New Official DoW Scottish Wars adventure - From Game Trade magazine #95 Sun, 13 January 2008 04:41
Hey, I saw there was a new Game Trade magazine (#95) and on the front is stated "A Memoir 44 Scenario from Days of Wonder"

Well sadly no M44 scenario (Sorry M44 fans) but actually a Scottish Wars scenario by the name of Otterburn

If you want, I have the scenario listed in my list of adventures,
it is number 2975

I believe I got the mounted units correct (i.e. not Mounted Knights, but actual normal calvary). Since the editor doesn't have the Scottish unit icons, I had to use the blue A button to indicate the 2 Dwarvish Clan Chiefs, and that is noted in the scenario as well.

Looks like a pretty good adventure.

Here is the link to the scenario...

Of course, with the front of the magazine mentioning a M44 scenario, is that that a typo (and thus meant Battlelore) or was there suppose to a M44 scenario ? Just curious, since I presume it was suppose to say Battlelore, but can't hurt to ask.

Cab

No problem liwargamer, believe that all should have access to a scenario, namely official ones.

Hopefully the Battlelore scenario editor will be updated to include the Scottish War elements. Since the 5 official scenarios that came with the Scottish War expansion are up and thus include them. Obviously not a big issue but hopefully gets done when time permits.

And thus if Eric or whomever from DoW wants to use my scenario and include it as official scenario, they can. Just need to include the clan chiefs elements. Since that is really the only item I couldn't do. And therefore one doesn't have to redo the briefing typing, etc.

Cab,

What # does the scenario from the magazine get?

If you are referring to the scenario #, there is no # listed for the scenario in the magazine. And I have looked all over the page that lists it and other than the page # in the lower left corner, there is none. Which seemed odd since I would have thought there be some number, if it was numbered like GTM or something like that.
Just says "SCENARIO" in big blue letters in upper left corner.

If you are referring to the page # in the magazine, it is on page 14. Remember the cover lists it incorrectly as a Memoir 44 scenario.

With the scenario editor updated to include the Scottish War items, I updated the scenario this morning to add the necessary elements (namely the Clan Chiefs)

I just played this scenario, but it seems heavily weighted in favor of the dwarves. I was able to move my units around without much worry, while the pennant player was constantly jockeying his unit to maintain a supported position.

I'm curious if the red mounted units should be mounted knights. When we get a chance to play this one again, I think we will substitute in mounted knights either way.

Tsugo, sadly I haven't play it yet so cannot comment..will see if that might balance it and hopefully can report back this weekend on my findings, if any.

My assumption as well was that they must be mounted knights, as it only took a quick look to see how one-sided it seems.

It would be nice to hear some official word on this - or even better, see it posted in the official adventures... I'm guessing there's some exclusive contract with the magazine that prevents this?

I'm sure the red cavalry are Mounted Knights. All the Scottish Wars scenarios use the Knights, so this one would be no different.

Also, having recently played six games of Scottish Wars, having the Mounted Knights just might give the pennants player a chance. Not much of one, but a chance nonetheless.

Cab - Thanks for posting this adventure. It looks really different from the other official adventures. I'm looking forward to giving it a go.

I would agree. However, the symbol depicted is the one for the red calvary and not the mounted knight.

It can be difficult to tell the difference, but if you look at them side by side, you can see the horse and rider image on the mounted knight banner is slightly smaller than the red cav. Additionally, the mounted knight banner displays a lance as opposed to the red cav's long sword.

I do agree that change from red cavs to mounted knights only slightly improve the pennant player's chances.

If you're looking to print out the scenario with the mounted knights symbols, Game Trade magazine actually posted the scenario online:

Here's a link:

Too bad I didn't find this earlier - it would have cleared up the confusion immediately!

I second the thanks Richard. Also thanks to felkor for posting the link to the actual adventure. Looking at that map, you can clearly see that the red mounted units are mounted knights. As suggested earlier, that change will definitely bolster the English army, but I think the Scots will still win the battle.

Looking forward to trying this one again.

I played this adventure again today with the mounted knights. It was actually a fairly close match. The Scots did manage to take two victory points fairly early on, but I was able to take another two back. The Scots then took the lead 4 to 2, but again, I was able to capture two more banners. When it was 4 even, the dwarves were able to focus all their attacks on a unit that was down to one figure for the game.

In the end, it was my mounted knights that captured all the victory points.

Are we going to see this in the official adventures of the Battlelore site?
