New to Game, Marklin comparison question Sat, 21 November 2009 21:35
Hello everyone!

I'm new to TTR and I'd like some background on a question of mine.

I just wanted everyone's opinion as to why do you think Alan Moon decided to remove the longest route bonus from Marklin and replaced it with the "most routes" bonus:

Does the "most routes" bonus favor building long tickets versus short tickets or vice versa?

Does the "most routes" bonus balance the game more or unbalance it in your opinion?

And from 1910, and Nordic Countries. Also, Big Cities uses neither and Mega Game uses both. (I'm not sure on 1912, don't have it yet.)

Marklin is a different game. It's not a case of "balancing it more" or "unbalancing it". Each game in the series brings together a different set of properties, that hopefully combine to present multiple possible winning strategies in each individual game, but with different sets of workable strategies appearing in each one.

So you really can't isolate a single factor like that. Marklin also divides the tickets into long and short piles, presents tracks of different lengths to the original game (quite a few connections of length 7), adds passengers and merchandise, and simply has a different board geometry.

I consider Marklin to be by far the most strategically complex TTR game, and enjoy it a lot, but I don't think your questions concerning it have a direct answer.
