Breakthrough Next? Mon, 16 July 2012 17:56
So, I currently have a $30 coupon for purchase of a new expansion from purchasing the large gold ingot package (M44 online). I'm trying to figure out which expansion to purchase.

I currently have one of each:

Base Game
Pacific
Eastern
Terrain Pack
Campaign Book 2
Winter/Desert Boards

Most would probably suggest Mediterranean, but I don't have a lot of interest in the desert battles since playing them online (maybe one day).

I am really interested in the Breakthrough Kit (BT). It seems to add a bit more strategy to the game. However, I have noticed that based on what I currently have, it seems I could only play a few BT scenarios, and none of the campaigns. Most of the BT scenarios require other expansions. I see many in my campaign book that require "Battle Maps." I'm not really sure what this is, and I am wondering if this is a HARD requirement or are their workarounds? The next expansion I would get would probably be Winter Wars, but that might not be for a while.

There is also the issue of just having one command deck (until I get Winter Wars). Does that greatly inhibit the BT scenarios. Can you just reshuffle as you get close to finishing the deck?

I guess my question is: based on my current M44 sets is there enough bang for my buck in getting the Breakthrough Kit?

Any thoughts or other expansion suggestions are appreciated.

You might also look at getting the Winter Wars expansion. It's a fun expansion and will add some helpful things to your eventual Breakthrough Kit purchase.

Like I said before, Winter Wars might be better to get first (or together with) the Breakthrough Kit. However, you should be fine to play the Breakthrough scenarios without the Battle Maps. The only things that you would be missing are unit figures (I believe) because aside from the map itself, units were the only other element. You can now get all of those same figures from the Equipment Pack, but you can also replace the missing figures with your own...or with badges.

Sure, you can play however you want! The two-deck system is really just a suggestion that you can easily work around.

I would say YES!! The Breakthrough format is so much fun and adds some great new elements. It's worth getting, even if you have to substitute some things for a little while.

Have fun! Cool

Thanks. I appreciate your responses.

I'm thinking I may go ahead with the Breakthrough Kit, and get the Winter Wars around xmas. My son and I just got Eastern Front and Campaign Book 2, so we have a good number of scenarios to work through before xmas. Adding BT will give us a little more to play the few scenarios we can play to build up to the addition of Winter Wars. I'm a big Band of Brothers fan, so Winter Wars is definitely on my list. This stuff just starts to get pricey after a while. Very Happy

I have something that might help make the decision easier. Download my Expansions document that explains what each expansion adds to the game. It shows terrain tiles, new rules, special items, and more. It can be downloaded from my user page or here:

I hope this helps.

One tip may be to buy WW now whilst you can and save / offset it for Xmas. These things have a habbit of going out of print Wink

BT is great.

Otherwise, buy everything that is still available before it goes OP.
