Wishlist kinda... Tue, 17 October 2006 21:33
This game looks magnifique, and i can hardly wait for it..
But i have to say that the game will never be complete in my head unless we see: Elven archers, dwarfs with axes(why do they have swords??) and an elven bow as a weapon.

I realize that this is a theme for expansions and blisters and too early to discuss, but please just tell me that it will be there someday so my heart can rest.

heroes and barbarians would be cool as well, but the above mentioned is a must! Cool

I suppose the dwarven Swordsmen is because the sword-icon on the banner - if there are axe-dwarves, there should also be a axe on the banner -
but for the rest i go with you - there are some absolute must for the expansion (elves, orks, heroes etc.)
but I'm not sure i could stand another teaser before i have the base game in my own hands - I'm that greedy for the game yet, that i could not deal with more greed for epansion that are planned for summer next year Cool

Dude

An Undead Army would be WAY cool. In fact I expect and Undead Army as an expansion, and I will buy it then use it to put the boots to my opponent.

I hope the first big expansion is elves and orks, with maybe more dwarves and goblins if they aren't fully represented in the main game.

The second big expansion should be undead, with a new swamp board.

I think we will see dwarvs and goblins in the blister expansions, as a way of filling out those races.

The nice thing about this game is that the possibilities are almost limitless. I agree, an undead expansion would be cool, although I expect that the first few expansions will be filling out the "base game" groups.

Maybe I have overlooked this, but is there an estimate on what the release schedule for expansions will be? 1-2 per year, or something more frequent? Smaller or larger than the Memoir '44 expansions? I will say that I like the design, content, and pricing on the Memoir '44 expansions, and I think that concept would work well for Battlelore.

I think we were told that "larger" expansions akin to the M44 expansions would be out twice a year. I think the first one is slated for June and the 2nd October if I remember correctly - which is on par for their normal releases. The small blister packs are supposed to be out monthly. Not sure what comprises a blister pack - if it is going to only be like creatures such as the Earth Elemental and Hill Giant or if we will see more armies. I would assume a mixture of both.

From the iCve2 interview '
September 11

Q; Is that what you meant, when you called BattleLore a "foundation game," that you are going to have a product stream?

EH:  Absolutely, the plan for next year is that starting in March we are going to have a couple of pieces releasing every month, not a lot, just a couple so that we don't swamp retailers and gamers.  In addition to these individual "elite" figure releases, we plan to have two major expansions a year -- in June of next year we are looking at releasing an army box set.  A the same time in order to keep the interest up and to keep the gamers coming back to the stores on a regular basis, we are going to release a couple of small things, special figures that will keep the game in the limelight.

Ok, elves and undead are definitely needed. But....I would like to suggest a few sets that would "cross-over" to the historical side if wanted: dwarf war-wagons (Hussites); Emperor's Army (Byzantines); Shire fyrd (Human militia); Steppe Raiders (Mongols). Just a few examples.

Thomas, I like how you are thinking. I hope DoW are watching your post. Now let me throw in my 2 cents. I would like for the game to stay at the PG level and not move on to the PG-13 level. I have children who are little young to expose to Demons, Undead, Barbie, and other evil creatures. Since my kids are about the only humans I get to play games with, I hope the game stays at a level where we can all play. My concern is that as the game gets older and the temptation to add horror to continue to attract player will lead DoW down the horror path with the game.

I don't mind adding generic undead armies; that isn't of need into horror...

Undead are a common enough fantasy evil... (Ok, I'm still thrilled by the stop motion skeletons from the early 20th C monies I saw in the late 20th C.)

But I definitely don't want Giegeresque illos, nor skull motifs everwhere...

Like StyxParadox, I play m44 with my daughter... she's 7, and Conan movies enraptured her, but resulted in rough nights...

Hi,

I agree normal undead are ok, Dragons would also be good. As for daemons some children may find them scary. My son who will be 2 soon rolls the dice when we play Doom, but to him at this stage they are only plastic figures.

As I think of it - undeads need a necromancer - and this one is missing in the war-council - may be the guest???? Twisted Evil

Why not add first some special troups for each member of the council - so you could create armies that represent your council the best way - and to make the best use of their capacities? This could still be elves or barbarians or dragons...

a necromancer would still be cool to rise some killed troups.... Twisted Evil

Finding the right level to call a game "PG" versus "PG-13" is tricky mix. Skeletons and undead (e.g. "halloween") creatures do not seem bad, but demons and the like seem to draw flack. Given the general family friendly nature of their games, DOW might want to steer clear of them. They do not bother me, but at one point I have been accused of demon-worship because I played Chaos in Warhammer.

Cant see the problem. Deamons are not things that i want, and i like the traditonal fantasy stuff more than the horror things. But we choose ourselves what to buy and not.

Well as I plan to use BL to run Campaigns in "other Fantasy Worlds"(1st Age ME,Hyboria,Young Kingdoms,Westros & as such I would hope that Component figs would be forth coming.

I'm a Gamer & Painter so I could really use more Human forces,if you want to customise your Armies.Just a box set of the basic Human Troops from the core game would be great.

I know the Banners handle that but a lot of the fun for me is having specific armies with their own colors & shield designs
& for that you need more figs.It would seem a win/win for
everyone,DoW would sell more figs & those of us wanting custom
armies would be happy(but poorer Very Happy ),otherwise your going to have to buy other company figs to get what you want.

Re:Wishlist kinda... Mon, 30 October 2006 04:37
I am excited by the possibilities that this game offers and I can't wait to see what is in store. My wish is that any race that is added will be given a special "BattleLore" treatment.A re-imagining of the tried-and true-chestnuts that we have all played in so many other games, read in so many other books, and seen in so many other movies.
An Elf should always be an Elf,for example, but a "BattleLore Elf" should have something special associated with it-an ability,a weapon type,a look, or a background- something different, that ties it to this game and makes it a fresh, new, viable choice to use for an army.
All the races should be given a "spritzing up" to make them conform to a certain "BattleLore Vision", whatever that will be.
Just because Tolkien created it,and did it very well, I might add, doesn't necessarily mean it has to keep being recycled, without change, beyond the point of cliche'.
Don't get me wrong, I understand the need to include the staples that make up what we consider as "Fantasy"(This game simply MUST have Dragons!!-Please oh Please!!!),and there is no sense in re-inventing the wheel, but, does this wheel have to be the same color, the same size, the same wheel we always use?
My wish is that the BattleLore races become something familiar, yet, uniquely "BattleLoric",if you will.
I believe that this is what will give the game staying power, quite hopefully, and make it rise far above the MANY other game titles in this genre.
Anyway it goes,I'm in for the ride.Got my Hill Giant and Primer and I can't wait for the battles to begin...

I completely agree. I hope this game doesn't go generic fantasy on us. The setting looks promosing for some interesting additions.

It would also be nice to see each race with it's own unique "rules" or whatever. (Like the Japanease have different rules in M44.) It looks like that may be the way they're going, since the Dwarves are always Bold and the Goblins are always frightened.

Should be interesting to see what's coming down the pipe.

To a point, true.

The line's included range may invoke the wrath of the Fundamentalists... Be they Christian, Jew, Moslem, or "other." Many religious groups are dead opposed to even allowing stories about the vanquishing of demons, let alone someone playing them in a game.

Skeletons are not terribly powerful imagery; demons are. Few people believe in animated skeletons; many believe in demons. Skeletons seldom cross over into religious debate; demons are at the heart of much religious fear.

Inclusion of skeletons will usually result in the offended not buying the offensive supplements. Inclusion of Demons and Demonologists, especially as a playable side, without a clear condemnation on the outside of the package (or, as Palladium Games does, on the title page of their books) will often be seen as sufficient grounds to boycott the line, not just the offending product.

This very issue is why AD&D 2nd ed dropped the term "Demon" and "Devil" for made-up terms. Likewise, witches were changed in Basic D&D to "wokani."

WOTC is less careful than the Old TSR was... but also has Hasbro to back them.

Besides, avoiding the whole moorcockian Law/Chaos issue and demons WILL set the line well off from WFB.

I'm not a Christian, but I was a bit surprised to see that DoW chose to use a smoldering pentagram as the custom tile that comes with the Earth Elemental. Then again, the Cleric Lore Master icon has a Christian cross, so maybe this is just equal time for pagans.

2 things... Historically the pentagram (much like the swastika) was a symbol of peace and harmony until they were associated with an evil organization or an evil thing Evil or Very Mad . I am a christian and I dont find it at all offensive...

Yup. It sure was. I'm not offended by it either. I think sensitive individuals are more likely to take a swastika in stride (in a WWII boardgame) because it was the symbol of an evil political/military regime. Whereas the pentagram has religious connotations, and people tend to get much more bristled by religious topics than political ones.

Anyway, I just thought it was a ballsy move on the part of DoW, considering they must know what kind of reputation that's going to get them with the (surprisingly large) faction of hypersensitive Christians around the world.

The pentagram is a "traditional" symbol for illustrations of summoning circles.

I doubt that neopaganism had much to do with it. But it matters little to me.

A lot of these issues came up with Mage Knight and even Heroscape. Honestly, I never saw the point in it. Many of the kids who played the games never would have thought about these matters in the first place. It was only a few adults who thought of these things and made issues out of them. I can recall the D&D fiasco of the 70's when some adults thought the game was evil and prevented their kids from playing it. A lot of good that did.

I think they chose the right color tho... Blue is a very neutral and passive color. If they would have made it red... more people would be offended... one reason why coca cola isnt popular in some areas... RED can... and red as we have learned is an aggressive color...

Since the setting of Uchronia seems to be a historical 1390's Europe, with a fantasy overlay of course, it does seem as if the more traditional fantasy armies fit better. This would tend more towards the orcs/undead/evil humans than towards the demonic/chaos sort of bad guy. This is fine with me. I have never been able to develp an interest in the extremely elaborate theories/levels of demons or Chaos legions or whatever presented in other fantasy systems. Keep it simple. Give each type of army a special characteristic or two, and balance all the pure fantasy types (orcs, undead) with "bad raider human" types (Vikings, Mongols, mercenaries, etc).

Wow, this has come a long way from my initial comment. I need to check the forums more often. I know everyone has different opinions on the subject. I am just wanting to play the game with my kids and as a good responsible adult, I must make some kind of judgement as to what is appropriate for them. Each of you who have kids may make a totally different choice for your children. My only hope is that DoW will make my choice easy by avoiding the more horror or based creatures. (I use horror in a very broad sense)

But in order to show my Ace(s) and to start more discussion, I will say that I am a middle aged man who has the $$$ to spend on the game and the expansions and I will as DoW continues to make great games that I can play with my whole family. The question then is: Who does DoW believe will provide the most revenue? Middle aged fathers like me who are concerned about what is appropriate for their kids? I really don't know, I am just using this forum to hopefully influence DoW in my direction. Please feel free to do the same.

@StyxParadox
I'm pretty sure you won't be able to influence DoW very much - seems to me that they know exactly what they do

But I'm pretty sure also that they will stay let's call it on the "Lord of the Ring Side" of Fantasy. What I mean by this is, that I expect lot's of 'evil' creatures (Orks, may be some sort of demons or very old creatures, Barbarians etc.) like you can find em in LotR, but I also think, that they will not start making things like blood or human sacrifices and other rather nasty things, which you also may find in other Fantasy-TT-Games.

I expect BL to be a Game with lot's of magic and powerfull spells, demons (middle age witghout demons is not middle-age) and forces, mythic places, but still without that 'occult' (?) and bloody side, fantasy may turn to. Smile

I am a 30-somthing male elementary educator. I like to use games as an after-school activity. I'm hoping that BL is one of those that I will be able to use.

I've committed to a preorder. So long as the line doesn't go the "grotesque" nor demon-army routes, both of which I find simply unappealing, I'll probably continue to buy and play.

I look forward to any and all subsequent releases, but one vanilla unit I'd really like to see ASAP is human spears. I'd also like to see pikemen, but I could see how that would be problematic with the plastic being used. Heck, you could convert a spear unit to pikes in a pinch.
