Question about expansions Tue, 17 February 2015 03:38
First time posting. Have been playing the base game with my 9-year old son for the last 2 months. We're looking to expand beyond the base game and were thinking of adding the following:

Mediterranean expansion (I'm English and like the North Africa campaign)
Winter/desert board (to optimize the above)
Winter wars expansion (I've read good things about this one)
Equipment pack (I'm drawn to the special pieces)

Will those work together, or do I need to add anything, eg the Terrain Pack. Anything else I should consider? We're not ready for Breakthrough yet since we like the length of the base game.

Thanks for your thoughts.

First, welcome to the community!

Mediterranean, Eastern, and Winter Wars are all self-contained (except for the optional Winter/Desert Board, which you would buy separately).

In general, Eastern and Pacific tend to be the two most popular expansions to start with.

A few of the Mediterranean scenarios have a tendency to become slugfests with little terrain on the board, and tend to favor one side over the other. However, since you're playing with a 9-year-old, that may not be such a bad thing. Very Happy

Winter Wars is great, but it introduces several significant new rules. You may want to get accustomed to Eastern before you go to Winter Wars.

If your budget is limited, you don't need Equipment Pack to play the scenarios that come with those expansions -- though it is cool to have them.

This is probably the most commonly asked question on these boards, and the answers are always interesting.

My advice is always to pick a theater that your son (and you, if possible) find interesting. If there's a book or movie on WW2 that really captures his imagination, get the stuff you need to play it out.

I remember at age 9 or so I was obsessed with a book about the battle of Iwo Jima - it had some great photos and I checked it out over and over again. I found it again, decades later, in a used book store and picked it up. Got a surprise when I looked at the author's name: Bob Leckie. He was one of the autobiographies used to make HBO's The Pacific.

Anyway, the point is - I'd have loved to have played Iwo Jima after reading about it so many times! Smile

Enjoy the game with your boy!

I think your best purchases at this point would be:

Mediterranean Front
Eastern Front
Winter/Desert board
Terrain Pack

After that I would focus on Campaign Books

I wouldn't recommend Winter Wars or Equipment Pack until you have purchased the above expansions.

The equipment pack is for the Memoir obsessed and is not necessary (though of course I own it), but should be purchased after the campaign books. Also, note the caveat about requirements for this expansion on the DOW Store site:

Quote:

Not a Complete Game. At least one copy of the Memoir '44 base game and many of its expansions are required to enjoy most of the included scenarios, with the Terrain Pack and Winter/Desert board strongly recommended.

The Winter Wars expansion, while fun, should be purchased after you own Eastern Front and Breakthrough. Note also the requirements from the DOW site:

Quote:

A copy of the Eastern Front and Breakthrough Kit are also required to play all included Breakthrough scenarios.

I have written a document on what rules and terrain each expansion brings to the game. It is available here:
