Tigers in the Snow... Very Fun Thu, 21 May 2009 23:22
I just finished my first battle for Tigers in the Snow. It was also my first battle on the official Days of Wonder Overlord Maps as I purchased both of them (and more Russians!) at the same time and they all showed up the same day!

The Soviets ended up defeating the Germans 13-11 in a battle that had several enormous momentum shifts. I am looking forward to playing it again.

PS - Thanks for all the answers to my questions in the forums of late. I have had and played Memoir 44 for a long time, but had taken a fairly long break from it. It is good to be back.

Glad you enjoyed the scenario!

I am waiting for mine to arrive in the mail.

How did the Tiger tanks do?
Were they involved alot in the battle?

I ended up doing an AAR for the battle. It was the first one I have done so I apologize if I was a little wordy. Embarassed

In terms of the Tigers, I don't know if the battle as it unfolded was a great example of their use. My opponent got 3 of 4 of them bogged down on one flank trying to root out infantry and artillery, which I felt wasn't the best use for them. It is a temptation the way the battlefield is set up, but there is little motivation on that flank for the Soviets to push forward out of cover. I would've liked to see the Tigers push more towards the center where a majority of the action was.

From a gameplay/psychological standpoint, I think the Tigers are pretty effective. They are a tempting target because one hit finishes them. My strategy against them was basically 'Go big or go home!'. If I could hit them with 3 dice, I would take the chance. That being said, there is nothing more demoralizing than rolling two or 3 hits in a roll, only to get no grenades on the follow-up, which I am sure is exactly the intended effect. Sure, there aren't many Tigers out there... but if you don't hit 'em just right.......

I am looking forward to switching sides and seeing if I can utilize them a little better.

Where did you post the AAR? I did not see this scenario in the official DOW scenario list.

All four scenarios from the battle map can be found in the scenario list as classified scenario.
Just sort them by "Last Edit" and they will be listed first.

Skillelea, nice AAR! Now really looking forward to playing!

Found it. Thank you.

Yes, Skillelea, good job of reporting that battle. I posted mine. They are shorter (sort of hard to take down good notes when playing ftf).

Here are two AARs form this scenario played on 5/24.

GAME 1

Germans: Tank Commander & Steve / Russians: Gene & Tyler

The Russians started out w/ an AIR POWER and targeted the four Tiger units but the only effect was to retreat one of them.

On Russian turn two, six shots vs a panzer would only get one hit. This would be the worst the Russians shot vs the panzers and Tigers for the rest of the game.

On the second German turn, the fixed bridge was destroyed and the following German turn, one tank was killed off while another was hit once from 8 shots.

Russian turn 4 saw a Tiger eliminated on 2 dice - 1 hit and the roll was a grenade. Also, a panzer was hit twice and a bridge was built on their left. The Germans pulled back two 1 fig panzers out of harm's way. On our next turn, another Russian tank is destroyed to give us a 2 to 1 lead. But then a German 2 fig Inf on the center hill is eliminated to tie the game. We storm back on the turn after, blasting a 3 fig tank and two 3 fig Inf. However, the Russians get both 1 fig panzers w/ single shots and then finish off a 2 fig Inf to tie the game again, 5 to 5. G 7 sees a 1 fig panzer recover two hits from M & M. On G 8 an ARMRO ASSAULT w/ two Tigers and a 1 fig panzer sees no Overrun attacks and but 4 hits w/ 11 dice. The Russians then kill off the 1 fig panzer and both Tigers (one w/ 6 shots and no retreat - the other w/ 2 shots). So far, 10 shots have accounted for three Tigers. The only German armor on the board is a 1 fig panzer and a Tiger - both on the German left and a center panzer. The Russian hold an 8 to 5 lead at this point and things look grim for our side. But on our turn we finish off two 1 fig Inf and two 2 fig Inf to go into the lead 9 to 8. But once again the game is tied after another Russian AP kills off a 1 fig Inf. I then kill off one center arty and reduce an Inf, but my last panzer is killed off on 3 for 4 shooting.

With the score at 10 to 10, we kill off a 2 fig Inf and a 1 fig tank (no retreat) in the center and a 3 fig tank on our right (no retreat) w/ FIREFIGHT to win the game 13 to 10.

The Russian fire vs our armor was just plain deadly. Had they not wasted their first AP vs the tigers, they may have won this game.

GAME 2 (A rematch w/ a change of sides)

Russian: Tank commander & Steve vs Germans: Gene & Tyler

On R 1 a pontoon bridge is built on the left / center hex. On G1 a Russian tank w/ no retreat is blasted off the board w/ BARRAGE. The Germans also attempted to blow both bridges but failed. But on G 2, the pontoon bridge is blown w/ a tank on it. The early game is not going well for our side - two tanks lost already. On R 3, we kill off a center Inf. Then we lose another tank but eliminated a center panzer in return. On G 5, a TFH only orders 6 units w/ only 3 that could fire - 3 Inf on the German left. Of their 12 shots four hits were scored.

On R 6, a M & M failed to recover any hits to a 1 fig tank on our left - this unit was deep into German territory and could have finished off a 1 fig Inf, but now is a sitting duck. We did kill off a 3 fig inf though. On G 6, two more tanks went down. We eliminate a 1 fig Inf but then lose another tank and and Inf on G 8. We are now behind 7 to 4 and have lost more than half our armor w/ little to show for it.

On R 9, we play TFH but only get 3 hits. On our next turn we get our 5th medal. But over the next two German turns, they notch 4 more medals to our 3 to make it an 11 to 8 game.

Then on G 12, an ARMOR ASSAULT w/ 4 Tigers (after the loss of another Russian tank) ends it but just so as first a 2 dice attack then a 3 dice attack miss an arty unit. Then the last attack (3 dice)vs the sandbagged arty rolls 2 flags. This retreats the arty to our baseline where the OR attack w/ 4 dice gets the two hits needed for the win.

The difference in this game was the ability of the Germans to kill our armor at will - did they ever miss?!? Of the first 6 tanks we lost (2 elite), I think we may have fired off 10 shots and got 4 hits combined.
