NC 2010 what u need to know/want to ask ... Wed, 25 August 2010 11:34
This thread is for all that you want to ask about NC and don`t know where to do so - or for all the info we need to give you to play the tournament ... basically for everything ... you even may ask why Mudda bores Erwin Dekker (you might not get an answer though - at least not from me, but hey - I do not read the BILD)

feel free to use this thread for all around NC 2010

I will use it for an important rule info for the captains registering :

Rule 6. Guests are not allowed to play. Players that are not registered players at the end of registration phase cannot play. Players are not allowed to change their names during the tournament.

So PLEASE, captains - when you register, use the CORRECT nicks - the ones you want to use during NC (including team prefixes!). And in case you have to change your nicks for NC - that has to be done BEFORE the NC starts. (But I guess you experienced captains know that all anyway ... )

All clear? Very Happy well - if not - use this thread Cool

Hi,

TGV are trying to figure how many teams we will be able to register (2 or 3 teams this year). We have too many players for 2 teams and, alas, still need more players for a 3rd. We would really like to register a 3rd team with new young average players with RV as a captain to make it work.

In order to make it easy and clear for us, RV has a question (that might be sent through the board later).

Would we be allowed to include 1 or 2 Belgian players (Super Chief and maybe a busy Geoff) in our teams as we did last year ?

-Belgium didn't suceed in forming a team for this year-

We guess TRUE or any Transnationational team would / may claim those players.

We just need a quick answer (as quick as the current situation without TD and board would require lol) to help us organizing our teams.

In the name of RV and the TGV's,

Sysy

Italy is too in trouble to form a team:

Everyone interested in forming a transnational please contact me.

I remind that there are few of us that could play for other teams too:

Barbarnaud can also play for France.
Fitzcarraldo can also play for Spain
Qorlas can also play for UK or France or not play at all Wink

Word I got was Canada was also in doubt about having enough to make up a team. So there may be some Canadians available to a transnational team.

Last year, there was a list of top players (top200 ? or top500 ?) sorted by countries... I don't remember, and I didn't search in the forum, who did this great and big work, but it could be very useful again, especially for "smaller" countries... maybe ?

Btw, 2 days ago, I met matsch73 (well-known Canadian) and he is interested in NC, but again, not sure at all that he will find enough players to form a Canadian team... Rolling Eyes

Heres one question I have: may we change the rule into free choice of "hidden cards" in the games?!

Hi. not board or captain of team still TRUE wont oppose frenchs taking geoff (he's a nice guy we would gladly have him aboard also, but his preference is for a french spoken team)

TRUE is more or less solved, still we are always open in the market.... Smile either canadians, belgiums, italians or some other surprise

My thoughts on the last posts:

TN teams - please do not forget that players of one nation HAVE to stay together even when they are not able to form their own team. ie it is not allowed that one canadian plays for a french/us/whatever team and another canadian player plays for a TN team - unless of course he meets the requirements of rule 2:

2. Players who live, study or work in country A and have nationality B may play for either A or B.
- which goes first anyway ...

@ Mudda ... we voted on that last year ... is there really need to do that over and over again this year? (I suggest you go and ask Erwin Dekker for his oppinion - BILD reporters are always right Twisted Evil)

Hi all,
I'm not sure why the spplitting into groups is the one posted in the rules instead of the one that follows when there are 13, 14, 19, 20 or 22 groups. Is it just a mistake or someone has an explanation for it?

11-16: Round robin, 2 groups, with QF, SF and F. #1s choose opponent of other group in QF; cannot meet other #1 in SF, cannot meet best classified of own group in SF.
11: (1,4,5,8,9) and (2,3,6,7,10,11), 9 weeks
12: (1,4,5,8,9,12) and (2,3,6,7,10,11), 9 weeks
13: (1,4,5,8,9,12,13) and (2,3,6,7,10,11), 11 weeks
14: (1,4,5,8,9,12,13) and (2,3,6,7,10,11,14), 11 weeks
15: (1,4,5,8,9,12,13) and (2,3,6,7,10,11,14,15), 11 weeks
16: (1,4,5,8,9,12,13,16) and (2,3,6,7,10,11,14,15), 11 weeks

17-22: Round robin, 3 groups, with QF, SF and F.
4 teams advance per group, the group with the best 2nd comer will be renamed to group D, the next groups circular to E and F, then the pairings for first rd KO will be:
1E-bye, 3F-3D, 2D-bye, 2F-4E ---- 1F-bye, 2E-4D, 1D-bye, 3E-4F
best 2nd comer will be determined according to the tiebreaker rules (13.7)
Quarterfinal: 1Evs3F-3D; 2Dvs2F-4E;;; 1Fvs2E-4D; 1Dvs3E-4F
17: (1,6,7,12,13), (2,5,8,11,14,17) and (3,4,9,10,15,16), 9 weeks
18: (1,6,7,12,13,18), (2,5,8,11,14,17) and (3,4,9,10,15,16), 9 weeks
19: (1,6,7,12,13,18,19), (2,5,8,11,14,17) and (3,4,9,10,15,16), 11 weeks
20: (1,6,7,12,13,18,19), (2,5,8,11,14,17,20) and (3,4,9,10,15,16), 11 weeks
21: (1,6,7,12,13,18,19), (2,5,8,11,14,17,20) and (3,4,9,10,15,16,21), 11 weeks
22: (1,6,7,12,13,18,19), (2,5,8,11,14,17,20) and (3,4,9,10,15,16,21,22), 11 weeks

23/24: four groups (1,8,9,16,17,24)(2,7,10,15,18,23)(3,6,11,14,19,22)(4,5,12,13 ,20,21) - groups split according to ELO team rank.

Thanks! Smile

Nations Cup are going for the sixth season, a wonderful tournament.
The Rules are from the beginning. It's important to have rules but during the years some rules changes. Some rule gets obsolete.

One of these rules, in my opinion, concerns the making of Transnational teams. The rule I'm thinking of is the one that Masimo describes:
TN teams - please do not forget that players of one nation HAVE to stay together even when they are not able to form their own team. ie it is not allowed that one canadian plays for a french/us/whatever team and another canadian player plays for a TN team - unless of course he meets the requirements of rule 2:

Why this rule?
Maybe in the beginning there were some players that were afraid that there would be a dream team constructed with the best players from different countries. This fear must be obsolete. Why:
1.Hard to imagine that any of the teams that has been playing for so many years would split up to form a dream team.
2.Even if they could they would hardly be ranked higher than the very top-teams of today.
3. Even with todays rules it's possible to make strong Transnational teams ( anybody remember last years Final)?

So, this rules fills no purpose. What it does is keeping away nice and good players from small countries to join NC. TRUE is pretty much set so I don't worry about us but there are other teams trying to form.
Would it really be so frightful if it was allowed to have 2 canadian players playing in two different Transnational teams. Of course not.

So keep the good work with adjusting the thorough rules to the development to the presence

Another thing, rules states:

17. Nature of the games
A. 1v1;
B. US map;
C. Rated;
D. Observable: Hide cards or "buddies only" option is not allowed, but TD can allow the use of the 'hide cards' option on certain clashes if asked by captains who suspect cheating on the other side. Accidentally starting a game which is NOT observable does not have to be replayed. The opening player shall be reminded after that game about the rules. Only if he continues deliberately to start closed the match shall be given as a win to the opposing team.

We have now discovered that the "hide cards" doesn't work against possible cheaters.

Better to change the rules to
TD can allow the use of "buddies only" option

You seem to have no objection to the concept itself here ?

I think there's absolutely nothing wrong with the rules. It is and has been debatable to have transnational teams in the first place. It's the NATION's cup after all. I see no reason why 80% of the tournament should be the NATION's cup and then some other random teams just enter as they please, under the assumption that it's so much fun and everybody should be allowed to participate and one should be able to play with friends.

I have no problem with a Scandi-Portguese TRUE or a Greek-British team or a Canadian-Australian team or whatever you like, but I think, if you have a transnational team in the first place, you should at least try to stick to the spirit of the whole NATION idea.

There are other tournaments for playing with random line-ups.

14: (1,4,5,8,9,12,13) and (2,3,6,7,10,11,14), 11 weeks

with 13 teams the idea was/is that the bye stays in the group with the highest rated team of the tournament (which is discussable - but usually if there is the need for a bye that`s the way it goes)
with 14 teams that is indeed a mistype and I`ll change it in the rules immediately. It has to be the way Sara put it.

Quote:

19: (1,6,7,12,13,18,19), (2,5,8,11,14,17) and (3,4,9,10,15,16), 11 weeks
20: (1,6,7,12,13,18,19), (2,5,8,11,14,17,20) and (3,4,9,10,15,16), 11 weeks
21: (1,6,7,12,13,18,19), (2,5,8,11,14,17,20) and (3,4,9,10,15,16,21), 11 weeks
22: (1,6,7,12,13,18,19), (2,5,8,11,14,17,20) and (3,4,9,10,15,16,21,22), 11 weeks

same idea here, the "potentially" stronger groups get the byes first, so we fill up from the bottom.

Thanks for pointing it out, Sara

@ Olle Boll:

Truckerteller already gave you the right answer and I just want to add it from what I recall when we worked up the current rules after the struggle a few years ago.

Bassie`s primarily intention was a true (and only) NATIONAL competition. The only "transnational" team allowed was a team formed by members of the DoW crew (this is still in the rules btw. - already historic, so to say)

This is a point we should not discuss anymore - we did it some years ago and there was a clear decision that we do NOT want a sole "TEAM" competition but keep the "NATIONS CUP" with this national idea.

from this background we tried to work up how we can allow all those small nations to play but still keep the nation idea. The rules we have now are as close as one can get to this idea without refusing these players (at least as I see it at the moment - if there is a better way - fine). If players from ie Canada split over 3 to 4 teams ... that would be totally vs the original idea ...

as far as the "buddies only" option - that rule was discussed and voted on last year - majority was against buddies only ... personally I have problems with discusing things over and over again every year - it just steals all our time when someone who did not get his oppinion through one year pulls the same thing out the next year (as Mudda tried as well)

Thanks for comments on my PM.
I understand now that this issue was discussed a lot before I entered the NC-world and I hve no intention to stir up this again.

I'm sorry Masimo that you get frequent suggestions about changing rules. You are doing a great job and I don't want you getting tired of annoying people.
But the descicion about allowing for TD to allow using "hide-card" was taken before anyone noticed that it was of no use against cheaters. If there are rules that are obsolete and old and of no value I thought it could be of interest to inform Tds and anyone in charge.

np, Olle Boll -i`m not annoyed

and I even realize that my memories start to get weak Crying or Very Sad

well my answer to Suburu`s question was only partially right. And after some heavy wondering and searching I found the origin for the grouping. It is still back from 2005/2006, the original rules by bassie. When I recall it right he did put it together due to two arguments:
the bye in the higher ranked group, then always try to have an EVEN number of teams (i.e. with 14 teams he prefered one group with 6 teams and one with 8 teams vs two groups of 7 teams and so on) we need bassies comment here though - I am not 100% sure that I recall his intention right - still I am surprised that we did not stumble over that any earlier, probably cause we never had that number of teams? With that background the grouping 14 is no mistype and I changed my earlier rulechange back ....

Anyway, we can surely change that - I guess it should be a "democratic" decision, which means we should have the board vote for that?

you find the very original rules here in bassie`s post:

well yepp Qorlas Smile lucky we were 21 teams then Smile - seems that is the only constellation when Bassie thought it is easier to have all three groups equally ...

as I mentioned - all this is due to Bassie`s set up - it was never questioned before (I didn`t even realize untill Sara brought it up Rolling Eyes - you know, I love to copy/paste Very Happy ) - we can surely start to change that, I know bassie well enough to know that he wouldn`t mind us finding another distribution.

I will think how to put it into board form and then go ahead and ask the board shortly (as it might be of importance this year)

AHHH and edit:
TWO (or more) PLAYERS FOR ITALY!!! it would be a great miss if they couldn`t play Crying or Very Sad

PLEASE ALL SPREAD THIS: - I had to change the registration deadline to:
SUNDAY 5th of SEPTEMBER 21:00 GMT (22:00 in Germany), which is one hour earlier as initially posted, as DOM, who agreed on doing the ranking and group distribution for us might need a little bit of extra time, just in case there is a VERY LAST MINUTE ENTRY, which he would then have to add to the ranking rooster. The ranking will be done exactly 22:00 GMT (23:00 in Germany) on Sunday 5th of September

yep that is correct (bassie stealing the witch's account for once) - I am not fond of 6-7-7 but I now realise 6-6-8 is worse. This is a minor discussion anyhow - just settle it for the coming years please. Thanks Mas for all your work btw.

I watched 2 hidden card games last night to see if this still happens. In one game I saw as above, the 2 tix the person had, but in the other game it only showed the ticket that was discarded. While not great, seeing the discard is certainly much better than seeing the kept tix. Does anyone know why it happens some times and not others?

1a. Did I see correctly, that at this time we have 17 teams signed up, with 2 teams we know trying to get together? (Those teams being Italy & TRUE, so we are looking at 19?)

1b. If there are other teams getting organized, perhaps a note to Dom would help in his planning?

2. Do the captains need to put their team's player numbers in so it is easier for Dom to do his work on September 5th.

3. Finally if it is 19, are we happy enough with the 7, 6, 6 set up from Bassie original or is it an official change to what is listed above? I know I am fine either way. But I just ask.

I guess we will have 19 or 20 teams as the Canadians also were looking for a team, but I don't see a # 21 which would be best for us...

@onyx 1b.

If there are other teams getting organized, perhaps a note to Dom would help in his planning?

No need to...just use theTNT-THREAD

@onyx 2.

Do the captains need to put their team's player numbers in so it is easier for Dom to do his work on September 5th.

Also no need to...Masimo already put together the teams registered so far on the REGISTRATION PAGE - you also can see most information on the TIKI PAGE FOR NC 2010

@all captains: Please check your team on both sites and post any error - please do NOT edit your registration post anymore, if you extend your team (like Zeno/Team USA) please make a new post in the registration thread, so I don't have to check all posts again.

@onyx 3.

Finally if it is 19, are we happy enough with the 7, 6, 6 set up from Bassie original or is it an official change to what is listed above? I know I am fine either way. But I just ask.

Masimo's former post about that

as I mentioned - all this is due to Bassie`s set up - it was never questioned before (I didn`t even realize untill Sara brought it up Rolling Eyes - you know, I love to copy/paste Very Happy ) - we can surely start to change that, I know bassie well enough to know that he wouldn`t mind us finding another distribution.

I will think how to put it into board form and then go ahead and ask the board shortly (as it might be of importance this year)

As we do not have a TD yet, just let's wait until Masimo comes back on monday morning, maybe we will have this point on the NC Board soon - I will only fix the seeding on sunday evening as planned.

Hi,

I have a question about the calendar.

As we are 19, one group has to play two more weeks than the others.
Should we start all at the same time, an then wait for two weeks the other group, or will be better than the smaller groups start playing after 2 weeks?

Yep Pegaso,

you see the problem...

In my opinion the best solution could be:

*Give 2 weeks to the other groups to play their first and their final round. In this way we will need 7 weeks to play all the round robin like last year.

Group A and group B:

1st game: week 1 and week 2
2nd game: week 3
3rd game: week 4
4th game: week 5
5th game: week 6 and week 7

group C:

1st game: week 1
2nd game: week 2
3rd game: week 3
4th game: week 4
5th game: week 5
6th game: week 6
7th game: week 7

just my two cents

very busy weekend/week for me - let me first thank DOM for doing the final registration phase and grouping!

Thanks DOM

well - in my oppinion 19/20 teams is about the most difficult number of teams possible, two weeks difference within the groups for RR is not good, but that`s the way it is.

I think the NC should start for all teams at the SAME TIME (I don`t like to see two groups join the NC two weeks later)

I think Qorlas suggestion is great and probably the best we can do. So unless there are no other/better ideas let`s go with that.

TD - ..... Qorlas is registered for Italy - which I think is very good and the right decision, Qorlas (even though I am convinced you`d been a great TD!)

Sauvignon did send me a pm that he was willing to support us as (Co)-TD, but was quite busy at the moment and not sure that he will be able to do the job all the time.
So I have to check that with him and also work on the idea of a tripple TD team in case he can`t. I will do so after wednesday when I have more spare time.

BUT!! by wednesday we need the lineups! as time is running out for now we have to cover the first week. I will do this very undemocratic and pick a player from each group to do the lineup for the next group. I will myself do the job for group C, and I hereby ask dea and onyx puffin to do the same for successive group. I think all of us three are known enough not to be doubted and also well enough experienced with tournaments.

If there are ANY objections to this procedure post them FAST! - Wednesday morning I will post the exact procedure for the first lineup for NC 2010, so that you captains have enough time to get tem in by 22:00 GMT Smile

Lets get the NC rolling ....

Unless there are "ANY objections", this is Round Robin Schedule in NC 2010:

GROUP A
Round 1 (12.09.-26.09.): UEG-TU, CAT-AGT, AMD-White
Round 2 (24.09.-03.10.): UEG-AGT, CAT-AMD, TU-White
Round 3 (01.10.-10.10.): UEG-AMD, CAT-White, TU-AGT
Round 4 (08.10.-17.10.): UEG-White, CAT-TU, AMD-AGT
Round 5 (15.10.-31.10.): UEG-CAT, AMD-TU, AGT-White

GROUP B
Round 1 (12.09.-26.09.): OLE-TD, TRUE-SMP, SOS-ITA
Round 2 (24.09.-03.10.): OLE-SMP, TRUE-SOS, TD-ITA
Round 3 (01.10.-10.10.): OLE-SOS, TRUE-ITA, TD-SMP
Round 4 (08.10.-17.10.): OLE-ITA, TRUE-TD, SOS-SMP
Round 5 (15.10.-31.10.): OLE-TRUE, SOS-TD, SMP-ITA

GROUP C
Round 1 (12.09.-19.09.): TuS-Rosé, Red-BH, AT-FIN, BYE:TIC
Round 2 (17.09.-26.09.): TuS-TIC, Red-FIN, BH-Rosé, BYE:AT
Round 3 (24.09.-03.10.): TuS-FIN, Red-AT, TIC-Rosé, BYE:BH
Round 4 (01.10.-10.10.): Red-Rosé, AT-BH, TIC-FIN, BYE:TuS
Round 5 (08.10.-17.10.): TuS-Red, AT-TIC, FIN-BH, BYE:Rosé
Round 6 (15.10.-24.10.): TuS-BH, Red-TIC, AT-Rosé, BYE:FIN
Round 7 (22.10.-31.10.): TuS-AT, TIC-BH, FIN-Rosé, BYE:Red

PS: dea brought in another question: How do we determine the best 2nd placed team after RR as Group C has one match more?

My proposal: Just subtract the match result of C2-C7 before making the comparison!

[EDIT: right Olle, 1st week starts sunday!]

My idea,

to consider the best second place the match with the 7th placed team will not be considered for the 2nd team in group C.

(probably Dom wrote exactly the same thing Wink )

TD status:

Okay Masimo, I am trying to understand what we now have for TD.
1. Is it a triple TD of Masimo, Dea, and Onyx puffin? (each assigned a group A-B-C)
OR is it, sauvignon as Co-TD with the 3 of us as the other Co-TD?

Is there a Co-TD with sauvignon? Sauvi said he was unavailble for a few of the weeks.

2. And when I see thekid's objection, am I remembering right that sauvignon was in some of the concerns of the past that needed ruled on?
If the answer to last question's answer is yes, then perhaps we do need a triple TD for this tournament. I do not plan to play in more than 1 or 2 matches this year, so I am more available than usual to help out that way.

well ... IF we need a triple, I'm not the best option, as I'll be on holiday for 15 days at some time during RR

a fulltime TD would be best anyhow

In summary:

we need one TD for every group now (so 3). We will need also a TD for the playoff that will haveto be taken from players not involved at all in the playoffs.

Re:NC 2010 what u need to know/want to ask ... Tue, 07 September 2010 05:00
So can Qorlas substitute in for Dea as the third triple TD?

If so that would make this still work I think. I would have to do group B since Masimo and Qorlas are in group B.

And yes we would need a TD still for the play-offs. But a TD for a shorter time like the play-offs may be easier to get, and we may know by last few weeks some teams who will not make the play-off, and someone could do it from there.

Re:NC 2010 what u need to know/want to ask ... Tue, 07 September 2010 09:36
PLEASE NO TRIPLE TD FOR ALL NC ...

right now the most important thing is to get the NC rolling which means that we need someone to do the lineups. That is why - right now - we need three well reputed players from each of the three groups for (beeing in a big hurry I picked dea - who I know personally and very well and onyx cause he organized tournaments - later I realized I should have asked Scott with all his experience as a great past TD - I hope I did not offend you with not asking you Scott)

I hope we do NOT need this constellation for the rest of the tournament, just now and maybee RR2.

I will still try to find a TD for us (and I read your objections, kid - that`s fine and accepted) - the best is when it is all in one hand.

I guess there is no objection vs dea, onyx and myself doing the lineups tomorrow? Then we will see what we can do.
