Why would my overall rating be lower than _all_ of my specific ratings? Thu, 04 May 2017 21:58
Just discovered the "My Score and Rank" information here at daysofwonder.com, very interesting. What I'm curious about is the fact that my overall ranking (point total) is lower than any of my point totals for particular maps or variants of Ticket To Ride.

My "Ticket To Ride (Overall ranking)" score right now is 1,454 points. (Which puts me in 1,033rd place -- woohoo! Time to knuckle down and go for a spot in that top thousand...)

If I switch it to "Ticket To Ride (2 players)" it says I have 1,543 points. In "Ticket To Ride (multiplayers)", 1,636 points. For "Ticket To Ride (USA)", 1,485 points. And so forth.

For each of the subcategories in which I am an "established" player (have played 20 or more ranked games), the website says I have a higher point total than my overall point total of 1,454.

I'd have guessed that the overall point score was some sort of average of all subset point scores. (That's why I started looking at it, wanted to clarify which maps I was winning on and which ones were dragging down my overall score.)

But apparently that's not how the overall online-play score works. Can anyone shed some light on that calculation?

Thanks in advance!

Much depends on who you are playing at the time. That includes on what they are ranked on whatever map you are playing.

Example: If you play a USA 2 player, with a person who is 1459 overall, 1620 US, and 1260 2 player (because they get all their points from multi), and your ranks are 1454 overall, 1543 US, and 1483 in 2 player; basically each game is compared. Each game uses the calculation which is listed in another thread. (But basically movement is centered around 8 points possible movement for 2 player)

So for this sample, suppose you win:
overall 1459 v. 1454 (Since even match, 8 points on the line, you as winner go up 4, loser goes down 4) So now it is 1455 v. 1458

US 1620 v. 1543 (you as winner go up 6, and loser goes down 6, since you beat the favored player.) So now it is 1614 v. 1549

2 player 1260 v. 1483 (you as winner go up 1, and they go down 1, because they were not expected to win and you were favored by more than 200, you gain very little.) So now it is 1259 v. 1484

As you can see, this makes for a variance factor that quickly gets varied at the different levels.
(and if you play someone with less than 100 games played, the variance is even greater, due to some factor in the formula.)

This basically tells you why 1600+ overall levels don't like to play with people lower than 100 points below their score. When one loses, it hits a lot harder, and not much gained in the win.
It takes 7-8 wins against a person 200 points below you to offset 1 loss to that person. and if one plays 10 games against a person, even 1200- players will probably win 2 of 10 against 1600+ player.

And that is just the 2 player example. With multi, all the numbers get put into the formula, and if you play and 1600 level player finishes last, they really drop. Thus wider variations in gains.
