I can't say all is right again but it is headed back in the right direction. Looking forward to this expansion. For the first time since the Air Pack, I am excited about a DOW product.

So, how does the scenario numbering work? It doesn't follow the original numbering, and I can't figure out how the bottom numbers (4245, 1324, etc) work or what they mean.

As for a few questions about the rulebook (might as well start now):

On page 7, it says "all Italian Artillery units may ignore 1 flag rolled against them." Does this combine with terrain rules (may ignore 2 flags in a bunker) or not (like for battle dice reductions for a bunker on a hill)?

Page 13 (scenario 1) says "Exit markers are in effect on the portion of the Allied baseline in between the 2 Exit markers, for the Axis forces.", Axis and Allies should be switched in the description.

Looks fantastic, I can hardly wait.

1 question: Why no Air Pack Rules?

I am guessing it has to do with the fact that Air Power wasn't a major factor in the desert war until later on.

Game On!

Excellent, at last. Always like the Crusader tank. I do have a question though. The Crusader had many faults but the one redeeming feature that all recognised (Axis and Allies) was that it was exceptionally fast. So why do most of the scenarios have the Allies only able to move tanks 2 spaces? What is the thinking behind that? I could have udnerstood if it could move 3 (or even 4) but only battle with 2 dice as it was seriously undergunned

Sorry to be a pain in the derrier, but the Crusader had only 5 bogie wheels each side, not the 6 shown on the model on shown on the website.

Maybe it will go faster with 6 Very Happy

And as another poster said, it looks like a turtle helmet from later in the war, not the Mke 2 brimmed model.

Not in the official rules. It says when the last figure is destroyed, the weapon is removed but doesn't add to the medal count. You can make it a house rule though! It could be interesting if either side was allowed to pick it back up! Rolling Eyes

And maybe to signify how effective they were at close range, a +1 die in close assault against tanks.

Imagine a tank coming up against a cmoflaged PIAT in a building, and getting hit with a 4d ambush! Very Happy Very Happy

I thought we'd finally see Heroic Leader used in North African scenarios. What gives? That rule seemed tailor made for Rommel.

Id like to share a couple of comments with DOW crew on the rules about italians:

On page 3 Italian Royal Army is translated into "Esercito Italiano" but it should be better written "Regio Esercito Italiano" but the official name, "Esercito italiano" is still valid since its law approval on 4 may 1861. However in the documents till 1946 among the army it was referenced as "Regio Esercito italiano" (since it has always been devoted to the king till 1946).

On page 2 italian badge shows use of italian flag as the one from the republic. Im not familiar with military badges and the use of them by memoir 44 developers but the flag to be used should be the Royal Army Flag instead, which has the Savoia Shield in the center:

http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regio_Esercito

We werent a republic during the war Very Happy For me it looks like italians are fighting in Iraq in modern days, not in North Africa in 1942! so please...

change Esercito Italiano to Regio Esercito Italiano and replace those badges with italian royal army flag Smile

As I see it, such things can usually be explained as leadership issues. So, due to poor leadership, although the tank itself is capable of greater mobility, it moves less effectively than its German counterparts. Also, British use of tanks was dogged by an infantry support doctrine. It took them a long time to learn the lessons of blitzkrieg.

Just put in a 2 copy pre-order with my local store.
Can't wait for it to arrive. Probably just before Christmas. (it is a small independent who relies of getting stock from a distributor)

Re:Mediterranean Theater Expansion - New for Memoir '44 Wed, 03 September 2008 20:49
Yes I thought about that. I thought it might be some kind of Rommel effect

But in M44 aren't we the leaders, trying our hand at seeing whether or not we can do a better job than Rommel or Monty?
And I do take some of the point about the tanks being tied to infantry, although that was disappearing soon after Monty got there. In any case that was never the role of Cruiser tanks like the Crusader, more for the Matilda or Churchill. And the Blitz rules are there to simulate the different usage of tanks in any case.

The biggest arguement is that it is just a model of a Crusader meant to simulate the various tanks (Matilda, Crusader, Lee, Sherman, Churchill) that were used in the desert, and therefore should not have any speed advantage. But in that case why give the Brit tanks the disadvantage, as some of these were a match at some level for the PzIII and PzIV?

Not saying its wrong, just interested in the thinking, because usually DoW have got the nuances just right.

I'd also still love to know why its got 6 wheels instead of 5! Smile

A shame there are no Italian miniatures. Despite all the claims of the Italians mot being so worthless and cowardly after all, they still didn't seem to merit their own figurines...I would've prefered those to the AT guns, that is, Italian army miniatures and AT gun BADGES ( would've been in line with earlier expansions having mobile artillery etc. represented by badges...)

Well, maybe we'll see some Italians ( and French) in a future expansion!
