Re:New information on expansion. True? Tue, 12 August 2008 12:27
I've posted about this before, but I think it could be relevant here as well.

I would really like to see:

- a big expansion every 6-8 months. This could either be an army box for a race or a game system expansion like 'Heroes'.
- a small expansion between the big expansions. This could either be a blister with a creature or a blister with some special units.

Now we know about the troll, the small expansions could be something like that: a monster with a map which has 2 scenarios and the rules printed on it. A simple army extension of 4 units could be handled the same way.

The big expansion will be the 'brother' to the small expansion before it. The big expansion will for instance be an army box with a slot for the previously released monster and, besides the army itself, contain (revised) summary cards, rules and scenarios for the monster.

This way, we won't have to wait too long before we get new creatures or units, we can play with them immediately and any faq's about them could immediately be answered in the rules of the big expansion. Because the big expansion has the summary cards, scenarios, the rules and the storage space for the smaller expansion, it will also notify the buyer of the smaller expansion and gives the buyer the opportunity to determine if he will like the smaller expansion.

This solution would make it easier for DoW to develop the expansions on a regular basis and a quick pace, without making the rules a jumbled mess.

I think this solution would also suit almost every type of player:

- The 'addict' doesn't have to wait long before something new comes out.
- The 'completist' would buy all expansions anyway, but now also has a more compact storage solution.
- The 'customizer' can buy only the expansions that appeal to him and can now make a more educated guess as to which small expansions to buy.
- The 'budget player' could buy only the smaller expansions.

I would like to know what they are planning to do with the rest of the expansions and I hope it looks something like this. Because if their only plan is to release new monsters with paper maps I believe they are going to hit a dead end.

DoW: please let us know about you plans besides these monsters! I don't care if you're 100% certain about everything or if you cannot give release dates yet. I'd just like to know if I have been waiting a year for almost nothing.

The issue is the availablity of the Troll and the scenarios. Everyone would be fine with it if they could get the Troll directly and the scenarios from DoW (online) for $10 or something. Just a Troll, a Hex tile, a card, and a link to the scenario online.

As it stands right now the completist (like myself and many others) has to get a paper map he doesn't want and pay $18 to get the Troll and scenarios. Not good.

That's the solution to the problem if DoW is listening: Allow us to buy the Troll and associated terrain (if any) for $10 from DoW.

That doesn't solve the problem of the lack of a "serious" expansion, but I'm sure that's coming with Heroes...

I've waited this long for a Troll and a paper map ?? $18 bucks for a paper map, no cards and two adventures ?? NO THANKS. I'll wait another year or so ?? for the Heros or Armies to come out. This exp. sucks. Is Days of Wonder turning in to Games Workshop ??

I was super excited when I first saw this thread. But now after reading all the replies I feel like a little kid who just lost his favorite toy.

A lot of games have learn to play type sets or similar easy play expansions. I think the idea of easing set up time and simplifying things for new players is a good idea.

Do we know for sure all this expansion includes is a paper map and a Troll figure? IF that is all we get for our 18$ then I think that sucks monkey bums and I will have to pass. But if it includes some of the other figures needed for the troll scenarios or some other goodies then I will pick it up.

Either way, the lack of information is killing this game...

But let's face it: Picking Terrain tiles isn't the setup issue. It's all the little figures and this product doesn't solve that problem.

Days of Wonder.
When Battlelore was released you had me at hello.I read the pre-hype and fell in love with you.You weren't just selling a game, you were selling an idea.I bought into that idea.I jumped through every ring and managed to snag a couple of Giants and an Elemental.I loved it.I loved everything that you promised.I loved the blister pack idea, and everything about this new game.
I liked the game when it was finally released, not quite a polished jewel, but, maybe it could be- after a little love and affection given by a company that seemed to have a license to print money.I loved the support and the atmosphere of these forums and the blogs, so my hopes were high that things would go as you said.
You invited me to relive "Your initial discovery of the seductive world of fantasy...",and evoked memories of "wondrous stories that magically emerged from the nooks and crannies of my bed covers..."(Battlelore Player's Guide pg.2)Pretty heady stuff and I believed it.It didn't happen from the get-go,but I was willing to wait for you and maybe the system would grow into the game you promised.Where are we today?
Now, I admit,I may be slightly left of center, but,my initial discovery of fantasy didn't involve Goblins on Ostriches and I know there were no Dwarves riding Moo-Cows in any of the nooks and crannies of my bed covers.
What the hell happened? I weathered the unbalanced card storms, and the lack of any news ,and the misprints, and the faded dice with relative ease.I was willing to wait for the game that YOU promised from the beginning.
Now,after the lackluster releases and the broken promises, and now the "It'll be done when it's done" mentality, how do you honestly think any of us are going to react to an $18 troll with a paper-napkin map, only good for wiping our tears with?
This game is absolutely not going in the direction that brought me on board.I know, you don't owe me anything more, you got my money already, but,I can't shake the desire and hopes that I had for this game. Nothing else has caught me like the idea of the game that you set out to make. You could have had the number to my checking account, based on what you initially promised.I would have followed you into Perdition.
Now,you ask me to be patient and keep the faith and buy paper parts to an already expensive game? I think I'm going elsewhere with my cash.Theres a bunch of other paper products that deserve my attention.
Just my opinions, not that they seem to matter, feel free to disregard...

Re:New information on expansion. True? Wed, 13 August 2008 02:36
i've been lurking these forums since before i got my copy of battlelore, i've read almost every single review of battlelore, almost every thread they have on BGG, and a lot of the history on these forums is not lost on me, and i guess im a little sad.

im sad because the people on these forums really really really love battlelore, as do i. i suppose it's because they expected so much of the game system, as was promised by DoW. i'm sad because they're slowly falling out of love.

i have no idea what retailers want, seeing as how they didn't like the blister pack idea for the monsters, but what i am sure of, is that very few of the customers prefer the new way of getting creatures.

havent seen anybody who thinks the epic adventure map series is a great new direction for DoW. it's not what people expected, and it isn't a particularly pleasant surprise at that. it's like asking your mom what's for dinner when you're 7, and she answers pepperoni pizza, and when you get to the table, it's liver and onions.

what really really gets me though is that this expansions is NOT an expansion. how can it expand the base game and the previous expansions when you CANT use parts of them to play it?

i'm talking about the board and the hexes. it's a new map, and then you can't use the map you already have to play it? the terrain is pre-printed, so what about the hexes i already have? it's designed for play at conventions? so why are they selling it to people who already have the game and play at home?

look at it from my point of view. if a new guy wants to get into battlelore and buys the base game. is he going to buy this new expansion? well, if he doesnt have epic, this is his chance to get into some epic gaming. but wait. half of the package needs marauders and battalion to work. so he'll probably buy those two first. or maybe he'll ask a few friends if it's worth it. and who is he going to ask? the battlelore fanatics.

the battlelore fanatics? what are they going to say about this expansion? read a few threads and find out. we are all confused at this new direction DoW is taking.

the only good thing that has come out of this, was eric's comment about the heroes expansion, and that it is still coming.

please eric, prove us all wrong.

With no offense meant towards you, this is not enough for most of us. Heroes were mentioned in the base game when it was released in 2006. Heroes was supposed to be released by the end of 2007. Then previews popped up in early 2008 and here we are almost another year later with nothing.

Granted, we tell DOW on the one hand that we want some timeline and then we complain when that wasn't met. But there is no info getting out whatsoever. I don't know if it was confirmed or hinted at but it was said that DOW had a lot going on while wrapping up 2007. That was info; that was understandable. No one really got upset that it was pushed off. Withe early '08 previews it seemd that Heroes were just around the corner. But then nothing for the last 7 months. What the heck happened?

Production issues? design issues? Some major flaw discovered in playtesting? OK, no worries IF you let us know. But what has come up? We have seen nothing for M44. Nothing really for TTR except a card game. Nothing new. And then we see...Paper maps!!! This is what was so importnat that it took 7 months to release?

It just doesn't cut it anymore.

Soooo we are supposed to pay $18 for one plastic unpainted figure and a paper printed map??? wow...what is happening to DOW. I have been a loyal fan for a while and have many of their games but this is just sad. I, like many others here, bought into this game from the beginning. And as others have stated here were are years later and where are the heroes, where are the more (reasonably priced!) creatures with their summary cards...

DOW, a while back you decided to talk to retailers about what they wanted and changed your plans instead of talking to the customers on what THEY wanted. Seems to me ever since that turning point a lot of people have been rather disappointed. If this is where Battlelore is headed I will not be being buying any further products. Sad

Exactly! I work in software development and this has been my experience as well. A client is going to be pissed if you project a timeline of 6 months, don't show some progress between those six months and in the end notify him of a delay of 2 weeks. This will even happen if you have been working extremely hard to make the product go well and if the delay has nothing to do with you. On the other hand, if you demonstrate the progress made to the customer every month and discuss/tackle the problems you encountered with them, they seem to be able to cope with a delay of a month without getting angry. Why is this? It's because they see your progress, it's because they understand the problems you faced and because they see the product will be better for it at the end.

That is what is missing here. We simply are not shown what is in the works and we don't see any progress being made and thus we form our own conclusions. I know we can never have the same control that the customer in the example has (partly because we as a group cannot be defined as one single customer), but I personally don't care as much about a timeline for releases. Just tell me your plans, show me what is being done and get me enthousiastic about BattleLore again.

Yes, you are going to get negative responses this way if an exiting project is shifted in a different direction or exceeds projected timelines (especially if it is because of another game). I'm sure those reactions can be quite painful. But if these reactions to the Troll have shown you anything, you will get them in the end as well. Keeping everything a secret is not helping the situation, it is in fact hurting it.

Thanks for at least acknowledging this thread. I for one was waiting on a reaction, even though I knew you were at GenCon and you're probably busy. For me, this helps. Now I know you will respond to us with more information. I will wait till you provide more context before I will post anything new on the troll again.

another battlelore lurker here - admittedly, I haven't had a chance to play battlelore in over 6 months, but I regularly check back on these forums, hoping for a killer expansion that will re-invigorate my initial love for the game. Sad to say, I'm in agreeance with most of the posters here, and I'm really disappointed with this latest news Sad

I understand.

A message needs to be sent and I am prepared to boycott these latest releases as well. But then there is a tugging that I am missing something I would like to have as well (the troll). But I don't want it at this price and in this form (even setting aside the map - there is no reference cards and no creature lair). I hope the community solidifies on this one and can stand by their intent.

I would definitely advise people to make no preorders until DoW has returned from GenCon, to tell us exactly what is going on and what their vision on the game is.
But let's wait for a response from Eric before talking boycott.
While a lot of us are currently disappointed or frustrated over a lot of issues, I believe we will see some kind of resolution in the coming week or two.
I have personally no more to add to this discussion, until an official statement hits the boards. But that is not to say that other posters should not make their opinions heard.
I will now try to sit back, think positively, and wait for official words.

Happy gaming, everyone.

Agreed. Which is why I stated I was "prepared" to boycott. Eric wrote me yesterday stating he would respond to my open letter in about a week.

I would like to hear what DOW has to say but I don't see them changing my mind on the $18 paper maps. They will mostly just calm my fears about the future.

When CTA came out with the wrong deck backs, DOW retracted and finally fixed the error. They were adament they made no mistake with the TTR:Swizterland cards either and finally replaced those as well. So I am still hopefully something good will come of this.

Glad to see that Eric will be rsponding,
I trust this time it will include some "real information
& not just the "we're looking into that".

I think us BL fans deserve to know at this point
what is planned for this game in some detail.

Being Hopeful Very Happy

Well I would agree in regards to Switzerland cards that it was a bad move to try a new printer and find out they had obviously used very poor quality of stock for the tickets. At least DoW was willing to fix it and thus save face. Can't blame a company for trying new things/ideas/issues to try to cut costs and then find out it didn't work as planned due to poor quality of stock paper used.

my wife just got back from GenCon (I had to work), and she swung by the DoW booth. While they appeared to be demoing BL (she wasn't sure if they had a troll out or not), they certainly didn't have any copies of Troll & Country for sale. I won't be able to make it until Saturday, but I'll try to find out more then.

Here are the stats from that page, in case people are too lazy to open another window :

Quote:

Deploys on the field
Ordered normally (as a blue unit), or pay 1 lore to move out of section
Move 1 and attack or 2 and no attack
Retreat: must ignore one flag, all others retreat 2 spaces and trample
Weapon: I do not remember the name, but it is melee only
Damage: 6d
Could not see if bonus strikes, but I would imagine it does
Ignores critical hits
Gives support but can not be supported

Here are my thought/questions/comments on the Troll with this info (assuming it is true)

1) Out of section issue : Definitely seems odd that the Troll has to only pay 1 lore for being out of section vs the other creatures. Would be interesting to know (assuming that wasn't a typo) why that is the case. Since on page 41 of the BL rule book states for creatures (not spider) that out of section creatures pay 3 lore.

2) 6D - OUCH. That will usually probably guarantee 1 lore and 1 hit. And thus regenerate one hit back. Thus if you do attack it, you better put your best unit and hope for 2 hits. Or hope for no lore on it's battleback attack. Definitely would have 2 units attack the Troll for sure (and make sure they have a way
to retreat!). Of course, those archers could maybe do some damage (but with the way my archers roll, they couldn't hit a paper bag at 5 feet away!)

3) Bonus strikes - With the Troll having 6D, I sure hope the bonus strikes don't hit (or cause any other nasty) since it does have 6D (which is 2 dice more than any Red unit troop has). Otherwise there will be probably 2 hits / dice roll, based on averages.

4) Regen / Critical hits - Definitely gotta like that mechanism. People knew that Trolls regenerate and thus I like how they handle that mechanism. As for it having 2 hit points, it might seem a tad weak, but then the # of dice it gets to roll in melee definitely makes up for that "weakness". And people will like the fact of not having to roll that 2nd dice roll to see if it "kills" the creature or not. But as mentioned above, definitely will probably take more than 1 unit to kill it (may it be via archer support or another melee unit).
- In regards to the regen lore tokens, if there is a real low pile of lore tokens, do these tokens actually reduce the total # of lore available OR can there be other tokens used to indicate it's hit points ?
- In regards to the token's used, is there a nice way of storing the 2 tokens on the unit in some way??

5) Banner color - Now we see why it is blue vs being a red - although the dice sure make it look like a Red unit creature. Thus it can move 1 and attack or 2 and not attack.

6) In regards to fire type spells (which based on lore of trolls, that trolls cannot regenerate), is there anything about that aspect for trolls ? I doubt there is, since I suspect they want the Troll to be a fairly easy creature to use without getting into nitpicks of other issues..but would be curious if there is anything about fire (as in the stuff you get from a match, not the "fire" you get from a volley of arrows <G>)

Overall, I think this creature (once it is out in mass - and not talking about how it is being released - don't need to open those wounds) probably be #1 or #2 in most people's book due to the # of dice.

I am convinced of the error of my ways. After reading the thoughts of others and seeing what is being offered, I must admit I am not pleased with the change in direction either.

The griping pushed me over the edge but that is overshadowed but the rudderless ship we now have in DOW.

So I apologize to my fellow posters. I am back in the disgruntled camp myself.

Welcome back ColtsFan! I saved you a stump by the fire to grumble on...

Very Happy

While I just now mainly lurk on this forum anymore because I have nothing useful to say, I am of two minds on this. One, I really dislike the direction this game line has taken, and two, I HATE myself for loving this game so much that I actually care.

Along with many of you, I've been gaming for decades now, and I've seen games come and go, and them's the brakes in our chosen hobby...but this one seemed special, and so full of promise...it seemed to be the game I always wanted but didn't know it.

And 2 years later, it seems like that bright hope teeters on the edge of another discontinued line.

Really DOW, has no one really been working on the game world? Do you need folks to write content to flesh it out, what? I belong to several forums on similar sites (and various aliases Cool )
and while complainers and tear-down artists are a dime a dozen, I have never read posts from such dedicated fans pleading with the near-faceless powers-that-be to just include them a bit. This "tell them nothing" additude seemed like mystique in the beginning, but now I REALLY feel that this is because there is nothing to tell...

Prove me wrong. I implore you.

Caboose, I'm pretty sure the troll has 3 hp. It gets two lore tokens (hit points) on itself which are removed when it is damaged. Then, if it gets hit w/o a hit point marker on it, it dies. That's the way I interpreted it at least, though I could easily be wrong.

I was the one who posted on BoardGameGeek, and have edited that post substantially after I was able to check it out again. It takes 3 lore to move out of section (the font was difficult to see and they crammed so much information on the card that it looked like a 1 until I got about 8 inches away. Also, it does not get bonus strikes. The lore you use for its hit points do not come from your pool, they are just extra ones used for accounting the hit points.
