having tried dragonstones as a 2 player game, there are obviously some serious shortfalls. Do you guys have an idea of how to change it or should I start a thread in the general forum?

We never thought of this game as a two player game and, frankly, I don't see how to make it work - probably better play a true two players game!

The problem that I see with a two player variant is that I have yet to come across a bidding mechanism that is interesting with only two players (it's kind of like Newton's Universal Law of Gravitation in that regard, it's trivial with two bodies and inherently intractable with more )
So the alternative would be to build a mechanism that automatically plays a third bid from simple, automated game rules. Though I will not guarantee it can't be done, nothing comes to mind there.
I do have some variant ideas centered around deck building (but which would require a deck per player, and several of the new characters introduced on this site and Bruno's), that could be interesting even with two players, but they do not solve the two players bidding issue outlined above.
So... if you feel brave and think you may have discovered or stumbled onto something unique, please feel free to share it, but the odds are against it

I see what you're saying.
It seems to me that with fewer players, strategy becomes more important than luck. The problem with 2 is that there is imbalance. I was thinking of reducing the cards to Aincent dragon, Wizard, Magician, +1 dragon, +1or2 other. Cards like the thief and brigand become too powerful. Throw in some extra common gold, a free amulet and/or witch toke, and the strategy becomes very important. It wouldn't have the same chaotic dynamic as larger games, but the dyanmic between 6 and 3 player games is different also.

I have an idea for a 2 player variant.....
After an auction between 2 players is won....roll a 6 sided die.
If a 1 or 2 comes up..then that card is taken by the evil black wizard and discarded and noone gets that card...you still must
pay what you bid as per rules.
However, if you pay 1 (or 2? what do you think) Silver coins you
can prevent the black wizard from getting the card and the auction winner gets the card.
Any good?

not a bad idea.
I have since gon on to modifying the "2XDS" idea into a more workable yet unrecogniseable game.
You may see it later if I work out the kinks.
