The Disaster at Dieppe - Last in the Series? Tue, 03 August 2010 22:18

From DoW:
'Here comes the final installment in our first Battle Maps series!'

What does this mean?

Simply that the first series (installment) is over...the second series will be coming next! Cool

The fact that the first series is over is a given. That there will be another series is also a given. The question is whether the format will change.

I hope not, the overlord battle maps are great for playing Memoir 44 at conventions. They also make a great way to introduce new players to the game. This way, they don't have to be great at strategy to win, (just have a Commander in Chief who is). I figure I have played about a dozen games of Memoir at conventions. I used to go to four conventions a year in Illinois and Missouri. Since becoming disabled, I've cut back to two. (I have a hard time walking very far). I have some pictures of some of these on my user page.

I read a post by Eric (from Days of Wonder) where he explained that the battle maps were in series because the plastic figures were created in sets and the first set is finished.

So the next series may look the same (printed Overlord maps with miniatures) but the figures would just be coming from a different series of molds. On the other hand, we might start seeing battle maps from different Theaters or preprinted maps of Breakthrough battles in the new series. Who know?! Cool

And thus we see why the Tigers are gray and not . . . gray.

Exactly! Cool

Who knows, maybe the next series of miniatures will be black, or green (not...green), or hot pink! Laughing

I'd like to see some Pacific or Mediterranean theater battle maps. Maybe Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, Battle of El Alamein or other famous battles from those theaters.

You did see that the most recent Battle Map includes an Overlord Battle from North Africa, right? And three of the normal sized battles in the new Battle Map are for North Africa!

You're right, I'm looking forward to that. I'm looking forward to playing that one at a con next year.

Read the following end response by Eric:

http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/msg/?th=15312&start=0

Also note that Eric has removed those prior images with the intent to not mislead anyone into thinking that we might see them in production in the future. He has retained the Willys jeep model as it is now released with DISASTER AT DIEPPE:

It wouldn't entirely surprise me to see the Tigers, supply trucks, Jeeps, half-tracks, and maybe anti-tank guns in a future expansion.

And I'll be fine with that, assuming DoW does something to add value to such a pack.

Fantasy Flight recently released a "Creatures" expansion for BattleLore -- M44 fans who also like medieval and/or fantasy combat should try this -- but the pack did nothing more than collect two creatures already released and a third new creature, plus four scenarios. That for $35.

No thanks.

I don't mind paying again for items I already have, as long as there is some added value to my purchase. I trust that if DoW ever decide to go down this road, something I'm sure those who haven't invested in the battle maps would welcome, they'll do it right and be sure to make it worth our while.
