Overlord - is it a must? Wed, 24 March 2010 10:44
I just placed an order along with the extra maps and Eastern Front expansion pack. I'm also planning to get another set, the Medeterranian expansion pack and the Tiger in the snow as I would want to be able to play the huge battle with my son. My question is, do I really need to purchase OP Overlord? or can I just play the huge battle with just the cards that we have?

I've read about how Overlord works, but with only two players most of the time, where does Overlord come into play? It's probably a st@pid question for most, but being a newbie and just getting my feet wet, I'd like to solicit as much advice I can get from the experts so that I'd be able to maximize my purchases with expansion pacts that I can really use. Thanks.

Do no worry about asking questions here -- I find it an excellent way to get answers Smile

As the the Overlord Expansion. As you plan on getting a second set which would give you two sets of regular cards, you can play OL scenarios with those. The only thing is you have to shuffle both decks together and of course, properly separate them when you wish to play regular scenarios -- a bit if a hassle.

So by buying the OL expansion you avoid that. Secondly, the OL cards are more user friendly for playing OL scenarios as they have icons on the cards which make things clearer where and who may play a card(for example, the CinC cards have a symbol on them to indicate this).

As to only 2 players, OL works just fine that way and allows those players to get in on soem of the excellent OL scenarios when they cannot round up several players for these games.

Hope this helps.

I've also bought the Overlord expansion and are most pleased with it.

The cards are fully adepted to overlord giving the correct information about how to move.
And since I only have one base game I needed the tokens to complete the unit setup.

Tigers in the snow is a great expansion. Although I haven't played my Sword of stalingrad expansion I think I like Tigers in the snow more because of the manouvrebility of the unit and the fact that both sides have to attack in stead of one defending and one attacking.

Thanks guys for the advice, I'll put that in the "basket" along with the others. Just have to wait for the first batch to arrive before I put in the second batch. Off-topic, I just placed an order for some (39) tanks at 1/144 scale (at $2 a pop, thats pretty cheap - 21st Century Toys) though I wished they'd used 1/72 scale for the tanks, but I do understand that by doing so, probably ends up with a very huge map.

I know this is not going to be cheap, but this will last so much longer than any video game/console out there (I am a video gamer myself)... way longer that hopefully my son can pass this on to his kids someday. I wished I've done a better job of keeping my American Heritage Dogfight board game intact.
