Looking for real balanced scenarios ... Sat, 19 January 2008 14:54
Hi all

as wrote in a preview post I'm in charge of organizing a tournament here in Modena. We have played the first session (3 scenarios) and now we have to play the 2nd one (3 scenarios) and the finals (3 more scenarios).

Since the tournament formula is more themed than balanced, players are going to play the same faction (axis or allies) for all the tournament.

so, what I really need, are balanced scenarios that could be a tight battle.

I'm looking for official scenarios (I have the Air Pack too, so the revised one are good!) on all the 4 fronts, since I want to let people play and try all the expansions.

Have you suggestions which scenarios could be used ? More hints you could provide better the tournament will be.

Thank you and good play

Go to the Scenarios main page:
http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44/en/content/scenarioapp/

In the far right column you will see how many games have been played from each scenario. Just to the left of that is the breakdown for how many times the Allies won/Axis won.

For example, Pegasus Bridge has been won 1071 times vs the Axis 500 wins. just go downt he list and see which ones are nearly indentical. Unfortunately, we do not have statistics on the Air Pack scenarios yet.

Since I like you, here's the data. The 2nd column - No. - is the original scenario numbers. The 3rd column - Al:Ax (Qty) - is the percentage of wins for the Allies vs the Percentage of wins for the Axis and the Qty is the number of game reported.

I sorted these by most equal win ratios (50:50 being perfect) and then sorted so the most games reported were first in each category (the more numbers indicating the more reliable the percentages are).

Dear Coltsfan,
Thanks for the work on the scenario balance list. It is very helpful to have this tool to use in choosing scenarios. I prefer to have the weighting in the scenario similar to the actual historical outcome. I know others though who always want balance for the sake of competition. Great job!

Thank you! Really great and useful! I discovered I have used some of really unbalanced scenarios in the 1st session ... I'll try to compensate with the 2nd one!

Really great and useful post!

good play

Don't forget though, the way Memoir 44 works each player gets a chance to play as the Axis and the Allies side of a battle. Even if a scenario is lopsided, the players switch sides so it all evens out! Cool

Unless there isn't time to switch sides...in which case I would hate to be Axis for the "Pegasus Bridge"! Laughing

There are ways to go about setting up tournaments so that you don't have to rely on the balance of the scenario. There is an option if you only have time to play one side per game as well.

Just a thought so you can freely play whatever you want and know that things are still fair.

Thank you. I was used to make tournament switching side but this time I have tried to make a thematic tournament, with fixed side and fixed team.

I would also put emphasis on the 4 different fronts letting players trying all the expansions and making really important and interesting the team performance thanks to major amount of players bring to the finals by the winning team.

I'm sure this is not the best way to make a balanced tournament but it is something new and the players was quite satisfied as long as the scenarios wasn't too much unbalanced!

thank you and good play!

That is like a walk in the park (32%) compared to being the Germans in Arnhem Bridge where they only win 17% of the time.

Thanks for the post Coltsfan. I have printed it out to refer to for the times when I can only play one game.

Colt

Thanks for the info.

I'm presuming most of that data was pre-AirPack. And thus since some of the scenarios have changed, it probably might be nice to maybe have DoW archive that info and start anew on doing battle reports.

If not, is there any way to differentiate between reports using the Air Pack changes vs the old scenario ? If there is, might be nice to know how to see it. Any info would be appreciated

Thanks
Cab

Supposedly, both variants of each scenario will remain posted. We are just waiting for the Air Pack versions to get posted. I am going to keep the info separate as I am curious to know how planes actually impact the game. Plus, a scenario like Pegasus Bridge is completely different than the original. Hopefully people have held off on entering data, but I doubt I could be so lucky.
