How are the scores on the destination tickets determined? Are they determined by fewest number of trains needed to complete them?

Yes, that's what I've read. For example: TTR USA: NY to Seattle = 22 points. It was corrected in TTR 1910: NY to Seattle = 20 points. There were also some other revisions between the publications. The USA 10th Anniversary Edition came pre-corrected.

Thank you for that information, I will keep my eyes out for changes in future releases then. I found that the Los Angeles to Chicago ticket is 16 points in both Ticket to Ride and the 1910 expansion, but the shortest route is actually 15 trains. Also, in the 1910 expansion Las Vegas to Miami is 21 points, but the shortest route takes 20 trains.

Los Angeles to Chicago:
Los Angeles to Phoenix - 3 trains
Phoenix to Santa Fe - 3 trains
Santa Fe to Oklahoma City - 3 trains
Oklahoma City to Kansas City - 2 trains
Kansas City to Saint Louis - 2 trains
Saint Louis to Chicago - 2 trains

Las Vegas to Miami:
Las Vegas to Salt Lake City - 3 trains
Salt Lake City to Denver - 3 trains
Denver to Kansas City - 4 trains
Kansas City to Saint Louis - 2 trains
Saint Louis to Nashville - 2 trains
Nashville to Atlanta - 1 train
Atlanta to Miami - 5 trains
