Player buying guide Wed, 14 January 2015 01:01
Hi all.

I have been thinking about buying Memoir 44 for quite some time. But I am a bit concerned about the number of expansions or the availability of the expansions.

Can anyone tell me what other sets I would need other than the base game for games in France 44 onwards. I am not so much interested in the Eastern front yet and have no interest in the Africa campaign but would like to play the large scale D Day campaigns etc.

Having looked at what is available I am a little confused about what additional expansions I need as some list other sets and some say boards but no scenarios, some refer to Battle Maps which I have been unable to find.

Thanks

Hi, and welcome to the community.

The first thing you should know is that there are over 350 official Memoir scenarios (including over 200 from the Western front) -- and over 3,500 user-contributed scenarios (many of which are excellent).

In other words, while there are at least a dozen expansions (and yes, a few of them are out of print), there are hundreds of battles that you can play without buying anything beyond the basic box.

Expansions to consider:

1. Terrain Pack. Gives you terrain tiles to do a wider variety of scenarios.

2. Equipment Pack has figures for a wide variety of units. Most of these units already existed, as badges or figures with one or another of the expansions -- but you may find it easier than buying Tigers in the Snow (Tiger tanks), Disaster at Dieppe (halftracks & jeeps), Air Pack or a Campaign Book or D-Day Landings (landing craft), Winter Wars (tank destroyers), etc.

Those two expansions will set you up for the vast majority of Western Front standard-size scenarios.

3. If you're interested in multi-player (or bigger scenarios that you can just play one-on one with someone), the Overlord expansion is fun. You'd want a second base game for that, too.

4. Campaign Books 1 and 2 have some additional scenarios. They're not necessities, but if you have a steady opponent, there are special rules to play several battles as a series. CB1 is only available as a digital download now.

5. If you reach a point where you want more advanced scenarios, Winter Wars is an excellent addition that introduces a variety of new rules. You'd probably want a Winter/Desert board with that, if you haven't already bought it by then, so you're not using the white terrain hexes on a green board. And at that point, you might consider the Breakthrough pack, which is double-depth boards. (Winter Wars includes a special Breakthrough deck, though you can play Breakthrough scenarios without it.)

6. D-Day Landings also has more advanced scenarios and new rules, though the enclosed punch cards allow you to play any single map with just one basic set, if necessary. (There are a couple of units that you wouldn't have badges for, but that's not the end of the world.) This expansion calls for the special Breakthrough deck, but you don't actually need it.

May I recommend my guide on Memoir expansions, available here:

It gives a detailed description of what each expansion adds to the game.
