Soooo I figure everyone would be interested in a global play-off
Rules:
- Elimination tournament, we start with 8 or 16 or 32 and end with 1 worldwide champion.
- If other number of people join in, I will randomly distribute byes on the first round. This means you skip to the second round without playing.
- Every round is played on a map I select randomly. For example first round everyone plays on Omaha Beach
- Every round I pair up opponents randomly. A round takes 1 week, during which you should message each other and agree on a time to play together. I will try to pair up time zones as close as possible
- The first round runs until all battles are played.
- The next rounds will get a time limit (eg 1 week, 1 month) based on times needed in the first round.
- If no matches are played I will try to use fair judgement. All cases will be reviewed individually.
The games itself:
- Two games against every opponents, one as axis, one as allies. Total number of medals wins.
- In case of a tie, total number of miniatures killed is used as a tiebreaker.
- We play with the real scenario's, so everyone needs to use all available unit upgrades. So stock up on gold.
- Both players write an after-action report that is at least 2 paragraphs long. Trashtalking the other army is encouraged (eg wehrmacht, stiff lips or french cowardice). Personal insults are not allowed.
- Also make a screenshot of the statistics tab.
- Post a link to the AAR's and screenshots in this thread.
- how to make a screenshot in windows: http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/msg/?th=20646&start=0
Bonus points:
- Post a well-edited youtube commentary video.
- Recording can be done with fraps, editing with windows movie maker. Both are free.
- This competition is open to everyone! Just record a match between yourself and some other opponent according to the tournament rules: full ingot use, playing both allies and axis, tie breaker etc.
Prizes:
- I'm sponsoring 2x200GI's sergeant packs. Also one Captain's pack is available.
- The winner of the tournament receives one captain's pack
- The runner up wins a sergeant pack
- The best youtube video earns the second 200gi pack.
- Feel free to sponsor extra prizes *COUGH*dow*COUGH* =)
- The host can not win the youtube prize. He is allowed to try earn first place.

EDIT1: Christmas truce between December the 24th and January the 2nd. I will anounce the next round before the truce starts, so if you can play in this week: great. If not, no biggies, the round will last a week longer
EDIT2: Time rules changed
EDIT3: Added Captain's pack as a prize
EDIT4: REGISTRATION CLOSED
EDIT5: movie competition rules changed

There will be a Christmas truce between December 24th and January 2nd. I will update the rules to reflect this.

By all means, if anyone has suggestions to the rules, PM them to me and I'll see how and if they can fit in. This Christmas truce is a good example.

How will you deal with drops? Currently re entering a game is broken, causing freezes and medal count resets. I won't be able to play because of this reason since my Inet is so shaky, but you should probably have a policy in place. I imagine most players can sort this out on their own, but in the event of a dispute, something should be written beforehand.

This may sound harsh but it's up to you to make sure you're internet is up to the task. So if you drop, you lose the game. If your opponent is of good sports, he might give you a rematch, but that's entirely up to his discretion.
If this problem persists you might want to consider changing ISP's, as any online game has this policy during ranked matches. If you live in a region with shoddy internet, there's nothing I can do unfortunately.
I'm sorry for a most likely non-satisfying answer.

Dear Marnick,
as a participant of King of the hill ladder which was already started in 2008 and still ongoing right now, I have several suggestion :
1. to limit a battle in only a week, that would be very hard because of the timezone matter, because in ladder, a battle will be limited in about a month, and with that flexible amount of time, sometimes a round can be spanned to 1.5 - 2 month.
The solution is probably to gather a majority of players in the same timezone or at least if the player commit to play in a week even with different timezone.
2. A tied match should be broken by counting up figures eliminated. In M44 online, after a battle, you can write up how many figures you killed, and then added up both games for tie breaker. If it's still a tie, then another tie breaker is to see which underdog/least-favored side killed more unit, and he's the winner.
Thanks

I agree with the previous poster - 1 week is too tough, and what happens if a game is not played in the week? which player do you eliminate? In the King of the Hill ladder John S has trouble getting everyone to complete their games in 1.5 - 2 months!
I think you will need to ensure one round is completed before moving to the next round.

Hey people!
Good news and better news + awesome news
Good news first: I see there's quite some talk about the time zones and I understand that. Please report your time zones and I will pair up time zones as close as possible in the first couple of rounds. This is a global play-off so there's bound to be inconveniences. I hope everything works out, if not ... I'll judge on a case by case basis.
2nd: One week might indeed be short. I'm online a lot and can play games just whenever, but for others this is indeed troublesome. I'm going to let the first round go until all matches have been played to get an idea. This data I will use to put a fair time limit on the next rounds. I trust everyone will try to complete their rounds asap, stalling is not good manners in this game
And now for the awesome news!
One of the players has graciously donated a Captain's Pack to the winner of the tournament. This means that the first place will earn 1000 Gold Ingots. Second place earns 200 gold ingots, and the winner of the video contest wins another 200 gold ingots. However this player wishes to stay anonymous until at least after the tournament ends. Be assured that he will get no advantages what-so-ever.

I'll be unavailable for about 2 weeks around Christmas so I didn't sign up...but if we're taking the first round a little slower I would love to participate! If my joining makes this too compecated with getting the first round done, I can also sit this one out...

Hey people
People are joining way faster than I expected. At this moment there's 16 people in the pool which would allow for 4 rounds of tournament. In order to not complicate things too much this first time, I'm closing registration.
Expect the first list of battles to be published at the 30th of november. Keep an eye on this thread!
Greetings
Marnick

Good luck guys, please keep us updated, and be patient, there is always a learning curve and the more people you add the more can go wrong. Be mindful of peoples real lives and time zones.
above all... have fun.

You can't go wrong asking Randwulf for advice marnick, I have seen him solve some tournament issues that no one could have envisaged and I am sure he would be open to help, as he has done in other M'44 communities for so many years.

Actually this is a great answer Like I said, I won't be joining due to my Inet limitations(my only high-speed option is shoddy satellite internet), so it doesn't bother me. I just thought it was an issue you should have a policy in place for before everything started.

Is there some sort of replay function? I don't think I want to enter, but I do want to take a crack at commentating. However, I can't seem to figure out how to 'sit in' on a match once it is complete. Or would I sit in on an active game and record it?

At this time there is no way to watch a battle. I don't believe there are plans that will allow people to watch a game "live" (while the battle is happening) but eventually we'll be able to watch a 'replay' like you said.
That isn't ready yet, so for this first tournament you'll just have to read the AAR's and watch the movie in your mind!

Round 1:
Phread vs marnick
Gottoman vs HazzMatt
Pomakli vs Oros
Kromka vs JohnnyBoyb
Mekke71 vs MightyJim 83
Colonel Sponz vs HansLanda
numquam Retro vs Minkor
Garibaldi italian vs ad79
These all tie up pretty okay except for me and Phread. I pitted the two of us together because I have a pretty flexible sleep schedule. I'll have to defeat him so next round there won't be a gmt+13 anymore
Anyways: first battle will be fought on
Pegasus Bridge
All of you drew first blood on this battlefield so it seemed natural to have this one as the opening battle. Enjoy while you can because for the next round, you'll have to get your feet wet.
I expect the following:
- Contact your opponent and arrange a time to battle
- try to battle in a reasonable amount of time: within 2-6 weeks
- Battle twice on Pegasus Bridge, once as allies and once as axis
- Screenshot the statistics screen and write a 2 paragraph AAR.
- Post the results on this thread, also email them to marnick.sluismans@gmail.com
If there are any issues, email or pm me. If your opponent doesn't reply to any messages, contact me and we'll work something out.
Anyone else who didn't get a spot: pm and I'll put you on a reserve list.

It does not have to be in flawless english, it'd just be fun to read how other battles went. Otherwise they're meaningless statistics.

Round 1 : gottoman vs hazzmatt
Pegasus Bridge 12/04/2010 8PM PST
In the 1st game, HazzMatt played the Allies and Gottoman the Axis. HazzMatt started things off by moving a couple of his infantry towards Orne Bridge. He made a couple actions in that area and got a few shot off at the one Axis unit on the other side of the bridge. Then Gottoman played a "Behind Enemy Lines" on that unit and challenged HazzMatt at the Orne Bridge. However, HazMatt had an ambush card at the ready and hit the unit first taking out one figure and forcing 2 retreats. HazzMatt was able to take and control that bridge.
On the other side of the map, Gottoman was having some success. He got an early hit and retreat on Howard which ended up being 2 hits as Howard's back-up units hadn't had a chance to mobilize yet. HazzMatt played an Air Power card on the units near the Pegasus Bridge and did some damage. Gottoman then mobilized his forces on the other side of the Pegasus Bridge and got some shots off at the remains of Howard's team. Gottoman pushed hard, but HazzMat got plenty of cards that activated that section and some good rolls to boot. It ended with the Allies winning 4 medals to 2.
The second game went somewhat similarly for the Axis and Allies respectively. Gottoman made an early and strong move for Orne Bridge and was able to take out both of the Axis units on that side even though they were able to get to the protection of the trees fairly quickly. HazzMatt made a few dents in Howard's team, but Gottoman only needed one medal from that side of the board to cinch the game. He got fairly quickly and won with the same 4-2 score as the first game.
We we not sure about the tie breaker, but Steve Nightrain suggested (in this thread) that ties should be broken by total number of figures killed. If that is the case then I (HazzMatt) won 29 figures to 24. Let us know if there is some other tie breaking condition.
