Re:Have you tried BattleLore on VASSAL? Sat, 16 February 2008 22:32
I finally got on last night and played a quick game against a patient opponent (Sorry! can't remember your name but thanks)

Not only was it my first Vassal game, but my first BL game with another player, as opposed to solo. We did the 2nd scenario.

Things started going downhill for me on the first turn when my opponent drew "Darken the Skies" and continued to provoke me with his archers in the opening stages. I used a Blue Banner to mobilize my footies to his right flank, and it quickly degenerated into a fairly fierce melee. He bested me by using his cards to strategically withdraw weakened units before I could finish them off. I was proud that I was able to claim one banner near the end of the game and avoid the shutout.

Much fun was had.

Alright, someone else to get sick of playing me on Vassal Wink I've been playing a lot of Commands and Colors: Ancients due to the lack of people on the BL module lately - hope to see you on Smile

That was me that Kingbreaker played. It was a fun time and he played pretty well for a newbie. Smile

I can't say enough to those of you who aren't on Vassal yet that we could really use more players. If you get intimidated by the setup, just let myself or Toddrew know and we'll hook you up. Smile

The biggest problem is just timing. I have been on periodically most recently but no one else was so I found something else to do.

I am most likely available on Mondays and Wednesdays in the evening - like 7~9 central time.

I have been on a couple of times but without success. At first, I could not get the module to work. Now it works, but I can not get the extensions to work. I looked in on one of toddrew's games of C&C Ancients, but the forces were not correctly represented with the extensions not working properly. I am pretty sure I have them in the right folder as I have used both names mentioned in the help text for the extensions for both Battlelore and C&C Ancients on vassal. I think I can play the basic games, just not any add-ons.

Mike, have a look at this message to see if this will help getting the extensions to load :

You the man! I just extracted the folder and I believe that fixed my issue. I am going to attempt C&C Ancients now.

Thanks Cab!

Awesome again! C&C Ancients loaded everything to my knowledge as well. I popped in on a game that was starting up and the only weird thing was the text the two opponents were typing back and forth just showed up as a series of blocks. I am wondering if they were typing in a foreign font, that is not English? Thanks again for the help. Now perhaps I can play lonely toddrew in a game as he is always looking for an opponent to crush. Very Happy

I should be on this evening (in about 90 minutes or so), looking for opponents to crush Wink (and since it may not come through, that was 100% certified irony - due to the outcome of many games, I've been forced to become the most gracious of losers Very Happy )

As I'm in the UK and most players seem to be across the pond, I use VASSAL mainly as a PBEM facilitator, which it does excellently.

I currently use it mainly for Memoir '44, but would be happy to do some Battleloreing as well now I've absorbed the rules. I've got all the expansions except Scottish Dwarves and Hill Giant (anyone got a spare one? Smile

I play a lot of solo Battlelore as the card command system easily lends itself to that.

If anyone fancies Battlelore PBEM on Vassal please contact me.

If anyone is unsure on how to use Vassal, I made a Vassal primer for a friend using a game turn of the Memoir '44 module of Vassal if anyone wants a copy. It's not bells and whistles, but I my friend understood it ok.

Caboose: Come out, come out where ever you are! Sun, 02 March 2008 11:22
Very INAPPROPRIATE use of this forum, perhaps, but am getting to my wits' end... Apologies in advance.

So - as a part of the Uchronia campaign, I'm supposed to have a battle (representing France) against Caboose (representing England), but can't seem to reach him. So, Caboose, if you stumble upon this today, please read on...

Against all logic (I should be concentrating on other things besides playing today...), I will try and stay connected to Vassal today in an attempt to hook up with you and play this battle. If you can't make it, and I don't hear from you within a week, I'll look for someone else to play your part in the battle.

Looking forward to our fight...

Hi TOdd, what does the -1 -2 -6 to army mean in battle terms please.

For the Uchronia Hundred Years' War campaign, those designations for the armies refer to its "experience state", if you will. When you see a label like 4/-2, that means that the army's lore council level is 4, and that after its last battle, it ended up with a banner/victory differential of -2. In the campaign there is no way to increase the lore council level, though an army at +3 banner/victory differential of essentially does have an additional level attributed to the commander, as the number of command cards is increased by 1 (eg, a taking a level 2 commander with an army rated +3 or greater would give one a command hand of six cards). If an army has a negative rating of any kind it takes one fewer command cards. Additionally, for each point it is negative, up to three, after reserves are called, one unit is removed, each from a different section, for each negative number (again, up to three, a -3 army removes the same amount of units as a -6 army).

The game is weighted for armies to be destroyed quickly. Anytime an army with a negative rating loses, it is disbanded and removed from the board. When an army loses, its rating goes down by the banner differential of the loss (eg, if an army loses 5 banners to 7, its rating would go down 2 points). If an army wins, its rating only goes up 1 point, regardless of the banner differential.

Hope that wasn't too confusing of an explanation Wink Just pm me if you have any other questions. Players are dropping out and being added all the time - if you (or anyone else reading this) are interested, just get in touch with Yangtze.

Just to add my 2 cents...BattleLore on VASSAL is a LOT of fun. Ive had a couple of nailbiting games recently and the one I had last night was unbelievable. The only problem I see with this...not enough people...So c'mon ! check it out !

It was worth the BattleLore hangover I've had all day from staying up to see that one through to its finish. After it was over, I couldn't sleep and read a book cover to cover before finally dropping off Confused

I like Commands and Colors: Ancients a lot, but it's games like those (which happen quite frequently, I might add) where the endgame turns are so rife with possibilities (I just stopped worrying when you broke the 20 lore barrier Laughing ) that one has to account for, and then the tension of the resulting dice rolls plays out...well sir, I like it, makes BL my preferred C&C game.

VASSAL Campaign - Player Needed! Thu, 13 March 2008 18:18
Thomas has, with regret, had to step down from the throne of England in the Uchronian Hundred Years' War campaign. We are therefore now actively seeking a player to take on the English crown in this game.

Please let me know asap if you would like to take part - you already have a battle to fight!
