Organized Play Program Thu, 30 October 2008 15:27
In case you haven't seen the most recent press release, DoW is starting the Organized Play Program!

http://blog.daysofwonder.com/?p=869&language=en

It looks interesting and I think it'll be a great way to get new people playing the game! Smile The organizer of each club or event gets to keep one of the two Overlord maps, so I'm trying to figure out if there's a catch with this. I guess the only catch would be if you don't like free stuff or you can't find enough people to play with you! Very Happy

Good idea Days of Wonder!

I think you are overlooking the fact that you have to pay for the pack in the first place.

True. For those curious about it, the price for this kit is $ 18 / 16 euros - but you have to abide by the terms of the agreement, ie organize an event, run it, do an AAR, etc... that is where the "catch" is, if you want.

No, I hadn't overlooked the fact that you have to buy the pack in the first place. I was assuming that anyone running the club would ask the players to pay something like $2 each with the knowledge that the winner would get to keep the board.

Now you might be wondering how you decide on a single winner when you're playing an Overlord battle, and I would have to admit...I'll have to think about it. Rolling Eyes Maybe it could be the player who eliminates the most figures (although that means the Commander-in-Chief wouldn't have a chance to win).

The idea though, is that everyone pitches in and buys the set together ($18 split between a whole playing group isn't bad). I like it.

Could there be a page for teams looking for other teams, where they are, and how far they would be willing to go to meet another team? I can't really tell where people are (and how to get a team together) by the registered player list. I and 3 friends have been trying to get others into M44 so that we could play overlord, but it has not worked. The thing is, none of the other 3 have DoW accounts, so they don't show up on the player list. I bet there are plenty of other cases like this, maybe even some in my area!

This page could have things like:
-Team (Name)
-Location
-How Far they are willing to go for a Battle
-What registered players
-Wins/Losses
-What Maps they have played/Play most often

That's an interesting idea Zasdert. I like it. Smile

I may have said this before, but I would rather have DoW work on a PC version of the game or other expansions than a project like this, but I think this idea might be something we could do on our own! Very Happy If someone had the knowledge and time, they could create a simple web page that allows anyone to post their information (like you suggested) for other players to see. Cool

The other option isn't as effective...Zasdert could just stand on a street corner with a sandwich sign that says "If you want to play Memoir '44, call ____" or something like that. Who knows, if you choose the right corner it could work!! Twisted Evil Laughing

I'm on a Mac too! I'm really, really hoping that when the game finally comes out, it'll work for both! (Hint, hint, DoW) Very Happy

So, anyone out there with the ability and time to create a Memoir '44 database website? Rolling Eyes

MAC's Unite!! Very Happy Very Happy

If there are a lot of us, I imagine DoW will work on a mod so the game works for Mac's too. We might have to wait a little longer Crying or Very Sad but as Mac users, we're pretty much used to that! Rolling Eyes

...don`t think so. Yann is using mac as well, as he mentioned before. And actually the user pages are designed to house the organized play program AND the computer version:

2 - beginning to put in place the tools we`ll need to run our Organized Play programs, later this summer.

Memoir 44 Organized Play programs will be team based, centered around quarterly events in Overlord and Breakthrough format and make good use of your User Pages.

I can`t wait for the computer version ! I have to admit that I am seriously addicted in daily checking the DOW-site for reading something new about that project. and that`s sad..

First, remember DoW doesn't have a lot of resources. Second, Yann is in charge (I do believe ) of doing most of the Web based items whereas Brice is in charge of computer programming. So it could be possible that Yann might be able to do it, assuming one asks him nicely and he can do it in a timely manner.

Just my 2 cents worth (well it was worth 2 cents 1 month ago before the stock market crash! <G>)

Fellow Memoir '44 players, I need your help.

I'm in the process of writing a grant to get funds so I can start an after-school history club that revolves around Memoir '44. I will open the club to 4th and 5th grade students at my school and I expect that most of the kids interested in the club will have already learned the game from being in my class in 3rd Grade. Smile Because most of them will already know the basic rules, we'll be able to focus on teaching some of the expansions and learning about the history behind the game.

Here's where you guys come in! Very Happy I have a few things I need help with:

1. I want to find a catchy name to create interest in the club. It might have something to do with Memoir, Days of Wonder, history, etc. Here are my ideas so far...and boy, they sure are original: Memoir Club, History Board Game Club, Days of Wonder Club. Help!! Laughing

2. I'll need to create a web page for the students to check where I can include running torunament results, updated information on meeting times, updates, winners, etc. Does anyone know of a good (easy to use) web page system that's cheap (free) where I could post that info?

3. Through the club, students will have to research a battle and create a scenario. They will have to write their own Historical Background based on their research and make the map. Does anyone know of some simple web sites that outline World War II battles? It would also be great if maps were included in the web site.

Thanks for all the help and support, everyone! Cool

I like the name!! Very Happy "Experience History Now" or "Survive the Past in the Present" could be our rally cry! Laughing

Does your school have a website? You could create a page specifically for this club. I know of many schools that have websites, and then each member of the faculty can have their own page (or groups of pages) for resources, schedules, homework, and announcements. You could create a special page for this club.

Keep the names coming! These are great ideas.

My school doesn't have an official web site, but if/when we do get one, that would be a perfect place to put the club! I'll have to look around and see what web program I can use until that happens.

Randwulf, at this point it isn't feasable to introduce Battle Cry and Ancients. The grant has to be used for US history, which limits things to Memoir and Battle Cry, and for elementary students the more recent (and more familiar, since they've been in my class) war is World War II. If I ever move up and start teaching older kids I would look into introducing those games...especially since the rules don't change all that much!

How about "Historical gamers group" or "History in Miniature", or "History through games club"? Check through your ISP. Many ISP's (Internet Service Provider) have an easy to use web page creator, and will host it for free for their customers. I know Earthlink used to do this. Print Shop used to have an easy to use web page maker, (my version is old, so I don't know if the new versions have it). I sometimes go to events held by the "Missouri Historical Gamers Alliance", so you could use, (name of school) Historical Gamers Alliance.

Oh, I'm doing this! Been on a real M44 kick lately, and a renewed friend is really interested in Hedgerow Hell/Cadets. I played side-by-side scenarios Tuesday, with Po Valley on the left, Suomussalmi on the right! I could set up two more maps, and the Overlord map, but I might haveta borrow some soldiers!

Have you looked at the Ticket to Ride community pages - namely the tourny section. I know there are some people there that run tournies using web based software. Sadly I'm drawing a blank on who does them most (erg? - name doesn't sound correct)

Hello Rasmussen81,

I don't know if I can help you and your students, but I am working hard to give a quick translation of all my scenarii that are in the SFTF. At that time, about 50 or 60 are ready and I think that I will finish to translate the whole at the end of the year. I hope that these succincts translations permit to all anglophon M-44 players to have fun with these scenarii. You know that all my scenarii are based on historical facts so maybe it will be good for your students to see that World War 2 is so diverse and composed by so many battles and not only by El Alamein, Stalingrad or Omaha Beach. I like History and my hope is that playing these scenarii give to the students (and the francophon students as the same) big interest in the History of the WW2 and in the History in general. So, that's my contribution for the promotion of History. And I am really pleased to know that you promote History to your students with "Memoir 44".

Friendly, Smile
Jdrommel.

Thanks for the update on what you're working on jdrommel. I won't be starting the club until the start of next school year (September 2009) so you have lots of time to translate the battles. When we're looking around for good historic battles to play, I'll look over the ones you have and use some of them! Thanks for the translation work on those. Very Happy
