Silver Coins

Hi Bruno,
I have question regarding silver coins.
Does silver coin have any refered value compared to gold coins? Ex. like 10 silver coins = 1 gold coin Or is it that silver coins have lower value than gold coin no matter how many player has?
BTW, I love your games and we play it all the time in Tokyo, Japan. =)

Silver coins don't have a higher or lower value than gold coins, they have a different use. Gold (fairy or common) is used in standard auctions, but never in tie-break auctions. Silver coins are used only in tie break auctions.

Yes we will try and announce one (or two ) winners shortly(ie before the end of February), we've just been busy and I'd like to have the New Character database up and running before we do so. So... stay tuned!

Clarification for the Enchantress
|

I know this is nitpicking question, but I know the people I play with. So I'd like to cover the question before I introduce the game to them.
The rules for the Fairy card explicitly state that the fairy gold taken from the bank is kept for the rest of the game. The Enchantress also seems to give the same power, but doesn't mention keeping the fairy gold.
Am I correct in assuming that the fairy gold from the enchantress is kept for the rest of the game?

Sorry your right, I just want to see a february winner. It's overdue.
I think that nothing more new can be said, so, let the vishous character ideas flow.
You might consider adding to the shadow demon "The winner may choose to make null this effect" or "the winner does not lose a point" or something to that effect. But all choices are up to you.

We agree it's overdue. We have picked the winner ten days ago now, and even have the illustration. Unfortunately we have not had a chance to make the final cards in three languages out of it yet, which explains why you haven't seen it. It will _not_ take us so long for March I promise. it's just that we've been a bit busy shall we say, given the new products in the pipeline

No Coin Bids
|
Fri, 02 May 2003 02:54

Do you win if you bid no Gold? If I bid 0 Gold and no one else bids, do I win? If everyone bids 0 Gold, is it a tie which will result in a tie break bid with silver coins? Put it in another way, can you win without Gold or you need silver coins? If you can't, then when everyone has no Gold to bid, the turn will end even if there are unauctioned cards?
The rules didn't mention what happens if you bid 0 Gold or the null case of no bids.
Thanks

If no one bids, this means that no one wants the card, therefore it is not used and simply discarded.

Bluffing with sound
|
Fri, 30 May 2003 03:50

I recently picked up Fist of Dragonstones with a few of my friends and we all love the game. The first thing we noticed, was that the barriers that come with the game are too low for our playing setup, and we were reading hand motions to determine what others bid. We resolved this by using other barriers; small boxes, birthday cards, whatever is in the area.
I guess it's human nature, but next we began listening for the sounds of the coins hitting each other to determine what a player's bid might be. We all developed our own ways to throw off the others when grabbing our coins (pick them up, drop them, shuffle them to other hands, etc); we decided to name this bluffing. In one tie-breaker, to throw off my opponent, i grabbed some of my fairy gold (rather noisably) and put my fist out to set my bid. He had bid 2 silver coins, and i opened my fist of 4 fairy gold. He won the bid 2 silver to 0 silver, and i put my fairy gold back. The majority of us saw nothing wrong with this, it's on par with having two pairs in poker and smiling like an idiot to make your opponents think you have something bigger. One friend however, began to argue that it changes the mechanics of the game. To the rest of us, it seems that ideal conditions for this game would be like playing over the internet where there is no way possible to determine other players' bids. So listening for sounds should not be considered part of the game mechanics. Also, like mentioned earlier, how is this different than a bluff in poker?
So in short, from the source, what is the ruling on 'sound bluffing'? Is there a problem with me placing a bid of 3 silver and 2 fairy gold; then returning the 3 silver because they don't count in a regular auction? And vice versa in a tie-breaker auction?
Thanks for your time, sorry if i made this seem a little long winded.

Since it doesn't change the game itself, it's really as you wish and I don't think an official ruling is needed

We certainly make noise as well fumbling around with the coins, though we tend to make more noise when we are bluffing. Be careful of that.
The rules do state the first bidding is to be done in gold and the tie-breakers in silver. Since you used gold in a tie-breaker to "bid", consistent with the rules, you should not be bringing it back behind your screen unless the turn is over.
For my group, all bluffing from behind the screen is downright expected. I'd suggest doing a better job of faking putting coins in your hand (whether noisily or not).
However, majority rules in "House Rules". Establish your own personal rules for bluffing, and the return of coins that you cannot normally use to bid. Do that prior to the start of the game and I don't see any problem with it.

I've always played that way-it helps. I have also mastered making virtually the exact movements regardless of my bid, but that's difficult.
If you really want to go the extra mile, get some extra disks and paint them white or purple or something. Then there will be no issues.

The problem that I see with a two player variant is that I have yet to come across a bidding mechanism that is interesting with only two players (it's kind of like Newton's Universal Law of Gravitation in that regard, it's trivial with two bodies and inherently intractable with more )
So the alternative would be to build a mechanism that automatically plays a third bid from simple, automated game rules. Though I will not guarantee it can't be done, nothing comes to mind there.
I do have some variant ideas centered around deck building (but which would require a deck per player, and several of the new characters introduced on this site and Bruno's), that could be interesting even with two players, but they do not solve the two players bidding issue outlined above.
So... if you feel brave and think you may have discovered or stumbled onto something unique, please feel free to share it, but the odds are against it

I see what you're saying.
It seems to me that with fewer players, strategy becomes more important than luck. The problem with 2 is that there is imbalance. I was thinking of reducing the cards to Aincent dragon, Wizard, Magician, +1 dragon, +1or2 other. Cards like the thief and brigand become too powerful. Throw in some extra common gold, a free amulet and/or witch toke, and the strategy becomes very important. It wouldn't have the same chaotic dynamic as larger games, but the dyanmic between 6 and 3 player games is different also.

I have an idea for a 2 player variant.....
After an auction between 2 players is won....roll a 6 sided die.
If a 1 or 2 comes up..then that card is taken by the evil black wizard and discarded and noone gets that card...you still must
pay what you bid as per rules.
However, if you pay 1 (or 2? what do you think) Silver coins you
can prevent the black wizard from getting the card and the auction winner gets the card.
Any good?
