Just purchased and am happy but irritated... Mon, 05 January 2015 16:06
So I am new to the world of table top gaming aside from Risk and Monopoly as a child and teen. I recently (yesterday) purchased a copy of the base game of Memoir 44 and upon opening it was very pleased with the everything on first glance. I loved everything from the plastic box insert to the dice. Like every game I buy (I also own Shadows Over Camelot w/the expansion, Small World w/expansions and Ticket to Ride Europe I absolutely love DOW games) when reading the rules I like to set up a mock game to get a feel for it. When I flipped to the first scenario I found I didn't have enough river tiles and city/village tiles to do that scenario...I counted and recounted all the terrain tiles and found I have the correct amount. I then went to another scenario and read the terrain requirements and found I couldn't play that one either. After flipping through all the scenarios I think I found 2 maybe 3 that I could actually play. I also noticed in one of the scenarios I had enough of the terrain tiles for I didn't have enough Axis hedgehogs for...for a game that is supposed to be so historically accurate I think DOW has missed the mark. I cant imagine a US General giving Axis divisions some hedgehogs to fortify their positions. I honestly didn't look much further into the box or the book as my first instinct was to put everything back how it was and ship it right back for a refund. I feel I have been cheated, shorted and swindled. I have already paid almost $50 for the game and am looking at having to spend another $30-$70 for the terrain and equipment pack (which after reading I dont even think it comes with more hedgehogs...).

It doesn't appear anyone else is frustrated by their purchase of the game so I would like to hear what others have done to remedy this. I would also love to hear from DOW as to why I am so limited in play with the base game.

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

Im sure you'll find many people here who are willing to help you with all your memoir'44 questions.
First, you could check if you have all the correct pieces who should have been included with your game
http://www.daysofwonder.com/uploads/userpages/362174/_1236.p df

If that's the case (nothing is missing), make sure you set up a scenario in the correct order. Begin at the top with the terrain pieces and work your way down. This way you should be able to put down every scenario in the rule book (except Omaha Overlord Cool ) The obstacles (hedgehog, sandbag and wire) can be used be either side so if a scenario has 8 wires, just take 2 of the other color.

Hope this helps, Don't give up on this wonderful game Smile
Have fun!

Glad to help Smile

straight rivers are also the ones with a little curve in the middle (they still go from one end to the other) like the one on the left
This got me confused the first time I played memoir (many, many years ago Rolling Eyes )

On the "Rules and Goodies" page of this website is an inventory of everything in the basic set, which tells what's on both sides of each terrain tile.

The scenarios in the book are all playable with the tools in the box. But you may have to look on the undersides of some of the tiles to find the one that will make it work. They don't all have the same things on their flip sides.

About the obstacles:
The hedgehogs and wire don't actually "belong" to either player; I think it's just for manufacturing reasons that these 3D terrain come in colors. The sandbags may have a tiniest bit of the characteristic in them, but even with the Dig-in card you are allowed to use "enemy" sandbags if you don't have any left (as per FAQ). The minis released after the basegame (all?) are grey so both sides may use them.
BTW, whenever I introduce a new player to m44, I'm sure to point out that there are multiple different looks on buildings and straight rivers. They are oddly confusing.

I think it's an easy (and common) mistake to misinterpret the river tiles in the books' scenario layouts with the ones supplied.

Some of the 'straight' river tiles actually have a bend in them, (see the photograph on an earlier post), but the book only ever shows the dead straight tiles when indicating use of a straight river, when in actual fact the river tiles with the slight bend in the middle are intended.

please note: Along with all the straight river tiles, (including those with a slight bend in them), you should ALSO have four, very distinct river 'bend' tiles, these will actually turn the river 90 degrees.

When i first played, it took me ages to suss out that i DID in fact have ALL the river tiles required to set up the scenarios provided, i just had to get my brain to accept the straight tiles were actually of two varieties lol

The other easy mistake to make, (as has been highlighted above), is that sometimes the tiles you need (particular the town/city tiles) are already on the board, on the flip side of one of the tiles you've already placed ! You often find that many towns/city tiles are actually hiding underneath trees ! if you've come up short of town tiles then its likely that you're using it's tree or hedgerow side on the board already.

Jim

Welcome to this great community! I'm so glad you came here to seek help instead of just packing up the game and sending it back like you were tempted to do. This is a very friendly and helpful community, and I know that I speak for everyone when I say that I hope you'll stick around and keep asking your questions.

DoW is really good about replacing pieces if you find that you are indeed short tiles, but like the others have suggested, I would guess that you have all the tiles you need.

Like Antoi said, you have to get the tiles out in the order they are shown on the side; start at the top and work your way down. I tend to make stacks of the types of tiles I need before even starting the setup. Often you'll need to make a pile of towns or curved rivers because those are the least common...so look through your tiles (checking both sides) and find the needed number of those on top of the list. Once you have the top type of tile, find the next set, and so on until you have all of them.

You might sometimes need to switch out a town hex for a different one because it has a needed image on the back. For example, a curved river on the back of a town might need to be switched out for a forest on the back of a town because the battle calls for more curved rivers and there are lots of forest hexes.

I hope we've all made enough sense to get you on the right track. Be sure to ask if you still have any questions because we all love this game and we know how much fun is in store for you! Take care and good luck!!

Ok I when I got off work I went home and opened the box back up to set up scenarios as suggested. Thank you to everyone for the helpful advice...I will admit I should not have taken the book so literally during set up. As for the hedgehogs and barbed wire...it looks like I will be painting them, I might be a little OCD in that aspect. Thanks again for all the help!

As you can tell by this picture, I've painted mine:

The green sandbags are still green, but the gray ones are now ready for the beach or the desert. I left the gray hedgehogs gray, but painted the green ones.

Ha, believe it or not you truly have. I really appreciate everyone's help and advice! I am a little shocked this thread was still on the first page.

I do have another question. Has anyone else's dice sides started to rub off? I would really like to purchase more in the event I have more people playing in a team style of game but also to replace ones that are rubbing off.

Those look great! I plan on picking up some paint try my hand at adding rust to the hedgehogs and some shadding to add depth to the wire. I have really only gotten a couple plays in as there are only a couple people in my group that would enjoy it and appreciate it. Only after a couple play I really do enjoy this game even though I have lost every time! Dang dice!

My advice about the dice...don't trust in luck.

Sure, sometimes a game can come down to a final die roll, but a lot of new players will dive into attacks hoping to get a perfect roll. Then they get frustrated when the dice don't go their way and their unit is now open to a devastating attack. Instead of diving in, stay in your cover and don't open yourself to dangerous situations.

Have fun. Cool

That was not the problem I am having with the dice....the problem I am having is the symbols are rubbing off of the dice after only three plays.

May I suggest some clear acrylic coating (varnish)?

New dice can be found in the overlord expansion or a second base game.

I do know DoW customer service has been great at replacing missing and broken items. Maybe you can try your luck with them and then apply a varnish to the newly arrived dice?

The dice quality issue has been raised many times before but I'm not sure DoW will supply a new set on their own. This may effect sales of the Overlord expansion and additional base games.

But you never know...

I've varnished two sets after the original base game set faded.

I was curious so I looked over my dice (I have 4 sets that I use). One set is from the first Mem '44 game I purchased and that was back in '04. I still use those dice and played over 300 ftf games. The only set that shows wear is those 10 yrs old dice. The worse of those has only lost only a small amount of the dice symbol (less than 20% of the surface area) and the rest show minor fade and wear. They are all still readily readable.

In you case, is the current wear very minor (perhaps miniscle chipping)?

I am afraid that the way the dice are produced (with the symbol being painted? on the flush surface) there is no way to stop this type of wear other than to spray / paint on some sort of protection coating. DOW could have done that in the first place, but of course that would have added to the cost of the game.

I had actually sent two emails one to bring up the fact they were smearing and the second to essentially scold them for putting out a sub par product and cutting corners on components in their games. I told them I buy DOW games (I own TTR Europe, Small world with 3 expansions, Shadows Over Camelot with the merlin expansion and Memoir 44, all purchased within the last 4 months) for three reasons the actual game itself, the art work and quality of components along with the great box organizers! I felt with Memoir 44 they cut corners with the dice and if it had been a difference in price I would have paid the extra $10 to get dice the quality of Iello's King of New York and King of Tokyo games (those dice are awesome).

So whether it was my rant or just outstanding customer service it doesn't matter I am getting new dice! And I love DOW that much more now!

There was some mention that shifting the production of game components from Germany (where my original dice were produced?) to China (where your dice came from) lead to subpar components being made.

I think great products can be made anywhere as long as a company is so inclined. But of course, at a greater cost.

At any rate, I am glad you got this resolved to your satisfaction.

A quick search and had some of my questions answered about the pieces.

The only "other" one I noticed when trying to set this up with my 9yr old and getting too frustrated to end up playing it was a terrain card. At this point we were too frustrated from flipping over hex pieces, counting pieces, and looking for missing cards that we never did get to play.

The Pegasus Bridge calls for Wood terrain. I don't have that...the closest I have is Forest. I realize what Forests are made out of but when setting up a game for the first time you tend to take things literally.

I own TTR (USA) and we love the game so I bought M44 for my sons Adoption Day and I must admit we weren't happy about the confusion.

Sorry to hear about this "bad experience".

A bit of advice about setting up a scenario.

Each scenario comes with a list of terrain tiles. Follow that list in the order it is given (top to bottom). The names of the tiles aren't always important, you can select them on image only.

First take the number of tiles of the first position and put them on a pile. Then do the same for the second position and the third and so on... do not place them on the board yet, first select all of them in different piles.

Tip #1 : take a look at all the terrain types you need. If there is a type you don't need for the scenario you would like to set up, first take the tiles with this type on their backsides.

If need be, you might need to switch tiles of the same type with different backsides in case you find insufficient backside tiles but if you follow the order (top - bottom) it is much more easy to find all of them.

Tip #2 : there are 2 types of straight rivers ! Both go from one side of the tile to the opposite side of the tile but one is dead straight and the other is slightly bent. The rulebook and the scenarios only show the dead straight ones so this might be confusing.

If you have selected all the tiles you need you can start putting them on the board. Experience has learned me that it is easiest to start with big landmarks like rivers (or roads or railroads (expansions)) and to fill in the gaps afterwards (towns, woods, hills, ...).

Give it a second chance, it is a very nice and fun game though it can be a bit frustrating when the dice won't go your way... But hey, if you can't stand the luck of the dice, go play chess.

Woods is forest and forest is woods. I think you got hung up on the terminology a bit too much. There is indeed a terrain card which covers that and the picture on that does match that terrain type on the scenario setups.

The only complaint I usually see involves the two differently depicted straight rivers. Some players see the straight as an arrow river terrain tiles and the straight river tiles with slight bends and assume that the latter are curved river tiles. This leads some to believe they do not have enough straight river tiles to setup some of the scenarios when in fact they do.

I would encourage you to try this again, it is a great game system and deserves another go.

This site has an FAQ which you can download and is a marvelous resource.

Also posting here with questions is a great way to go as many players can help you out and actively encourage others to play this game.

Good luck with any future efforts and if you carry on you will be well rewarded.
