Swearing and Expletives

So, I read once that a Brigadier was barred from using chat because he used a French slang term that was considered offensive. It happened automatically through some algorithm or another.
But there are players whose player names are flat out obscene. Frustratingly I cannot find any convenient way to report it to the site administrators.
Since children play Memoir 44, this seems inconsistent. Perhaps the algorithm should be applied to player names as well as chat.

Earlier this year, I felt compelled to report a player name that was clearly inappropriate. I sent a screen shot to DoW, and they took care of it promptly.

I played someone who said everytime he had a bad roll a sentence.
I was curious and looked it up because it was a diffrent language then mine.
It turned out he called me a name!
I moved him to my ignore list
Sad that some people blame the opponent, and in fact when i looked at the stats mine were even worse then his.

I hope you also went ahead and reported him (or her) to DoW...the next player they called names might not be as easy going as you and being called bad names throughout a game could drive someone away from an otherwise wonderful game.

There is another out there and his "name" begins with "bad" and goes downhill from there. I placed him on my ignore list becase of his online name.
Now I know what to do when I see him online the next time.

That is the same person that I was mentioning. I think that they should unilaterally rename the player Potty Mouth.

Thankfully these people are few and far between in this community! And I appreciate that nobody has felt the need to name the person. It sounds like you guys are going about this concern in the right way and hopefully DoW will be able to resolve the issue and maintain the high standards they have always had.
This is why the Memoir '44 community is so great!!

It's a sad commentary on our times that people can't log onto a game forum without using an offensive name or offensive language. I know this doesn't happen often, but often enough. Come on people, children often log onto this forum and use it!

From a father of two relatively young children, at least they were last time I looked-holy smokes (I means $@#^&$*%) now they are 9 and 12, this doesn't much bother me. Then again, I am an exception to the rule. Language to me is a freedom to be enjoyed and I frequently enjoy every aspect of it.
Now, I am not endorsing bad language on forums or in names, especially when it is against the rules, and I don't use bad language on forums. Nor am I belittling anyone's objection to seeing bad language in the forums, after all it breaks the rules. But really, this is not about children, and personally, I don't care what language my children see for two reasons (I mean three reasons...wait lets do this again - Spanish Inquisition etc.):
1. If they are real young or they don't understand the words, they have no idea what it means. So I don't care.
2. If they understand what it means then they already know the words. Again, I don't care.
3. If there's any in-between these two options, they will eventually know what the words mean, so what does it matter in the long run. And they will know a far wider range of curse words than I ever employed.
Words do not create bad children.
What really is going on is the words offend some adults, which is fine.
Now I'll get off my soap box and go back to not caring.

DoW has said that they want to keep it "family-friendly." We're just respecting their wishes.

Interesting outlooking on swearing online, and although it's not one I agree with, I can see where you're coming from. Here's the thing. If I tell students (10-11 year olds) that they can check this forum if they have questions about the game, and I tell them that it's a 'family friendly' place, so parents don't need to worry, it comes back on me when people are swearing. By 10-11, most of the kids know the words but at that age a lot of them still have a black-and-white view of what's right and wrong, and they know that swearing is wrong (well, most of them do).
They report the swearing to their parents who then come and complain to me...and now I'm in hot water for telling the kids that this is a family-friendly place. It's meant to be family-friendly...so I just ask that we keep it that way.
If people are swearing, I will ask them to stop and if I need to, I'll contact DoW so that they can keep this a clean environment that any family member can enjoy. There are plenty of places online where people can swear all they want (video game forums come to mind), so if people have a burning desire to use more adult language, they can head over to those forums for a while.

I guess the last several posters missed the point that I was NOT advocating swearing online. I filled my post with caveats such as that I supported the rules, which is not swearing. I also indicated that I did not swear online, nor am I advocating that I would like to.
My only point, which was obviously missed, was this was not about the children in my opinion, but about the adults. That is, "family friendly" generally means keeping the adults from freaking out or being offended. But I wasn't saying that the family friendly rules should be disobeyed.
I admit its a useless point to make in this uptight day and age. I thought someone might get it.
