Denver area BattleLoring? Sat, 14 July 2007 03:07
I didn't realise that there was such a Denver presence on these forums Very Happy Anyway, I'm about 50 miles north, in Loveland, but do manage to make it down to the big city every now and again.

I don't know that I'd be able to make it to a game day type thing until September at the earliest, but that shouldn't stop any one else from planning something before then, or at least get the talk going about doing something in the Fall.

So, anyone interested in doing something from some casual gaming to a more organised tournament type deal, just chime in Smile

Nothing formal here: my son and I plan on finding ourselves at Stonebridge Games this afternoon, playing some BattleLore. Feel free to pm me if interested.

I just purchased Battlelore at Attacktix (not sure on that spelling) which is off of old Hampden in Aurora. One of the guys that works there mentioned to me that they have a free board gaming night every Monday night.

That might be a good place to connect.

I make it to Attacktix every so often, this would work for me. I picked up my cope of Battlelore from there, as my usual haunt does not carry it.

I don't make it down to Attactix very often - but, wouldn't mind making an afternoon of it some weekend perhaps? We did have a HeroScape game day down there once, and it went very well - I expect the same would hold true for some BL Very Happy

Also, I was hoping to get to GenCon this year, but am not too surprised that I won't be...but, I was wondering if any from these boards were going to the Tacticon in Denver at the end of August/beginning of September? Lots of BattleLoring is scheduled Very Happy

I'm not sure what days (if any for that matter Laughing ) I'll be able to be down there - but if I knew when others might be there I would love to catch a game or three with you.

I've run stuff there for the last decade, but have been reluctant to go last two years. I'll be trying to make it for at least one day this year, strictly as a player.

It looks like I will be making it down to Tacticon later today, likely for the afternoon and evening. Hope to see some of you there - Caboose for sure Smile

Add me to the Denver area list. Attactix plays Days of Wonder (Battlelore included) and Fantasy Flight games on Monday nights (though I have not been to one of these game sessions). I have yet to play Battlelore, except in solo mode, and I own all of the expansions!

Todd - glad to see you. Did meet a few more Denverites who love to BL. Now we just need to set up some monthly thing to do BL. Hopefully maybe in the next month, since I'll be in and out (mostly out) the next month.

Gunmetal1986 - Welcome and maybe I'll try to head down to Attactix (basically about 3-4 blocks away) on Monday nights - ie. 9/10. Alas, I know, when it gets near January, that Mondays will be an issue, since "24" is on Monday nights and alas, can't miss Jack. Plus need to get my weekly dose of that lovely time theme music <G>

I looked for you all at Tacticon, but when I has hovering over the Battlelore players in the Boardgame room on Saturday afternoon, no one seemed to be from the forums.

Maybe next con, or Attactix. Just picked up the last two expasions from there last Wednesday.

Remember Todd the record is 1-0 in my favor...<evil snicker> (and for the record, I do believe my cavalry did it's usual ughness - but don't remember all gory details, but then we did play adventure #5 so not exactly a whole lot of excitment there!)

Gunmetal - what time do they usually start on Monday (roughly) ? Didn't see a time in your earlier post. So if I'm there and you are as well, we can hook up! Will definitely try to get down there Monday at Attactix..but also planning a vacation trip, so if I'm not there, that is why.

Everyone else in Denver -
Hopefully can get something done after I come back from my vacation later this month. I know we probably are all scattered about in town (I'm in Aurora)

Was planning something at Valhalla's store like on a Saturday afternoon/evening. Maybe like Sept 29th(Saturday) work for everyone ?

So, we're eschewing all prior Vassal results are we Wink That's okay, I'm a clean slate type Very Happy

I'm not one to disparage a victory of any sort, but I made two huge blunders that game - first, I bungled the greater portal, I don't know what mushrooms I ingested prior to pulling the switch that I did, but there were several options that would have been better choices than the one I made. Though an average dice roll would have been helpful there Laughing Second, I had it in my head that only 5 vp were needed so I played (what turned out to be) my last turn very different than I would have otherwise. I don't know if you caught my crosswise look at you when you started rolling on that red cavalry, but I thought you were pooring it on rather than grabbing that last vp Laughing

Anyway, next time no table talk from me Twisted Evil Wink

LOL - you not talking? That would be a first <smirk>

Sadly I played quite a few (or was involved quite a few games) so when we next meet, you will have to refresh my memory about your bungled attempts. And since I was at the convention for 3 days (okay 3 1/2), things become a blur after a while.

So now I know where I got the "5 VP were needed" in the next round of doing the BL - you started it and thus I told that to the next group of folks...luckily it was caught in time that 6 VP were needed (alas my stomach was growling..took another 35 mins to get that next VP!!)

Hopefully that last item should be enough for vengence upon me!

Man, I was standing next to you at the end of the table for 45 minutes, watching the demo in progress. I figured you were a DOW minion, and wouldn't want to hear from some forum geek.

If it starts at Noon or later on the 29th I can make it. I knew Tim and his gang pretty well, don't know the current owner at all, (Gary, is it?)

Re:Denver area BattleLoring? Tue, 25 September 2007 23:20
Well I've gotten back from my vacation, so I do plan to hopefully (am running a small cold at this time, but barring that) to plan to have something at Valhallas this Saturday.

I am open to doing it at other places, just that Valhalla, seemed to be central (plus a little easy to get to).

I got hold of Valhalla's and we can have some space at noon on Saturday. I had to give them a number and I said 10 people. Thus if we do have more than 10, I'll need to know so I can get the correct area for us.

Thus it would be nice to get some sort of rough head count of how many will show up this Saturday!

Here are the directions for Valhalla's (from their web site) :

Directions

* From West bound I-70
Exit Harlan St.
Turn *left* at stop sign, onto 48th St (westbound).
Turn left onto Harlan St. at the stop light.
Turn right on 44th Ave.
Go 1/2 block and Valhalla's is on the right, next to the Lakeside Academy.

* From East bound I-70
Exit Sheridan/Harlan.
Turn right onto Harlan at the stop light.
Turn right on 44th Ave.
Go 1/2 block and Valhalla's is on the right, next to the Lakeside Academy.

Well I got this all set up and other than 1 other person who showed up late (and he said he would be, based on his PM), there were others who DID NOT showed up.

It would have been nice to known if others weren't going to show up. It does take away time I could be doing other things as well.

I would be more than willing to try to do this again, but also be considerate of my time as well.

Thanks
Cab

Todd You know I'm always there (well most of the time!) doing demos of DoW with Sterling.

Also hopefully sometime in the next month or so, maybe form a group where we can play BL/M44 at some local place on a regular basis. I'm hoping for some place in the metro Denver area if possible but am flexible.

This time I will be in attendence as well. I signed up for 3 battleore events, i think.

Of course, since I haven't played it since October... someone will have to "refresh me" on it by wiping the board with my bloody body. . .

Zeal, great - obviously the more the merrier. No problem in reviewing game rules, etc. Just like riding a bicycle, they will come back to you! Smile

Hopefully sometime after the con, I'll be able to have some time to hopefully set up a regular day/time for a group of us to play. Thinking along the lines of maybe 1 or 2 days / month (weekend probably the more likely candidate). Thus if you have any ideas, etc, let me know at the con (which would be best since my mind is currently on other items and not BL Sad )

I know you two are still in the throes of Ghengiscon, but it was good to see you again Caboose, and to meet you Zeal, albeit briefly. Aside from teaching a couple of games yesterday morning, my plan of spending the day playing BattleLore morphed into a day among the dungeons of Descent.

It is quite possible that I've misconstrued relationships, but, Zeal, if you don't mind my saying publicly, your wife is very cool.

I may not run into you all until September at Tacticon - but I do plan on spending the better part of three days there, too. And, always open to getting together for some BL anytime between.

Thank you Todddrew, I think my wife is pretty cool too, and thank you for playing Descent with her. I met her over a game of Thundering Chariots, many moons ago. . .

I'm sorry that we didn't get a change to play Battlelore together, but after the ass-whooping I was handed TWICE by Caboose, I chose to retreat to other games.

I'll let him give you the exact after-action report if he chooses, but all of you here can appreciate the horror I experienced with this cardplay:

Caboose: Plays mounted charge, gets all his cav to the front of the lines, and damages a blue foot and some archers.

Zeal: Ha Ha! I play counter attack, and get a red cav to his a goblin unit pushed up against his other gob units. I FAIL to get a flag or kill them outright. They battle back and injure me.

Caboose: then plays counter attack to my counterattack and uses his cavs to hit me hard, killing 2 units, then following up and killing 2 more.

Zeal: I try to shore up the lines and manage to kill one of his units.

Caboose: then plays ANOTHER mounted charge (*sob*) against me, and kills two more units for the win, but wants to finish out the turn. His mounted follow ups pin and kill two additional units. That's 8 units lost in 4 turns folks. . .

And he had the third mounted charge in his hand! The HORROR!

That's about how I remember it. . .that about right?

Re:Denver area BattleLoring? Tue, 19 February 2008 17:14
Zeal, yes that is correct for one of the whoops. And this is all while playing scenario #6 with me having the goblins. So for those folks who say you cannot win with goblins...zeal, can now tell you otherwise.

Second whoop - I drew 3 mounted charges. So once I open the right flank side, the charges begin. I think that game was 6-1 (don't have my notes next to me).

Moral of story - Mounted charges should be respected and appreciated - more so when you do have 5 calvary units as well, even if 2 of them are goblins.

Todd - I saw you for that one event and then never again. Thought we were going to play out the Yahoo campaign?!?

Cab
p.s. Back to the main thread - I am still trying to do a group thing every month. I know Zeal is on the other side of the "mole hill" to the south and obvious probably wouldn't make it due to the distance, etc. But I will still try to make this my main mission.
