans just chewed up the forward infantry units. Steve had unreal dice with a lot of 2d and some 3d attacks hitting on all cylinders. On one late turn, Steve rolls 11 dice, including several ranged attacks and did not miss once. This allowed the Germans to advance in good order with little loss. I think it took several turns on the Bastogne board before I killed three German units and on St Vith only destroyed 5 units. My one great success was bagging Peiper's Tiger with him in it.

The German spearhead consisted of only a few units, a Tiger, one infantry (helped into position by BEL), an Elite infantry and three panzers. They operated in the area of the seam of St Vith and Bastogne maps.

Although it took several turns for this advance to get going, it was starting to pick steam before my armor could get in the way.

But I just got my 3rd Breakthrough board set today. We can setup the whole 3 mapper and have at it - should only take us 30 hours or so - lol.

It was fun to play this though. Yes, with all the bells and whistles, it is best to have two players per board, not two board per player. Although even with one board it may be best to have a timer going to move things along though. I would recommend 10-15 mins max per player turn.

Re:SCENARIO BOOKLET - No Surrender: 12 New Breakthrough Maps and Overthrough Battles Wed, 06 January 2016 04:03
Timing,

I think what took John (Tank Commander) and I the most time were the reinforcement rolls-then placement, Winter Visibility rules, where you only get hits on ranged attacks with grenades, and all those darn woods and not frozen river.

But actually, it was pretty realistic to actual battle, so I would say it was well done.

After the first play through of those 2 maps, St Vith and Bastogne, I went home and studied the maps well. You really need to take a long look at the terrain and your forces before you let the Panzers loose. Looking back , I think I pushed through the initial defenders on St Vith RT Flank, but then got tied up with the bridge, then kept pounding away.
I think , if you have the cards , the best area for German Breakthrough is the lt flank of St Vith and the Rt flank of Bastogne. Where the 2 map edges are, that is where I was able to start moving to center of map, using a combonation of units from both edges.

Doc out

What you think John?

An AAR from a Jan 23rd ftf gaming session from planet Jupiter Games....

docsteve and I played two games.

The first was a two mapper from Operation Watch Tower - Lunga Point and Matanikau. As there were no Winter Visibility Rules (lol) and no Reinforements rolls, I figured the two of us could handle a two map combination.

My Japanese massed on my left on Lunga Point and why not. I had two LEFT ASSAULTs AND INF ASSAULT which would end up ordering a total of 30 units. The Marine defenses were outmatched although it took a while before the full weight of my attack was brought to bear. There was some action in the center but this was really a left flank show for me.

But for all my orders on the Lunga Point map the Marines still killed off as many units as I did and this board ended up being tied 6 (27) to 6 (25).

Some of my Lunga Point units from my left moved over onto the Matanikau map to assist a push there.

My Matanikau Japanese used two TFHs (total of 11 orders for the two turns) and chewed up the defenders. Eight US units were elimianted in the center of this map. Of my 20 medals, 2 were for Beach Control, 6 units eliminated on the Lunga Point map and the rest (12 units) eliminated on Matanikau.

My massed Japanese attacks (Lunga Point left, Matanikau rigth and left) just plain overpowered the defenders.

By the end of the 5th turn on Matanikau, I held a 7 to 4 lead and picked up medal 10 on that board by the end of my 6th turn.

The second game - Matanikau - thsi time Steve was the Japanese. Steve started with DHQ and moved four of his left infantry into contact with my units but could only manage 3 hits with 12 dice. My RIGHT ASSAULT orders 5 units and kills off two of his infantry and wounds another. Steve follows up with CLOSE ASSAULT but with only 2 infantry and only one at full strength but 7d from two attacks only gets 1 more hit. Looks like my units are good at ducking in the jungle. The battle rages on my right but my forces hold firm and I lead 4 to 1 and the end of the 5th turn. A Japanese TFH orders 5 infantry and a tank but three infantry have to fire from range as they are not close enough to close with my lines. Two other infantry do battle from adjacent hexes but am not sure if both were at full strength. It looks like from my AAR Steve was shorted 1d in at least one of his infantry attacks if not two. In the heat of battle and the long day of gaming I lost track of this - my bad, sorry Steve - and we were not on the same page here. I lost only one infantry here. My ARTY BOMBARD then kills off a tank on the beach and now it is a 6 to 2 game. The Japanese armor keeps rolling and we trade kills over the three turns but my three kill 9th turn ends the contest with a 10 (33) to 5 (25) score. I think if Steve did not get off to such a bad start dice wise (5 for 24 on his first 4 turns) his left attack may have posed a good deal of trouble.

Re:SCENARIO BOOKLET - No Surrender: 12 New Breakthrough Maps and Overthrough Battles Fri, 29 January 2016 21:14
An AAR from a Jan 9th ftf session:

Britt easily killed off one of my center forward infantry with two 2d attacks after my 3d AMBUSH on a panzer missed. But the other dug in forward infantry would survive for several more turns.

The Germans tried pushing forward on my left and took heavy losses. They also tried to get through my right via the lone forest hex.

Peiper and his Tiger got rolling and in two turns killed off a full strength tank and two 2 fig infantry to account for three medals. But on the following turn the Tiger was eliminated and Peiper died with it for two US Medals and boost the US lead to 11 to 5. The game was ended a turn later when a panzer in the center with its back to the frozen river was killed off by US units. The final scroe was 12 (36) to 5 (31)

By that time my armor had moved up in the center and one my right and held firm.

The Germans got a Supported Infantry, three SW Infantry, three infantry, two HTs and on their last turn, an Elite Panzer along with 13 OTM orders from their Rein Rolls. I got an Elite Tank on my first turn, three SW Infantry, three infantry, a Supply Truck and a tank along with 14 OTM orders.

Even though the Germans only have a few hexes in which to push through on this map to cross the river, I think Britt was not aggressive enough in moving his forces forward and thus his piecemeal attacks were easily turned away and allowed my armor to move up and support my forward forces too soon.

SPOILER ALERT (tip for Axis generals)

Hint, hint....

The Bulge Overthrough game in NO SURRENDER covers the first three days of the attack.

At the center of the German advance, 116th Panzer slogged through difficult terrain in the gap between Bastogne and St. Vith along poor roads. The U.S. Army produced detailed maps for its official history of the battle.

Part of the 116th shared the best available bridge over the Our River with 2nd Panzer.

Axis commanders take note of the two routes taken.

Which paths will you follow?

Hi Yossarian44,

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I just wanted to drop a note and say thank you so much for these scenarios.

I heard about the Wacht Am Rhein scenarios from the WBC a few years ago, and have been searching around trying to find the scenarios. Thanks to a member on BGG who has Vassal I was able to find this thread and download the booklet.

Thanks for all the time you put into it!

These scenarios are endorsed by Richard Borg. Will they go in the 'Official Scanario' section, or the 'Scenarios from the Front, section?
