New Terrain Pack? Sun, 26 April 2009 20:16
I think that there should be a new expansion with a lot of new terrain tiles. This is necessary because some tiles are winter only, desert only, pacific only or just 'normal'. For example, city ruins are only included as winter tiles in the Eastern Front but when I want to replay another battle in which a city is devastated (Berlin for example) and it is summer and I use the normal board, I have to use Winter City ruins.

This gives a bad visual effect. Crying or Very Sad

I think that it would be nice if we could include all kinds of these most used tiles in all formats. This would mean that you could use desert and winter on one tile (front and back) and for example normal and pacific on another tile. You could use this for:

- buildings e.g. winter fortress, winter station etc.
- terrain
- water (frozen lakes, more wadis, inundations (floodings))
- ...

Not only extra terrain tiles would be useful but also more badges of the already known types so that you could have more Polish troops, Yugoslav Partisans etc. And new ones, for example British/Japanese/American snipers etc. Smile

The last thing included could be a new deck of cards (but these can be ordered seperately so that would not be a problem) and dice as well (I heard some people having trouble with them in wearing down) so that you won't have to buy any base game or Overlord expansion... Cool

Anyway I do not know if DoW is working on another expansion yet but this would be my preference and probably of some more players here. Do you agree, members? DoW are you working on something like this? (Otherwise just receive it as advice/suggestion Very Happy )

I'm still holding out for a breakout map with an island in the center and ocean around. As I've said many times, it could come with more ships, and different kinds of ships. This way, the beach could be "softened up" before the landing. but I think that Japanese units in caves should get a modifier for arty and ship fire. Ships fired on Iwo Jima for three days, after the air force dropped 5,800 bombs on it in 2,700 sorties, and through all that the defensive installations grew from 450 major defensive installations to 750. Obviously the bombardment had little effect on Japanese soldiers dug into caves.

I think that ships would be nice but as already mentioned: the ships do not have real effect on dug in soldiers, especially in the Pacific. Therefore, I think that or ships should be launched in a completely different game with miniatures but not with Memoir '44, which is focused on ground battle...

But what do you think of the new Terrain Pack idea?

Well, we had an air pack expansion that doesn't have anything specific to do with the ground battle! Sure they strafe and bomb, but then this becomes not just a ground battle! Hey what do you think those ships did for three days sitting just off of Iwo Jima? They bombarded the island. And the airplanes that flew 2,700 sorties? They bombed the crap out of that island. All I'm asking for is the chance to do the same!

I hate to bring this up...again Laughing ...but what does the poor Japanese player do while you're bombing and bombarding the crap out of him (or her)? Do they just go out to get some coffee? Rolling Eyes

This is where I think that a Japanese Infantry unit in a cave hex should get cover from artillery, ships, and bombing and strafing. We flew all those sorties, spent the biggest part of three days bombarding the island with naval fire, and still there were 22,000 of them because they were safely in their caves. In the present rules, they do not get a modifier for artillery, ships, or strafing and bombing. I also think that units in a hardened bunker should also get a modifier. That's why they are hardened bunkers.

If my memory of my readings is correct. those bombarding ships and planes had little actual effect on the dug in Japanese for a whole host of reasons from they couldn't spot the caves/fortifications to the works were built to withstand just what they got. Where they had a significant effect was when the Japanese came out in the open, but that was rare and usually at night when aircraft couldn't fly, and at the extreme tactical level, such as napalming a specific position identified and marked by ground troops. The Marine air was particularly good at this, specifically training for it. So, you could include the ships for bombardment, but the modifiers you'd have to have to moderate their effect should be pretty hefty.

I agree RonB. I agree totally, and I also think that hardened bunkers should get a modifier. I treated hardened bunkers differently in my air rules (available from my user page) I think I'll do the same for infantry in caves.
